i just went through iTunes and picked out my favorites from '97 … the ratings were just a rough approximation of how i'd rank them all … forgot about the teenage fanclub, good call … but i willfully left off the elliott smith =)
how the hell can y'all remember what was released when? shit, I can barely remember what was released in 05, let alone 1997

I've had an excel spreadsheet of all the records I own for some time. I sorted by year.

BTW if you're looking for a talented Elliot Smith protegee, check out Andrew Morgan. "Misadventures in Radiology" is an awesome disc. Legend has it that he recorded most of it while crashing on Elliot's couch, so the connection is there. Hoping he hits DC at some point soon.
I think I heard about him on MySpace…

iTunes … i could also quickly find my favorite singer/songwriter tracks from 1995, or my favorite dream pop songs from 1991 =)

I try and remember some of the shows I attended and mixes I made; then look up from there. While a couple on my list are not the absolute "best of the best" they are per the time and bear mentioning.
Yeah color me stupid for forgetting Portishead and Homogenic.

Also Takako Minekawa - Roomic Cube

I was pretty disillusioned with rock that year.
Or you can get itunes to display the year a record was released and then sort by year.

Dandy Warhols: Come Down

Brian Jonestown Massacre: Thank god for mental illness.
can't believe i forgot either/or
at least it wasn't xo
gotcha - although not all my itunes music at work has a year tag

FIELD DAY 2004….I can't remember if Elliot played during Blur's set (which along with Underworld and Radiohead's sets were the only bright spots in an otherwise awful day) or during the worst Beastie Boys performance in history. The B-Boys only added insult to injury after coming on early to offset Beck's cancellation after he got wasted, tripped, fell, and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. It's a good thing that Radiohead was so awesome, otherwise, the crowd might have started burning Giants Stadium Woodstock '99-style.

Although, I didn't listen then, I saw this album frequently. Good call.
I didn't listen to Grandaddy or Dropkick Murphys but I believe they had albums out then too.(?)
I think this is their most overlooked album, perhaps because it has a different theme then the others. I wished they had done some of the songs of this when they played DC9, I would have loved to hear their cover of Those Memories.

My thought as well. Though I remember 1997 was the year that I moved to DC, so I can match a few musical things with personal events.

How long has the forum been around? I remember a discussion somewhere about how this cd was highly overrated for its price.

Also I prefer '97 to '05 music thus far. ;)
what a great year for music…. a lot of memories in there.
Brian Jonestown Massacre-Give it Back
The Beta Band's The Three E.P.'s deserves a mention.
Oasis – Be Here Now

Oh wait, I was fucked up on coke when I listened to that. Oh wait, that was the band. What a shite record.
