I don't remember Daft Punk being that year, but I definitely overlooked Portishead's disk.

Sleater-Kinney and Foo Fighters. Shit, didn't realize "The Colour and The Shape" was 1997…I didn't get it until '99. Then, I got it!

Hmm… OK. I went with the year on the back of the CD, and it said 1996, which is probably when it was recorded, copyrighted, etc, etc.
Daft Punk is definitely in my top 10.

Ditto.
An old Rolling Stone issue had Grohl and others pick favorites for this year. Bjork topped all lists.
Hoya are those your personal faves or are you in journalistic mode? ;) (Never can figure out if these lists are to be personal or rated picks)
Anyhow, I go the personal route. Otherwise, I'd go on for hours. Some of mine have been mentioned: Verve, Portishead, Foo, Whiskeytown, Radiohead, Pavement, Sundays…
(Not best, but I listened for a few weeks: Blink, BFF)
Toad The Wet Sprocket - Coil
Elliot Smith - Either/Or
Teenage Fanclub - Songs From Northern Britain
Echo & the Bunnymen - Evergreen
The Devlins - Waiting
Offspring - Ixnay on the Hombre
INXS - Elegantly Wasted
Silverchair - Freak Show

Great call on Elliot and Teenage Fanclub. One of the greatest regrets of my concert going life was not going to see Elliot perform at Field Day in 2004. Then he decided to end it. What a waste.
BTW if you're looking for a talented Elliot Smith protegee, check out Andrew Morgan. "Misadventures in Radiology" is an awesome disc. Legend has it that he recorded most of it while crashing on Elliot's couch, so the connection is there. Hoping he hits DC at some point soon.

Ditto. He turned up headlining the second stage during Blur, right?
