Secret Machines

Alright, alright, whatever. I hadn't realized I and most people I know were so out there on the lunatic fringe…we were rebels and we didn't even know it.
Both - considering my age, you flatter me.
Great sets by Helio Sequence and Secret Machines. Iâ??ve been a big fan of both since last yearâ??s Black Cat gig. I left halfway through the Kings of Leon set. Probably the first time I had seen an entire lineup previously and knew for a fact that I would like the openers more than the headliner. KOL arenâ??t bad, but the show had nowhere to go but down after Secret Machines.

Great songwriting and musicianship from Helio Sequence. One of the most dynamic rock drummers Iâ??ve ever seen. He plays the drums like a lead guitarist â?? every stroke matters; heâ??s not just keeping the beat. I could have watched them play another hour, and with three full length albums already, they have the material. Love and Distance was one of my favorite albums of last year. In a three band lineup, the first group can sometimes be a throwaway but Iâ??ll bet the club could come up with a killer all-star show of the best of those openers from any given year. These guys and Nic Armstrong from a few weeks ago would make my short list. Letâ??s do this.

This was my 4th time to see the Secret Machines, and I may have to say that last night was the best theyâ??ve sounded. I like the new material live and I think they are playing it tighter than their last 9:30 gig. My only criticism of Wednesdayâ??s Recher show would have been that they seemed to let the sound get away from them a few times. That may have just been the setup though â?? last night was better. The light effects are also improved. The intensity is still there, but without the piercing white lights pointed directly into the crowd. I agree with the above comment that SM can lose momentum in some of the longer songs, which are already longer than most. Didnâ??t bother me much though. They always start and finish well. Their closer, First Wave Intact, was a beast.

The crowd around me got very annoying near the end of the set. Too much yapping and jostling for KOL position. Not unexpected since I was up close, but Iâ??m always amazed that someone can obliviously chat away while a band is tearing it up on stage like SM were near the end.

I want to say that the Secret Machines arenâ??t radio friendly enough to really have mass appeal, but between iPods, commercials, and TV soundtracks, being radio friendly isnâ??t necessarily required for popularity anymore. If they ever really do blow up, Iâ??ll certainly miss the small club gigs. I think there were about 100 people at the Recher show.
Tom: That was a great review. I also noticed the talking, which was the worst durng "Girl from the North Country" which sadly is missing from their newest CD. Did you notice how great SM's sound-balance was last night? I usually wear ear-plugs, but even during "First Wave" their sound guy kept everything within melodic ranges…which I cannot say was true with KOL. Sorry I missed Helio…but I'm a big Nic Armstrong fan too…so based on your recommendation, I'll check out their cd.
Girl From the North Country is on their latest CD, FYI. It's the EP: 1 new song, 4 (I think) covers, and the Road Leads Where it's Led.
I think everyone at 930 knows who I am, so a photo is unnecessary. There's a history here which is quite funny. You'll find it in past threads.
i've worked at the 9:30 for well over two years and i post here quite frequently, and i have no idea what you look like.

also, it is naive to think that the secret machines have not used drugs before, especially hallucinogens. it is part of rock 'n' roll, whether a band sounds psychedelic or not. i have no reason to believe the secret machines are lying and that interview was mere gossip. and lastly, who cares? why should they care what straight-laced people think of them? if it's part of who they are, then why can't they be honest?

i didn't see this show, but i would have liked to see secret machines and the helio sequence. i'm not a kings of leon fan.

wow, where do i begin … I got the Josh Garza quote from the secret machines website, I'm going to take that as "accurate" … and, yes, I believe that article, it's really just a whole bunch of quotes strung together, not much writing involved … why would the journalist risk his job and misquote the guys?

wha?? where the hell did this come from? i will not have my stoner reputation impugned!!! i've been pretty much all over the map when it comes to drugs, but now i keep it to weed, cigarettes and booze (not really a caffeine person, if you were curious)

how did i insult you here? all i did was say that they took a lot of acid, you freaked out, and i responded by showing you where they've talked about acid, frankly it seems that (like me) they could give a shit who knows about their casual drug use

i've been trying to flatter you for months. I dont see why we cant just go out on a date and get it over with!!!!!
Thanks. I agree the balance was great. I was up close in the potential-ear-bleeding section, but never had a problem at all. Hope you like the Helio album.

I'd suggest that Secret Machines (really careful not to say: Brandon, Benjamin and Josh) should probably either sue the writer or be more careful about their interviews…and since Hoya wasn't the "writer", he's simply repeating unsubstantiated gossip - but that's their A&R guy's problem.
WHAT?? they decided to talk about consciousness and drug use in an "on the record" interview, so they should sue the writer?

I DID A GOOGLE SEARCH AND FOUND A PUBLISHED ARTICLE … this is "repeating unsubstantiated gossip"?? are you insane?

saw them cover that one of the last times i saw them, and wow, they do a great job … turn into a shoegaze band for it, layers of gauzy sound, really cool
Sonick - I'm helping another "groupie" put together a line-up for the Ottobar in the near future…we'll get you on the guest list - if you promise not to bad-mouth the bands or their fans…hahahah. You won't even have to break your boycott. I think Balt. is pulling ahead on the best live-music options…with more venues for mid-sized shows.
Okay, back to the music stuff. I'm confused about the Secret Machines discography. I thought Now Here is Nowhere is their most recent cd; was there ANOTHER EP on sale last night? I know they had an ep at the Black Cat for their first outing here - but I cannot find it in my very messy cd cabinet… so I'm not sure if it's the EP you guys found "Girl from the North Country" on…it's not on "Now here is Nowhere".

so you're just going to forget about defending your insane comments made earlier?
Defend? Is that a legal term? Do I have to use multiple paragraphs? Bite me, Hoya. You're a rude little pric* and I'm not interesting in dueling with you on line any more TODAY….but feel free to keep up your obsessive quest to get in the last word. It's an important part of your legal training.

I gotta say, you seem truly obsessed with his career choices…

Kol? Poseurs. It's not a coincidence that the British press is in love with them. Those tight jeans and ironically gelled-to-look-naturally messy hair styles make them all about the look, which is maybe supposed to distract you from the fact that their music is repetitive. They are sound more and more like a bad version of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers each time I see them.
you know i thought the same thing about KOL seeing them live awhile back. This whole they only listened to 60's and 70's music is baloney, i also heard alot more Tom Petty than anything else from them. and a sort of a follow on to one of Ms. Sushi's comment, i thought it was odd for them to take the time to tune a guitar between songs of thier two song encore. it's rock n' roll who is going to care if your slightly out of tune, kinda killed any momentum they had going too.
Don't start slamming the lawyers now. The board is infested with them and those in training.

Maybe someone should have told Brendan…KOL forgot to invite the Secret Machines.
i'm fairly certain that members of all three bands and their crews were in the backbar after the show at one point or another.

I didn't make the story up; a couple of your staffers told me.
the party was planned and announced before doors to the staph, long before any secret service people showed up. very few members of the staph even knew the twins were in the club. at no point was anyone on staph told that the secret service had "seized" the backbar. i am the one that made the decision to close it off when we did. be pissed at me if you really need to be pissed.

If it was a KOL private party, perhaps you could have put the NO ADMIT sign up earlier in the evening so none of us would have planned to meet up down there later…you also have a website updated daily where it might be considerate to post such notices.
there are various areas of the club that can be open to the public or restricted at just about any time during the night. at most sold out shows, people complain that the vip area is roped off. last night, it was open. most nights the backbar is open, but sometimes we close it. sometimes entire sections of the balcony are restricted. sometimes, we even mark off areas of the floor with tape and keep people out of them. we do not, and will not, post announcements every time we do so. it's just not practical.

I'm sure DC9 appreciated the maneuver, however…
i'm sure they did. we send them business all the time.

Perhaps next time, you can give the headliner the backbar, and us proles the green room…
there is no green room. there are dressing rooms. that's it. no magical land of free flowing booze, sex, and drugs.

Last time KOL played 930, they had to mingle will all us nasty fans in the backbar. They were so put out and snotty, I'm not surprised they asked for privacy…I think they'll get lots of it eventually :D :D :D
i'm fairly certain that the majority of the passes for the aftershow were given out to fans in the crowd, not people on the guest list. i saw a member of their crew handing them out throughout the night. either way, it's up to them. if they want to keep people away, they can choose to. the repurcussions fall on them, and no one else.

Thanks for the settig the record straight.
my pleasure. it's what i'm here for.
