Mid-May shows

After hearing about their Black Cat gig, I'll try and make it out to this as well.

You guys should check out The Standard, really cool band.
When/where are they playing?
Wasn't the Standard the first band for the Hives/Mooney Suzuki gig 2 summers ago @ the Black Cat?

Crazy, crazy show.

Uninspired. Trite. Overdone. Bleh.

Saw them at Iota and was super-underwhelmed. Canned sounding. Overplaying British stereotypes. "We're the fu*king Thrills."

nicely put - I can't understand the fuss over these guys

It's the end of their tour and Sitek's homecoming gig, so it should be a good one…if they play half as well as they did at the black cat, it'll be worth it.

the details:
the show is in a private duplex in Baltimore owned by a couple of good looking indie types that moonlight in a band called the Hush.
more info on their site
doors at 8, and there are a bunch of bands so my best guess is TVOTR at about midnight.
i'll shed a little more light on this show, as it should be a damn good one.

the supreme imperial is run by george france and his soon-to-be wife (this show is a going-away celebration for their honeymoon or something). france was the drummer in the convocation of, and an awesome one at that. these two are also in the hush, who are the obvious de facto house band for the supreme imperial. also in the hush is tonie joy, the legendary post-punk singer/guitarist who has formed and fronted many a fantastic band in baltimore, including moss icon, the universal order of armageddon, the great unraveling, and the convocation of.

there are three other opening bands, apparently: birdland, apollo heights, and the six parts seven. birdland is a duo of katrina ford and sean antanaitis, formerly the singer and guitarist of love life, who were one of the best birthday party-influenced bands of the last decade. i saw birdland open for tv on the radio and firewater in december and they were great. i know nothing of apollo heights, and i think that the six parts seven are a band on suicide squeeze records (764-hero, red stars theory, hella, etc).

anyway, this should be a fun night with lots of solid, diverse music, and i will most likely be there.
just to complete the info -

Apollo Heights is the new project of the Chavis brothers who formed the Chapel Hill soul/shoegaze band the Veldt. Don't know what the new stuff sounds like, but it's probably good.

The 6 Parts 7 are indeed on suicide squeeze records, and play instrumental music… like Explosions in the Sky with an americana fetish. I like their sound quite a bit.

Don't know Birdland from experience, but I hear good things about them.

Crazy, crazy show.
that was pretty crazy…I don't remember if the Standard opened, but then again, I don't remember that night particularly clearly, period.
we are total nerds, hahaha.

the veldt were good and very unique, so apollo heights should be interesting.

i am never steered wrong with suicide squeeze, and explosions in the sky-like instrumentals with a dash of americana sounds real cool to me. kind of like scenic perhaps? or rex? (remember them?)

walkie, you wil like birdland if you like the birthday party, love life, the get hustle, shannon wright, etc.

yeah, i'll be going to this for sure now.

I'm hoping to be at TV on the Radio show in Baltimore. Depends on what time I get off of work and if I feel up to the drive.

I'll also be at Ani DiFranco tomorrow, Q and Not U on Friday, and 50 Foot Wave on Sunday. I'm considering Mission of Burma on Saturday, but I'm not that familiar with their stuff. With all the other concerts this week, I think I'll probably pass on them.

Crazy, crazy show.
Nope. That was The Pattern.
It is worth mentioning that 50 Ft. Wave are playing an in-store at Revolution Records this sunday, from 4-5. Not sure why this is so unpublicized, but it should make many of you happy. Makes you wonder how you can run a record store if you don't know that much about music. Just a thought.
Awesome – thanks for the info redsock…
I don't see any mid-May shows that I want to see.

Next show of interest is May 27. BR549 in Richmond.

Wait, i thoguht you were a Bigger Lovers fan? Why aren't you coming to the BY night?
is this some kind of slam on Revolution? How can you make the leap from a not very publicized in-store to them not knowing much about music? FWIW, Revolution was probably the only store in DC to even carry the 50'~ EP

Why not post some info on bigyawn about their various instores?
