Black Cat Shows

psssh i WISH i were friends with them.
Unless The Ruins were from the late 70's, they are nowhere near being the originators of no-wave. You can check out a compilation called "No New York" with bands such as Teenage Jesus and The Jerks, Mars, DNA, James Chance and the Contortions, etc. As much as I'm glad that this music is making a comeback, it isn't all that original.

I once helped Hugh build a mobile styrofoam chicken. Does that count?

To be fair, The Ruins have been around for almost 20 years…although seeing as Arto Lindsay just turned 50, they're still a bunch of kids in comparison.

Oh yeah, and that compilation is really good.

of course it does, walkie. i talked to some of the guys at black cat… guess that doesn't count though. i mean, styrofoam chicken vs. smoky-room conversation? you win.
I take back what I said then.

speaking of no new wave from nyc… checkout Downtown 81 which is currently showing on Sundance. it's basically Jean-Michel Basquiat wandering around nyc interacting with various scenesters and includes performances by DNA, Tuxedomoon, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, James Black, and The Plastics.

i only caught part of it, but it's interesting little film that was only just finished in 2000. Hence the website.

I've never been to the Black Cat before but was thinking about heading there this Thursday for the Fall show.

I was wondering what time their shows usually end on weekdays, plus if they've got a parking lot nearby (like the 9:30's).

Thankssssssss
No parking as in a parking lot, and their shows tend to run later than the 9:30s. They don't seem to care if you make the metro or not (though is that still an issue with the expanded hours?).

Typically, if there's one opening band, they'll go on around 9, with the headliner at 10. But if there are two openers, the headliner can go on as late as 10:30, 11:00.
The problem with taking the Metro is that it doesn't really run that late and I've heard horror stories of (suburbanite) friendlies getting stuck in Generic Bad Neighborhood in NW and being scared out of their minds.

Is it generally that hard finding parking around the place?
Oh wait. Extended hours? Metro?
its normally really easy to park around the blackcat. If you are more than a block and a half away you will be unlucky. And it is fine now around that area.

I highly recommend the fall show.
my girlfriend and I got robbed leaving black cat about a month or so ago. yep.

Yeah, I have a super secret place where I always park before black cat shows, but suffice to say, just go around the neighborhood behind the club and you will find a spot.
their is a big parking lot at the main street you turn off to get to the black cat, dont know how much or if you can park there, ring the black cat they can tell yer.
sure…my g/f and I were leaving her sisters show at around 11pm on a friday. i was parked about 2 streets behind the black cat. 3 dudes walk past us, one dude grabs my g/f, 2 guys grab me from behind. they stole her purse and my wallet and then ran off….didnt really rough us up. cops came, took my story..and thats the last ive heard about it. shit sucked.

That sucks man, I'm sorry to hear that. DC is a big city and it happens all over. Smackette and I were recently robbed at gun point in Cleveland Park of all places, so it can happen anywhere.

But don't let that ruin your fun. I find these to be isolated incidents and sometimes just bad luck. I go to both the Black Cat and the 9:30 often, and have never been bothered. Instead, just walking home from the local watering hole in my neighborhood I got robbed, so pay attention to your surroundings and be alert, and if accosted, give them the cash - it's not worth bodily harm.
shit smackie, you didnt tell us you got robbed….

Sorry to hear about both your incidents.

I suggest we move to the 'burbs asap.

Cheers. Thankfully, No one was hurt, so you just move on. It's just a little disturbing to the psyche, that's all.

As for moving - I chose San Francisco instead - just avoid the Tenderloin I'm told.
