That's my mother's thinking, too. She uses "colored" as a derogatory term towards other blacks because we don't use the n-word. That is verboten.

For me, ideally, I'd rather be known as a chick instead of "the black chick." :)
We went to the baseball exhibit at the Natural History Museum. On display, they had a newspaper article from some time ago which proclaimed "So and so to be named first black manager."

Yet the person who wrote the caption at the museum wrote "This newspaper shows the announcement that 'so and so will be the first african-american manager'"
Allow me to answer your question, Bollocks. You see, I'm a lazy person. Saying i'm African American takes too much energy. I'm black. Ahh! So much more simple. You're a scandinavian english american? (okay..) You're white. So much less confusion.

Just call me black, thank you. We as a people change nickname like every decade or so, so I don't expect white people (or anyone else for that matter) to keep up with them.

But negro is a bit dated. Just FYI.
Let me ask you a question if you don't mind..

To my thinking, Black denotes a race.
African American denotes nationalities which is basically what you were saying Bollocks.

For the record, there are White African Americans. They are White people who were citizens of some African country who then became American citizens. All the more proof that the term African American isn't really the best of terms to use when specifying someone's race.

"Keb Mo is one negro who should be shot" leads us to think you want him shot because he's a negro. Which I hope is not your feelings.

I was watching a hockey game one time (big surprise) and the announcer was speaking of the first African-American hockey player to get a hat trick, and then stated that he was from British Columbia.

No, they're Brasilian-American. Just like how you're Camerican. In fact, my new name for Canada is Camerica.

But it's still AMERICA.

The term isn't "African Northern American"…is it? Maybe it should be…. ;)

i am not ANY american goddamnit. I am a damn Canadian "living" in America (and not for long either!)

and you can call is Camerica if you want, but that just proves how much Americans wish they were as good as Canadians.

i can see why you are jealous!
Let's be honest, Canada is really just a semi-autonomous region of the United States. If not for government-imposed Canadiana content in the media, Canadian culture wouldn't exist.

actually, the Canadian govt is the only ones who want to be American. And thats not even true. canadians and thier govt know that, to be on America's good side and to get all of thier generous benefits, you have to pretend to want to be like them!!! (see Great Britian, only we live right next door!)

Canada has taken the freedoms and liberties associated with being American, and left out the world dominating, world power hungry natures that make the US look like a mean greedy jerk.

:)

and at least we win the gold medal in our own conutry's "pasttime" not to mention we are badass Canoers!
