29 thoughts about the apparent sexiness of conor oberest

hahaha, hoya…i was just gonna post the AMG review. i don't usually agree with erlewine, but i think he is dead-on here. absolutely brutal. i fucking hate bright eyes. however, i'll be working the show and am stoked to see cocorosie, who will blow that chump off the stage.
This review is classic in that its venom is directed as much toward the media hype as the artist. Look, did Bright Eyes ever ASK to be labeled the new Dylan or any other innacurate, lazy shorthand? He's still on a tiny label, for God's sake. (If this makes him too precious, I suppose if he signed to Sony that would be terrible, too.)

His music is often way over the top and at times sloppy, which understandably offends lots of sensibilities. He makes lots of people happy, many of whom love the critic-proof acts Erlewine cites. (Imagine the record collections of Bright Eyes fans vs. say, Dashboard Confessional fans. Think there's no difference?)

And frankly, it's pretty hard to deny he has a songwriting gift, even if you hate his "image" and lyrics and general persona (which the media has been inflating to the point of caricature, and has to be annoying even the most diehard fans). He may be a guilty pleasure, but that doesn't make him deserving of this ridiculous venom.

"Oberst lacks the most basic musical skill, which is to know how to make music sound good on a sheer sonic level…"

This is his opinion, but it's humorless, myopic hyperbole that makes him look like a sloppy, petty blogger, not a respected reviewer. (How *pathetic* that he cops Beethoven! Billy Joel did it better by picking a more obscure Beethoven song! Loser!)

Anyway, it's cool to hate Bright Eyes, but don't blame him for a thousand lazy write-ups.
Regardless, his "misery look" is still cute. I have to say though, that I don't care for most of his music. And, he's definitely no Bob Dylan.
I agree 100% with the review. However, any review over 250 words makes the reviewer end up looking like a blowhard.
Forget the reviews, I wanna know why the photos were taken down. Everytime I look at them I discover something new. Yesterday it was that Steve Earle was holding a cigarette.
And you can be damn sure I told Steve that the cigarette was going to kill him if he kept it up.

i love conor

i'd totally turn gay for him
They DID play Bob Seger on The OC. Julie Cooper loves Night Moves.
I agree 100% with the review.
just wondering, have you heard the record?
I have heard several tracks off of the I'm Awake album on the radio. If they're indicative of the rest of the album, it's pretty cringeworthy. Will make me sorry I ever said anything bad about Arcade Fire.

Was that satellite radio, or are Bright Eyes getting played over the air?
I've been listening to this excellent station since Monday, when my lackey Pollard pointed it out to all of us. I've also heard him. on several other internet stations. I'm sure both albums will debut top 10 this week.

….you being the expert on that…..in more ways than one! ;)
Damn, that one guy that started this post about COnor sure did write a lot. Is it jealousy or something. He is a good looking guy… good writer, talented. My brother did sound and light for one of Bright Eyes shows and he met Conor… I guess he treated my brother like shit because he made some little mistake. So, maybe Conor's just some tragic scrawny guy with an ego… an emo boy. Elliott Smith is way better anyway. But enough about that… I am new to this area, bored off of my ass… I've already seen Bright Eyes in concert twice but I was thinking about going to this show for shits and giggles. NE one else going?
Review: Oberst's rants hurt Bright Eyes' Ridglea show
02:36 AM CST on Wednesday, February 9, 2005
By THOR CHRISTENSEN / The Dallas Morning News

FORT WORTH â?? Bright Eyes leader Conor Oberst has become the sultan of scattershot â?? putting out a country-folk album and a synth-pop CD on the same day last month.

So it was no surprise to see him shooting wildly from the hip Monday during his sold-out show at the Ridglea Theater. But at times, the bullets hit too close to home.

The 24-year-old singer started on a familiar path, peppering the show with between-song rants against the war in Iraq and President Bush. But as the night wore on and he drained yet another bottle of beer, Mr. Oberst turned surly.

"I don't know if you know this, but I hate your [expletive] state," he blurted. "I'd put a [expletive] gun to my head before I'd live in your state."

It was one of those rare moments when an audience doesn't know how to respond. Do you laugh? Boo? Cheer? Most fans reacted with awkward silence.

Later, he claimed he was only joking and tried to cushion the insult by naming Texans he admires, including Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and comedian Bill Hicks. But he couldn't leave the Texas bashing alone.

"If you came to this show tonight, you're not a normal Texan," he said after another long chug of beer. "If you were a normal Texan, you'd probably be roping steers and raping Indians."

Maybe it was all in jest â?? a bad attempt to impersonate Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. But Mr. Oberst's rants put a damper on what otherwise was a thrilling concert.

At times, things teetered on the edge of boozy chaos, especially during the show closer, "Road to Joy," when a roadie had to hold up trumpeter Nate Walcott so he didn't fall on his face.

But mostly, Mr. Oberst worked subtle magic with songs from I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, the folkier of his two new albums. He proved his knack for simple melodies and bold lyrics on "Lua," a lullaby about drugs, fame and living in New York City. Even better was "Land Locked
Blues," one of the most stirring peace ballads written in years. Fans tried to croon along to "Blues," but Mr. Oberst stopped them as soon as they began.

"The whole singing-along thing is kind of a bummer," he said, after halting the tune. "It makes me feel like Dashboard Confessional."

Then he finished the tune and treated fans to a rarity, "When the President Talks to God," a Dylan-style folk ballad that was funny, smart and concise â?? everything his between-song tirades were not.

Damn, the DC show was boring. I'm jealous. You don't go see Bright Eyes for the calm professionalism.
