the show last night was amazing! i was right up front behind these two great girls. i'm the one who asked gary, the drummer, if it would be alright to rush the stage. so that is my fault, i hope the 930 staff does not hate me forever for that but it was such a great way to end the evening. also, carl performed "france" in the middle of the set for me cos i'd been requesting it all three shows, so i was absolutely thrilled about that. the aftershow was nothing too exciting, we chatted with radio 4 a bit cos they overheard our conversation about nightmare before christmas, gary gave me a friendly shove, i thanked carl for playing "france" and apologized for the stage rush which was said was "lovely" and i saw anthony as we were leaving. they were all heading upstairs to dance.

so in summary… GREAT SHOW!
All thanks be to the mighty Google.

is that directed at me? no (although you probably don't believe that), i'm just telling what happened.
Straight men dancing…willingly. That is completely mind-boggling.
What a great show - had a blast. We were on the right side of the stage enjoying the space (no reason to spill the $5, 6 ounce beers). Gary was signing tickets and taking pictures before the show. Wish I could see them again soon.

Fun night. Last time I saw Markie he was being escorted off the stage.
poorlulu! next thing he'll be trying to form a band…
No band for me.

I have no musical ability. Getting up on stage is always a bit of an experience though.

I really cannot stand Radio4 either. I have no real reason for it, perhaps its the bongos, perhaps its because they dont have squiffy hair.Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.

I was rather disappointed with the libertines. I still think it was a good show, but compared to the blackcat there was a lot of energy missing. The new songs being a fair bit slower really puts a bit of a dampener on things.
Yeah, I have to say that Radio 4 gets less interesting each time I see them. They can be a fun band the first few times you see them, but then it gets kind of old. Their mix sounded bad last night as well.

I enjoyed The Libertines. I think the Black Cat show was better. But I think that show was better because The Libertines are the sort of band you want to see in an intimate, dark place. The kind of place where you are right up next to the band. There was too much space at the 9:30 Club -if that makes sense. The Libertines like to be with the fans, and they seemed a little uncomfortable on a stage above us all. Musically, they were really tight. The new songs are not as catchy as the fun older tunes but they seem more complex. The nice quiet Carl song was ruined for me by some loud talkers next to me. Grrr. It didn't help that the woman had a shrill voice. When I see the band, I experience a feeling of sadness for Carl. It must be hard to sing a song when you remember writing it with your best friend. I liked the encore best and not just because the boys were shirtless. ;) The stage invasion at the end was fantastic, and Carl seemed delighted. It gave me a little glimpse of what the shows must have been like with him, Pete and the rest of the band playing in the arms of devoted fans. A cool thing.
I canâ??t compare to the Black Cat show, but I really enjoyed the Libertines - their songs have a complexity and depth of sound & melody that evades a lot of the current â??retroâ?? or â??garageâ?? bands, who tend to sound more hollow. However, Iâ??m interested to see that a couple of you mention a bit of a lack of energyâ?¦I experienced that as well, but chalked it up (is it chalk it up or chock it up?) to being about me and not the band. I was near the back, which was cool because the not-quite-sellout crowd left some room for dancing and getting air, but I also had some mind-wandering moments and a bout of yawns mid-show. Not that the Libertines were â??yawn-able,â?? but I wasnâ??t fully swept up. I moved up closer for the encore, into a tighter crowd, and that made a difference.

But some songs just rocked no matter where I stood, mostly older songs. I wish Iâ??d seen the Black Cat show.

And I totally agree â?? with that drummer stripped to the waist and glistening for nearly the whole show, the scrawny front guys made a pretty weak impression. ;)

I caught three Radio 4 songs. They fall into that camp I described a sec ago â?? somehow kind of hollow, and very â??standard.â? I didnâ??t find them awful â?? god knows Iâ??ve heard far worse â?? but they did nothing to grab or inspire me.

Wish I could have hit the after show, but other priorities forbade itâ?¦ I had a great time at the show, though, seeing lots of board and â??real lifeâ?? folks. I was impressed, as this is the first show in ages for which I bought just one lone ticket for myself; I ran in to loads of folks. Yeah! And always fun to see Markie up on stage doing his jumping jig.

By the way, I thought security did a great job with that crowd onstage. No big deal, they took folks off two to three at a time until the stage crowd was gone – it was a great finale and still worked out fine for the band and the club.
I thought the Libertines were great. They got off to a slow start but finished strongly.

I thought Radio 4 were better last night than when they opened for Ted Leo, but that's not saying much.
Loved the show cause I love the band. They did look pretty road-weary though, and I kinda doubt there will be another album anytime soon… especially since Pete Doherty seems to be off doing his own thing now. Still, I'm glad I got to see them twice.

And I have some Interpol MP3s in my old computer that I got either in 1999 or 2000 back when I was living in my old apartment which I believe would potentially make Interpol the older band. Plus, when I found their MP3 on some site, it mentioned that they had already been around and going strong on the local (NYC) level for a couple years.
Now I will play the rold of Bags

The Libertines

The British music press loves nothing more than to hype the next great British rock-and-roll hope. A couple of years ago, that honor went to the Libertines, a garagey, jaggedly romantic London group that the New Musical Express touted as Britain's best new band. Having its debut album, "Up the Bracket," produced by legendary Clash guitarist Mick Jones may have had something to do with the buzz.

Since then, though, the Libertines have starred in a rock-and-roll soap opera. Drug-addled guitarist and singer Pete Doherty missed shows, went in and out of rehab and was arrested for burgling band mate Carl Barat's apartment. Now that must have made for some awkward band meetings. The group hasn't disowned Doherty altogether, but he has proven too unreliable to take out on the road.

And so it was a Doherty-less Libertines who played for a little over an hour to an enthusiastic crowd Tuesday at the 9:30 club. Barat handled lead vocals and was backed by new guitarist Anthony Rossomando, bassist John Hassall and drummer Gary Powell.

A huge banner behind the stage depicted four riot police officers holding shields, and the imagery is apt for the band's cacophonous sound: a mix of snarling guitar leads, ferocious drumming and slurred vocals, all at a barely tolerable volume. The cigarette-friendly crowd provided the requisite haze as the band tore through about 20 songs including "What Became of the Likely Lads" and "Death on the Stairs." For the show-closing singalong, "I Get Along," 30 or so fans jumped on stage to join the action. Sure, it seemed prearranged by the band's street team, but band and fans alike seemed to enjoy it.

The Libertines aren't making particularly novel or breathtaking music, and at times the show seemed curiously emotionless, but for loud, boisterous rock, they do more than just carry water.
I agree with that review almost completely…good and less good. Though I didn't find the volume loud; Radio 4 was loud. I, in fact, thought the Libertines sound was relatively lower volume…
