Man, has everyone really crapped out? There is no activity on the board today. You'd think the club went and scheduled Jason Mraz and Liz Phair togather or something and we all stopped caring about music cause it is clearly all about the money. Oh wait, they did and we have. Well, maybe not completely stopped caring.
Seriously folks I need new bands, great albums….recently talked up artists like Postal Service and Longwave now have a home in my cd player cause of you all…wake up for christs sake!
I guess I'll see you all tomorrow at the Blur show, I'll be the guy up front trying to prevent my short GF and her sister from getting squashed by pogoing Damon fans! Oh what fun!

Okay then, I've got questions, not so much advice. What's the word on Super Furry Animals? Their albums are fabulously reviewed, but I'm not sure I fully get what they're about, and I don't know anyone who listens to them.

Other bands I keep hearing about and which get great reviews are Longwave and Cursive. Can anyone fill me in on these with more than "they're great!"?

Dancing at a rock show……. remind me never to do that again. Really if they dont like being bouced into, the front of a sold out 930 show might not be the best place to stand. Instead of asking the pogoers to stop, just accept defeat and move to the back or balcony.

Or stellar idea, why not just pogo right back.

I love the new Adam Green album, but that is probably an aquired taste.

Super Furry Animals,

I didnt like their older albums so much, but I only ever gave them a brief listen. They put on a good live show, although the last 930 show was a bit dissappointing. But Rings around the world was just the sound of last summer to me. It is such a happy upbeat beatlesesque sunny romp that only the braindead (mjnova) wouldnt be charmed by it.

I refuse to be a cursive or longwave fan.

really? I am not that keen. I bet the new grandaddy album is better and I only know two songs off of it.

I mean I think Pernice Brothers are OK, but a little average sounding…. If you try really hard you can get people to believe Teenage fanclub, Grand Prix is the Pernice Brothers first album…….

Markie, I was specifically not bringing up the Tyde, as when I posted the Velvet Lounge date you told me to sssshhhhhhhhhhh…..let's keep the crowds away (though now that I think of it, a Monday show will be a tough sell, though I will definitely be there after fort reno).

By the way, this was written for the LA Weekly by a friend of mine, and I think it's a great profile. The last paragraph, a quote, is my credo as well, except that I listen to music rather than play it!

The Tyde: Forward into the â??80s

Darren Rademaker knows what he likes. Given the choice between good songs or flashy musical trends, the leader of the Tyde will always take the tunes.

â??Itâ??s like, are you a style band or a substance band?â? he muses over a cold bottle of Miller High Life. â??Are you really into music, or do you just want to be famous and have sex with a lot of random girls? Being famous and having sex with a lot of random girls is totally fun, but after youâ??re 29 or 30, are you still gonna care about music?â?

Rademakerâ??s 41st birthday is already receding in the rearview mirror, and he, for one, still cares about music. The audible proof is Twice, the Tydeâ??s new record for Rough Trade America; a veritable feast of crystalline guitars, rollicking keyboards, catchy melodies and wry lyrics, Twice more than fulfills the promise of Once, the L.A. bandâ??s acclaimed 2001 debut.

As with Once, the 11 tracks on Twice â?? Rademaker categorically denies that the next Tyde album will be called Three Times a Lady â?? offer up a tart mixture of human frailty and California sunshine. But this time out the mid-â??60s Dylanisms and â??cosmic countryâ? vibes of the first album have been jettisoned in favor of the ringing pop sounds of such â??80s cult faves as Felt, Galaxie 500 and Television Personalities.

â??I had the idea to go back and explore our indie roots, whatever they were,â? Rademaker explains. â??Kind of like, â??Letâ??s move it out of the â??60s and â??70s and into the early â??80s.â?? But not into the cheesy â??80s that everybodyâ??s into; no punk-funk or electroclash!â?

Though much of Twiceâ??s music is quite chipper, Rademakerâ??s lyrics â?? which he delivers in a plain but pleasing voice somewhere between Lou Reed and Echo and the Bunnymenâ??s Ian McCullough â?? are considerably darker than on the last album. â??A Loner,â? â??Best Intentionsâ? and the KCRW semi-hit â??Blood Brothersâ? all reek of disappointment and abdicated responsibility, while â??Crystal Canyonsâ? and â??Breaking Up the Bandâ? deal with the less-than-glamorous results of sustained drug abuse.

â??I know so many idiots who used to be so brilliant, and then they got involved with crystal meth,â? Rademaker says. â??People that were really good friends of mine that died. Or theyâ??re writing good songs, but theyâ??ll never be able to do anything with them because theyâ??ll never be able to get it together from one thought to the next.â?

Not that Rademakerâ??s own habits are exempt from scrutiny. â??Henry VIIIâ? examines his love-hate relationship with marijuana. â??Yeah, itâ??s a song about trying to quit smoking pot,â? he laughs. â??When I go surfing in Dana Point, I drive down PCH and go, â??Thereâ??s no way Iâ??ll ever be able to afford any of these houses.â?? But maybe if I wasnâ??t such a dope-smoker Iâ??d have become just a regular guy.â?

Regrets? Rademaker has a few. But when your music has earned you raves from your well-respected peers â?? Jason Pierce of Spiritualized and Teenage Fanclubâ??s Norman Blake among them â?? and your band is getting ready to mount a summer tour that will encompass the U.S., the U.K. and much of Europe, life as an irregular guy doesnâ??t seem so bad.

â??My secret is that Iâ??ve never given in to regular society, that â??Why donâ??t you give up that stupid music?â?? thing,â? he says. â??I love doing music, and I donâ??t care if I have to live in a shitty one-bedroom apartment for the rest of my life to do what I want. You have to look around and say, â??Am I happy? Am I listening to some good tunes?â?? You can always get by if you want to.â?

So that Teenage Fanclub album is just average then? I shouldn't invest the $7.98 that Amazon wants for a new copy?

This is actually Joe Pernice's 8th album.

I don't think his voice sounds like any of the three singers in Teenage Fanclub.

The Wrens just might be the best band you've never heard of. Fortunately, after a significant hiatus since 1996's Secaucus, they're back with a new album– one that rivals their best work to date. The Meadowlands is set to drop September 9th via Absolutely Kosher Records, also home to Pinback and The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up. The kink in this story is that AbKosh has had the album available on its website since January in a limited edition format with four bonus tracks– outtakes from various sessions during the 90s. And you can still get it that way, for a time, but when they're gone, you won't have another chance to get ahold of the disc until September, and even then it's just the standard 13-track edition. The Wrens formed back in the late 80s, eventually securing a residency as the house band on a ferry. Weird. Their website claims they were fired for playing a cover of "Debaser" to the old peeps. Now, I'd rather hear The Wrens play "Debaser" than "catch a soap" any day of the week, but then, I'm not 170, and there's no accounting for taste, a lesson we must sadly learn and re-learn every day of the week.

The Wrens lived together for ten years in Secaucus, NJ, and have been making records since 1993 in their basement– from their first single "Low" (1993) to their first album Silver (1994) and the pretty much classic Secaucus (1996). Things got sticky around the time of Secaucus, though, when the once venerable Grass Records dropped like their entire roster to become Wind-Up Records. You know Wind-Up Records. They have Creed.

But, after having endured their share of bad label relationships in the interim, The Wrens have finally signed on with Absolutely Kosher, which can only be a good thing. They've been overlooked for entirely too long. And speaking of overlooking things (especially that tall-ass fucker with the cranial graphics directly in front of you), the band will be playing some East Coast dates in August and September. So if you're hoping to do just that– and live over d'ere– check:

I have listened to Cursive and it just makes me long for the more melodic better produced Sparta.

I dont really know much of longwave they play one song on WOXY, but it didnt do anything for me.

Its Ok I dont know it that well and I have had it years. Lulu noticed the similarity not me.

They have Grand Prix and bandwagonesque at olsons for 7.99 each. Along with a few new releases like Grandaddy at 11.99. I wish I had bought a copy.

Anyone going to the Siren Festival at Coney Island? Will be interesting to see Idlewild… again, though the setting (tens of thousands of festival goers who may not necessarily be there to see them) is a little more familiar to them. Wasn't all that interested, but the weather forecast is for sunny day so figured what the hell. Leaving at 8:00 tonight, hoping to get to Soho before 1:00. See yas
