Why do you get all pissed off at someone trying to make a buck?
Dylan 4/2 @ 930
Originally posted by Bollocks:agreed, its econ 101 in its purest form - if people wanna pay it, let em pay it - for people who have the tix I actually see it as a win win - either you sell for a ton of $$ or you get to see Dylan in a small club
Why do you get all pissed off at someone trying to make a buck? This is America. If you don't want to pay $850 then don't buy the damn ticket…if you want to get pissed off at someone get pissed off at the chump who pays the $850, if it weren't for people like them there wouldn't be scalpers. AND NO! It's not blame the victim, nobody puts a gun to these peoples heads to buy tickets from scalpers.
true. but it still bothers me that some people suck up blocks of tickets and sell them for outragous prices. shit, even on ebay, at least start at a reasonable price and let it get bid up instead of requiring almost a grand. its also shitty as a fan when you see people who dont even care selling tickets you would love at a price you cant afford.
Originally posted by Bags:I don't know if you're a "sharer" but there's plenty of them on here….so with that in mind, it's evidently okay to steal music from the artists so they get diddly-squat for their work, but not okay to legitmately buy a ticket, of which the artist will get their portion, then sell it for profit to someone who wasn't on the ball but really wants to go.

not just dylan, but shows in general. plus, i think you could get some decent bids before the show even got close. i mean, its bob fucking dylan!
Originally posted by Bollocks:This whole argument makes no sense at all – obviously the scalper price is high because the show is a sell out. That means the artist will get its share of all available tickets, a set amount of money regardless of who buys the ticket – and how often the tickets are resold!
[it's okay to share files] but not okay to legitmately buy a ticket, of which the artist will get their portion, then sell it for profit to someone who wasn't on the ball but really wants to go.
No?
Folks who didn't get tickets during the five minute window Dylan tix were available were not being lazy or "off" the ball…many of the folks who are looking at scalped tickets now tried to get their own through the site but couldn't.
You're talking about the "artist's take" on scalp resales? The artist sees none of that. It's not akin to file sharing, but akin to *buying* used CDs. A legitimate sale, but not flowing back to the artist in any way (except, of course, that the used CD sale may breed another fan who spends money on the rest of the artist's catalog or shows – exactly like me!).
With the way that tickets are so damn expensive to these things, it's up to the artist, not the consumer, to set a price. In my mind, scalping is like daytime robbery. You buy your tickets for the price that the artist deems necessary…if you end up reselling that ticket, in my mind the artist and venue should get a cut too. Ticketmaster are the jerks who just figured out a way to do it legally, so we pay them money for a service which we don't really need. With the internet, I just can't imagine that Ticketmaster is needed anyway…why don't we just buy tickets from the artists themselves through their sites (like Radiohead's WASTE) or through the venues? Just a thought. But scalping truly is sleazy, and that's just my opinion.

Who needs to buy a block of tickets, if you can sell a pair for $850!
Some states have serious price limitations for ticket re-selling that ebay strictly enforces. Obviously not the District.
Ebay's event ticket re-sell policy:
rules
It's hardly worth my while here in PA (+25%), but you've got unlimited potential there in good old DC.

yeah, can't you be arrested for scalping tickets on the street? I think that's true in NYC. And around the MCI center. Thank god you can sell tix for face value in front of 9:30…(though is that legal, or they just don't care…)
Silly, though… two auctions for two of the ticket items for sale on ebay don't end until after the show is over… how does that work? (Here's $800 for tickets to yesterday's show?)
Originally posted by chimbly sweep:i haven't read the text of the auction, but often the seller will put a statement like. . .high bidder at 3:00 pm will get the tickets. ebay has an option for the seller to end an auction early. . or can just put in a buy it now price and let that sit until someone buys it.

Didn't Third Eye Blind sell tickets to all their shows on one tour through eBay?
I wonder how that went.

No, I'm saying the artist gets their take on the initial purchase of the ticket….The point I was making was that it's seems to be okay to steal from an artist, but not okay to pay over the odds for a ticket you don't have that someone has for sale. The artist gets their take on the initial purchase of a cd…file sharing is stealing, plain and simple…God bless those that do it, but don't complain if they get caught.

And I don't think it was an argument..who was arguing?
Originally posted by Bollocks:That may happen with Darkness tickets. They are currently selling for $150 on eBay and the band has cancelled their last two gigs (Cleveland and Pittsburgh) and maybe cancelling tomorrow nights Philly show due to the singer having a throat problem. I didn't mean argument as in arguing, but as in a position. Not trying to start a war over this.
I still don't get your premise though – with or without scalping, the artist is getting its same share. I don't think any of the anti-scalpers were claiming that their concern was that the artists aren't being compensated (though someone brought it up after this particular discussion started)….but just that the scalpers are raping and pillaging. Though, all allowable in the free market, I agree.
