Oh, that crazy Anton

"People talk about Eric Clapton. What has he ever done except throw his baby off a fuckin' ledge and write a song about it?"

- Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman Anton Newcombe in the new "Entertainment Weekly"
completely true statement
I didn't realize it was murder.
Sweet, great publicity for the DC show. Though, i guess i have to be sure everything goes well, don't want Anton not to be happy.
that is a repulsive thing to say.

i don't know who this anton character is, but the odds of him being fit to breathe in the same room as clapton are low.

if this anton character was any good as a musician, he wouldn't need to generate publicity by saying outrageous things. any no talent fuck can make outrageous statements.

Many a blues guitarist would argue with that.

well anton needs a fact checker… but it's does seem to be the song which defines Eric Clapton's career and also Babyface's for that matter for many people. he let it become another monkey on his back.

re: Change the world.

Clapton sang this as a duet with R&B singer Babyface. He played on Clapton's album Pilgrim in 1998.
This was originally recorded by Wynonna Judd earlier in 1996.
This was featured in the John Travolta movie Phenomenon.
Clapton and Babyface performed this at the Grammys in 1997.
This was written by the songwriting team of Tommy Sims, Gordon Kennedy and Wayne Kirkpatrick.

isnt he referring to Tears from Heaven, or is that the same song

well, my statement was an agreement with hyperbole. i know eric is a talented player, and i like cream, but his solo stuff is pretty uninteresting unless he's playing someone else's songs. except tears in heaven, which is mostly interesting because he threw his kid off a balacony (exagerating again)
ooh there is another song by that name… don't know then without some research

yeah, i thought it was tears in heaven too.
that reminds me…

*adds Dig! to netflix queue*
It's just an outrageous statement, and from what I know about BJM, it's par for the course. They're out there. They beat each other up. They have violent outbursts. They are verbally abusive. Etc. etc. etc. It is a pretty awful thing to say, and yet because of its shock value I laughed. That doesn't make me agree with him or even condone it. But I can appreciate a rock musician trying to cause a stir. Sometimes when people don't know how to do it through their music, they do it in other ways, which is never as effective or interesting or relevant.
pollard and bebe are correct

maybe it's because i find the "change the world" so bland, annoying and over played, basically a coldplay song. and yet it's stuck in my head at the moment….
in a very colorful way anton is just stating that clapton did serious damage to his legacy with one song…
Say what you will about Anton, but he is an incredible musician, anybody that takes the time to listen should know that.As for his statement,it is par for the course. He has a habit of making controversial statements. It just so happens his end up in print. There is usually a bit of truth to what he says,no matter how callous it may seem.It 's just Antons view, nothing more, nothing less.I for one find his work to be as good or better than most things I hear today. As for what he says, that's his perogative.Take his statements with as many grains of salt as you see fit.
how is there "a bit of truth" in that horrible statement? If this is an average thing for him to say, that doesn't make it any better… just the opposite.

I don't like "change the world," either, but EC has a lengthy list of mind-blowing recordings, Cream, Derek & the Dominos, solo, and various other contributions. These cannot be "undone" by any number of bad songs. He is a world class musician and songwriter, an absolute legend for the ages. Clapton is still God. His legacy is beyond dispute.

This other guy is just some asshole.
noone has asked why entertainment weekly gives a shit about anton or BJM?

um, why? do even 5% of their readers know who he is?

Clapton was neglecting his child. The child went out the window and died.Had Clapton not been Clapton he would have probably been prosecuted.

Yeah but 5% of readers of that rag probably do not know who the vice president is.

Who gives a shit about any music? It's just product, right?
