The High Dials are one of those really great bands you want to keep to one's self along with the other 30 or so appreciative and enthusiastic fans last night.
neko case and high dials

hmmm tough call as both albums are very good… it's been awhile since listening to the first so it's not as fresh as the second one. the second one is more glossy and pop then the first and i believe some fans of the first were a bit disappointed in the shift in sound. two of my favorite songs of late are on the second. so i'd go with the second and work backwards…
edit: after reading bags comment, the first record will indeed appeal more to a power pop fan, it certainly grabbed my attention, and the bands influences are more obvious on it. as the allmusic reviewer points the second represents the band developing their own sound, less power more "pop", more atomspheric and less psychedlic, etc.

Thanks for writing my review for me.
Extra bonus was the non-smoking status of the show. Wonder if it had anything to do with her throat problem?

OK, enough about the High Dials. How about Neko?!
I have one word for you: Jawdropping. As in, "The Neko Case concert was jawdroppingly good." I literally could not believe my ears how good it was. Really, it was one of the best shows I've seen at the 9:30 Club. Period. I've seen Neko perform with the New Pornographers and I have "Fox Confessor" and "The Tigers Have Spoken," but neither of those albums nor anything she's done with the New Pornos prepared me for how amazing Neko Case is solo and in person. I can't tell you how pleased I am that NPR recorded it and that I can download it for posterity's sake. I'm just crossing my fingers that the sound quality of the NPR recording does the show justice. Tonight's sound engineer should give a clinic or something, because this was one of the best sounding concerts at the 9:30 Club in a while. My hat's off to the DJ as well, who played some really good stuff in between the Martha Wainwright set and the Neko Case set. Speaking of Martha, she was really good too, I thought.
I can't really add anything new to the comments already stated about Neko. I also agree no smoking also added greatly to enjoying the show. "Fox Confessor" is my favorite CD so far this year, and live the songs were even better.
I'm sorry I missed out on the Neko show. High Dials were great as always. I'm glad they like coming through DC, I hope they can keep moving up the food chain.
Both HD albums are good, but I would go with the latest one - War of the Wakening Phantoms.

And if you still want to see the High Dials, you should run over to DC9 and catch them after Neko, looks like you will have time, as they won't go on till close to 11:30.
Agree with everything all others have already said. Great show. Definitely worth being tired for at work today. I'm glad I didn't miss it. Both Martha and Neko were hanging out after the show. They were really nice.
well as i mentioned to redsock last night, in attendence there was a very good turnout of 930 forumites and their ette's at the high dials show. possibly 30 to 40% of those there. the rest over at the Art Brut show…
'knock loud' isn't on their set list, but its on the recording! good stuff

Neko Case
"NPR loves tuning," Neko Case told a sold-out crowd near the end of her set at the 9:30 club Sunday. The show's live streaming on public radio's "All Songs Considered" program may have given her band a case of nerves, but for whatever reason, the 90-minute show seemed to have as much instrument-fiddling and off-the-cuff babbling as actual performance.
Of course this is Neko, and even with a self-proclaimed "hole in her throat," the country-noir goddess held her worshipers in rapture. Anyone familiar with Case's career outside the New Pornographers knew to take her deadpan opening statement with a grain of salt: "We will attempt to rock you." Instead, the performance kicked off with her out-of-this-world voice, harmonized with backup singer Kelly Hogan, bringing instant chills with the intro to "A Widow's Toast," the opening track of Case's new record, "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood." Case leaned heavily on that atmospheric album – filled with images of blood and death – instead of her honky-tonkish, twang-heavy early work. Also included was a softened version of Bob Dylan's "Buckets of Rain."
Case brought opener Martha Wainwright out to contribute to "Fox Confessor's" "Star Witness," but even that surprise guest appearance was delayed as Case, Wainwright and Hogan giggled at their not-terribly-amusing recollection of watching R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" the night before. The constant breaks after nearly every song made the performance seem more like a rehearsal, but the show was saved by the lovely melodies and vocals that interrupted the tinkering. The crowd went nuts when Case rather quickly came back for the first of two encores – and likely let out a sigh when what immediately followed wasn't another gorgeous vocal, but more tuning.

Margaret vs. Pauline is the opening track on my copy. Did I buy the wrong album?

It's funny. Neither my wife, nor two friends who went, nor anybody I heard talking about the show afterword in the club and on the board, made a single complaint about the tuning and the banter. Yet this reviewer saw fit to bitch about it through her entire review.
That's funny; I just received my ordered copy yesterday and was wondering the same thing. Maybe promo copies had different tracklistings?

Good lord, can that woman sing or what? I can't believe how fucking amazing her voice is. Her CDs don't do her justice - you just have to experience Neko live. I could listen to the 930 Club show over and over and over. And Kelly Hogan did a great job of backing her up.
We also saw the High Dials show - shorter set than I would've liked but I think that might have had something to do with the new drummer. I think the DC show was Max's first with the HD. George (drummer for The Dears) had been drumming earlier on the tour. Anyhow, a good solid set from the band though there was definitely something wrong with the sound. It was almost as if the drums were clipping or something.
They did mention that they're going back to Montreal to record a new record after they come back from their UK jaunt and some personal time. So hopefully we can see them again towards the end of the year.
Did I mention how bloody amazing Neko Case is? Hot damn…

it was indeed his first show with the band… i suspect the set was similiar to what they are doing on the neko dates… it would have been nice for another 30 minutes, but no complaints here.
