De acuerdo Barce, cada quien con los suyo…pero Oasis es de puta madre! :)

I fully agree!

I swear it's only the hype that sold out that show. Just didn't want to say anything while tickets were selling solely out of respect for Seth and his business but was dying to.
I'm sure Vansmack is with me when I wonder how CYHSY could pass up on the OC :)
the only reason i like CYHSY is the lead singer, the rest of their sound is pretty run of the mill … he has a really unique voice, and i could see how it could be grating to some

Hoya,

Would you have traded Tampa's loss to the Skins for a Duke victory over the Hoyas?

in a heartbeat.

tampa was in the playoffs, this was a (relatively) meaningless out-of-conference game in the middle of the season, we could have made it to the NCAAs without that win … if the hoyas would have lost last night to notre dame (pulled it out in 2OTs), the duke win would have been just shot to shit … however, i'll trade a georgetown win in the NCAAs to a bucs playoff win any day, the bucs 2002 super bowl win can hold me over for another 5-6 years
Would you trade the lead singers voice for a Georgetown NCAA win?

Ok, Kosmo, Jaguar, and Fico - questions for you.

I read these boards enough to know that you all have the credentials to be black belt rock snobs but aren't. What is it about CYHSY that brings out the snark? This isnâ??t Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson. The group has gotten some publicity, but they donâ??t strike me as glory hounds or as having the same manufactured look/sound of other hyped acts (e.g. Bravery). Am I just missing the hypery? I certainly donâ??t read everything out there.

As for the music itself, it seems everyone is quick to happily dismiss the group based on a single listen. Are your first impressions always spot on? The vocals were an obstacle at first, but I agree with Hoya that now I think theyâ??re the most redeeming aspect of the sound. Their live act does need work, but I just figured that as a new group theyâ??ve got to grow into it. Iâ??m hoping to see some improvement from the BC show.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

BTW, I dig De Novo Dahl and have seen the Cedars three times now, so you know I have good taste. :)

honestly, i gave the track on a recent Paste sampler several listens and just couldn't get past the vocals… the music was by the numbers indie pop kinda twee and dreamy with lots of effects but once the guy started singing, yowsah. i found the Broken Social Scene stuff boring as well, it's got that my girlfriend brother's roomate knows someone who plays french horn, why not tack that on the end of song for effect.

personally i rather see the High Strung who remind me off the Who right before they got all Rock Operery with the thundering bass lines, manic drumming and clever songwriting, verses a bunch of guys in beards dorking around with effects pedals. as some have pointed had they been outside of Brooklyn were hype is created NME style, they would have developed a tad more before getting thrust out into a more prominent position.

i suspect that more their CD was a demo which they managed to sell more than they expected. and more and more band and record companies will be start releasing stuff that are works in progress. Yep Roc is doing it with Cities on eMusic.

i would trade a lot of things for a georgetown NCAA win … the CYHSY singer's voice would be one of the first

CYHSY had deafening buzz from blogs, pitchfork and various blogs basically catapulted this demo CD they were selling from the trunks of cars and sparingly on the internet to top 10 lists all over the world … the hypery was really huge on them, maybe just not as mainstream as the bravery

but i certainly don't think big hype necessarily makes a band unlistenable / unlikeable (and i don't think that's what kosmo and the rest are saying), if it weren't for the hype i'd never have heard these guys … i'm not a dumpster-diver when it comes to music consumption, so i actually appreciate it when bands are "broke" this way

I dead on agree with all of this!

For me, besides the very irritating vocals, I'm just not even taken with any of the music. It does nothing for me whatsoever other than want to turn it off and move on to something else. The vocals just make me want to do it that much faster.

I can understand that they would have a little bit of a following but that's just it. It's all of that hype that I would say that I don't understand except that I fully understand the power of the media and how all of that works. I still stand by my belief that a majority of those tickets were only sold to bandwagon passengers even though they don't realize they are so. Call me a snob all you want as I really don't care one way or the other but I'm not going to lie just to be nice. I'm not trying to be mean or snarky either. Only speaking (or would that be writing) my mind.

Q: "Are your first impressions always spot on?"

Hell, no! Sometimes the bands that get under my skin (in a good way) the most are some of the ones that don't grab me at first. A few examples would be Elbow, Greenspace, I Am Kloot and Amusement Parks On Fire. There are often times where it takes me a few good listens to finally get it. CYHSY only gets worse for me with each additional listen. Sorry about that but at least I'm honest.
First off, thanks for assuming I have good taste. I'll never say my taste is bad but I'd be happy to get stuck in an island with the Oasis catalogue and nothing else.

dunno…maybe their kind of music is not what I'm into..I have the new Arctic Monkeys and something tells me I'll get around to it once they're passé…I never got into any of the garage acts…this year I've been digging the new Strokes and South record..and the new Richard Ashcroft and Elefant records to some extent…my bandmates scoff at it..but to each it's own…I guess the snark comes out of feeling "out"..just like when everyone understood algebra in class and you couldn't and you get the "what is wrong with me" guilt…so maybe that's what it is…

but ignore my stupid analogies…i'm foreign :)

So what's that have to do with it? I always sucked at algebra too. Then again, I'm not your average American. Oh wait, I use to teach. My students were even worse than me!

Anyway, I agree with your analogy.
It's probably just a clever name.

Worst Career Move. Ever.

Most music careers last as long as the votive candle on my coffee table. But royalties from The OC could last a lifetime…
This thread reminded of my all-time favorite Fico quote:

Coldplay is an OUTSTANDING band…I'm a musician and I've yet to come across anyone who has mentioned BAuhuas as an influence…Coldplay keeps influencing current musicians and will prolly do the same for kids growing up…god you hipsters..

Forget the royalties…the possibility of playing a gig in front of Summer and Mini-Cooper…*salivating*…

Smackie, is Caitlin legal in "real" life?

Very true. Whether or not one likes the bands or the show, it would be a dumb career move to turn down an offer to be played on that show unless they have some other ingenious move up their sleeve. Hating the commercialism of being played on some popular tv show isn't a career move either. That's a principle to be commended or chided for, whichever stand you take. Personally, there is no way I will knock any band, especially a lesser known one, for allowing their music to be aired on this or any other show. Even CYHSY no matter how much I might not appreciate them.

Goddamn you, GGW!

I thought that I had figured out your secret the other week but it didn't work like it was supposed to. That alone still mystifies me!
