I had a friend in college who went around campus doing that.
He also collected soda cans and turned them in for the 5 cent refund. There was another guy who did the same, and my friend once prank called the other guy and told him to "stay off my can turf, or your ass is grass."

When i moved to Boston after high school, me and my roommate saved all of our beer/soda cans, cause we heard we could get 5cents a piece for them.
after we got several hundred cans, I took them to the grocery store, and found that it was a bad idea that we crushed them all up.
