Breakout Band(s) of 2006?

Anyone want to make a prediction of what band will break out this year as the indie darling? Let's see, Arcade Fire really wins the latter half of 2004 and all of 2005, with Clap Your Hands running second. Or did I miss someone?

My guess, and a release I'm really looking forward to: birdmonster. Yea, sucky name.

I can't stop listening to All The Holes in the Walls.

I suppose Artic Monkeys is already on the verge of being the new band of the year. Anyone else got any guesses?
I thought Sufjan Stevens was THE breakout indie artist of 2005. Or does the album have to be a first effort for the artist to be "breakout"?
Well, we might be splitting hairs; he was the critical darling, for sure. I was mroe referring to a band where their name will become "known" for the first time. First, or maybe second release type of thing.

i think breakout can just mean, becoming wildly successful all of a sudden.

doesnt have to be thier first album.

lets just hope 2006 isnt the Arctic Monkeys or soemthing like that…
i suspect the AMs will be this years "breakout" artist given the amount of money they reportedly got from Epic records… mucho promo money will make them this years Strokes, shame the Jam didn't get that kind of care and handling in the US once upon a time.
I suspect by the time the Arctic Monkeys make their third record, all of their fickle fans will have become bored with them, forcing them to take on a completely new sound.
I'll go with We Are Scientists.
Is it me or do the Arctic Monkeys sound like a second rate copy of the libertines?
Ding ding ding.

Wait, I thought Bloc Party or The Killers were 2005. Wah-wah.
Anyhow, yeah, We Are Scientists is a decent call.
I'll toss in The Talk. :)

Agreed. It's too bad their show coming up isn't in D.C., they put on a good show last year at Black Cat and opening for Hot Hot Heat. But there's no way I'm trekking to Sonar on a school night.
I'll go with Hard-Fi
um…SIMON DAWES!!

If not in '06, it'll happen in '07. One of these days the whole world will catch on.

See, this is something interesting. I don't know if their fans are fickle or not. I know that they are another in a long line of British "buzz" bands, but people who have seen them live (people I respect) say they have the goods.

Also, there's something to the "cool" issue when fans discover a band on their own. Not via the press. Or a radio station. Or even a blog. But through word of mouth only. Same thing as what I call the "Phish Phactor". I'm convinced that half those Phish Phans just loved that their band didn't get airplay, didn't sell a gazillion records, and that they "discovered" the band without subscribing to anything mainstream (especially before the Internet was a factor). The "underground" factor played a part.

Artic Monkeys now has a lot of press, but they really didn't before their first single landed at #1 in the U.K.
I'm going with Love Is All. I cannot stop listening to that song on myspace.
I say there will be a european indie "breakthrough" for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, since they are going to release their record in three weeks..
I have to agree with the We Are Scientists votes. They seem to be picking up steam. And they are pretty damn funny and likable. You can find their Letterman appearance here. I'm still not completely won over by the songs, but I think seeing them live might do the trick.
