Norah is pretty cool. Saw her once at the 9:30, good show. Now I am thinking of her CD for my mom…
Norah Jones
eeeeechhh [insert convincing gagging noise here] norah jones is a little too whiny and bluesy for my tastes… plus, any time i turn on the radio that stupid song song is playing. it's so overplayed… oh i am sick of it

Gillian Welch is opening…should be a nice double bill…
I dunno how I feel about her. She doesn't really seem like she feels her lyrics. I don't enjoy music where artists don't give their whole heart into their singing. I just read that her core audience is mainly people pushin 50. The Grammy's sucked this year, mainly because their music was horrible except for a few acts, and partly because it was pretty much Norah walking up and accepting her awards.

The article you are referring to was David Segal's usual crap in the Post.
I saw Norah for free at the Kennedy Center a month before her big record came out, and later at the 9:30 when it was starting to take off. Age-wise, both audiences were a refreshing mix on 20, 30, 40, and gasp, 50somethings. A good mix of races, and couples of varying sexual orientations. Granted, someone in my party (not me) complained that the audience was full of yuppies, but hey this is DC.
I also disagreed with the aforementioned article in that it was claiming that Bruce Springsteen's core audience was younger than Norah Jones. Give me a break! Are there really that many people under the age of 30 who listen to Bruce Springsteen?

quote:
Originally posted by BOOMERANG1313:
I dunno how I feel about her. My biggest beef with norah jones' beautiful album is that some of the material is a bit tame. but it is a beautiful album, and her talent is stunning. personally i'm happy to see the grammys go to someone talented instead of the usual boring springsteen stuff, but the awards are really unimportant.
I'll agree that it is tame in places… aknowledging that there is a difference between tame and subtle. The album was actually re-recorded with a different producer. I wonder if he smoothed the edges out too much in places. After all, this is the same guy who produced Phil Collins' wonderful "Against All Odds".
I'd like to see her take a shot at country. She is a big Willie Nelson fan. One fears that the next album may end up just trying to be a carbon copy of this one.
Alicia Keys
Jody Watley
Marc Cohn
Ric Astley
Shelby Lynne
This is the fate that awaits Norah Jones. Her second album will sell well on the coattails of the first, but in ten years, the only place you'll find her is an a "Best of the 'Oughts" compilation.

Cause i love her, but where the hell is she??
gone i suppose
Shelby Lynne's album that won her best new artist was actually her sixth album. Unfortunately, she tried to go in a more rock oriented approach on her follow up, and it blew. I still think she'll makae strong comeback.
As for the other artist on the list, they simply lacked talent. I think Norah has more talent than them, and will be on the cusp in the resurgance of roots music for several albums to come.
http://www.rockonthenet.com/grammy/newartist.htm
its a list of the best new artists….
If you were not picked between the mid60's and mid 70's it appears to be a kiss of death.
Sheryl Crow and Sade are the only people who stand out to me at least as exceptions.
Mariah and Christina still appear to be going strong…
Plus, what if Norah's next album only sells a quarter of what this one does. Does that make her a failure? I don't think the album was intended to be a major selling album anyway. Released on the Blue Note jazz label, I think the intention was to find a small, comfortable niche market.
[This message has been edited by Rhett Miller (edited 02-26-2003).]

Mariah is dead and gone, getting dropped by EMI sealed her fate.
Norah Jones sold 5 million albums in the US. If the next sells 1.25 million I doubt she will be heading back to a trailer park.

i'm a bit late into this discussion… and i'm too lazy to read every post, but did anyone recall when Lauryn Hill was this huge deal and she won about 852 grammys for that one album, and then she just kind of dropped off the face of the earth? will that happen with nora jones?
Lauryn Hill was pretty "successful" with the Fugees before her solo project.
Like Jones, just because she "drops off the face of the earth" doesn't mean the work that was recognized was no good.
I think Lauryn Hill's Miseducation and Jone's record are both very solid!
Are you sure? I thought her Unplugged album from last year was well received…but I don't know enough about her to say for certain.

quote:
Originally posted by paige:
i'm a bit late into this discussion… and i'm too lazy to read every post, but did anyone recall when Lauryn Hill was this huge deal and she won about 852 grammys for that one album, and then she just kind of dropped off the face of the earth? will that happen with nora jones?
