I think I had different perceptions of what this board was about than some of you. I though it was supposed to be about discussing music, shows, etc. Now that I know its about discussing certain types of music that fall under the "status quo" of a handful of people who dominate this board with thousands people that's run by a club which, last time I checked, regularly has jam bands play on their stage, I'll think twice when trying to defend a type of music I like.
Originally posted by wallawalla:You're missing my point. I don't have the slightest desire whatsoever to convince you jam bands suck, nor does anyone else here. That's exactly why most of us aren't even being slightly lucid in our arguments or comments on jam bands - we don't care at all what you think, we're contented enough with our own view. Do we have better reasons then "damn hippies"/"stoners suck"? Of course, we just don't feel the need to make an argument over the issue when 98% of the people here agree with that point of you already. You're the one who cannot accept the 9:30.com status quo and feels the need to give discertations about your point of view.
but if you really wanted to convicne me that "the shit smells" in reference to jam bands, you should know that its going to take a lot more than calling jam bands "hippy music" or saying you need drugs to listen to it to convince me other wise. Gee, I don't think I've ever heard those arguments before (that's sarcasm right there).

I don't think anybody was trying to "win over" anyone. Just defending their preferred genre of music when someone referred to it as "crappy".

Walla-Walla: Great strategy, and I hope it works. Now, when Radiohead does play around here, the tickets won't sell out in five minutes cause all the forum hipsters are too embarrassed to be seen there. Thanks, dood.
BTW: If a jam band is good (to MY ear) I'll be there standing next to you! ;) After all, I'm the chick who still goes to the Grog and Tankard if a musician I know and like is playin' there. Loyalty is NOT highly over-rated.

Hating on jam bands is the new black.

I've seen your ugly mug in that Penn State sweatshirt. Don't insult the poor hipsters of the world by referring to yourself as one. :p

and yet we get pegged as the bunch of elistist pricks
on the whole elitist prick tip … i was having this conversation with a girl at a party this weekend about the bravery, and i literally just had to walk away … i didn't want to be an asshole, and i couldn't take it any longer
anyone had a similar experience?

the thing about jam music is that i grew up listening and seeing the jazz bebop elite, miles, dexter, dizzy, stan, mingus, etc, plus fusion musicians like jaco… so in theory i would drift towards its, but once punk came along i never looked back. my one exposure to phish came in a record store where the lyric "train running load on coal" was repeated for what seemed an eternity and i seriously wanted to shoot the place up. and don't bother making recommendations i have enough music already i don't listen to….

i hate being labeled an elitist prick. most of the time, the people that are doing said labeling will get to know me and realize i know a lot more about "their" music than they think.
oh, and, by the way?
this thread has gotten ridiculous.
is everybody EVER going to agree on the same bands, the same genres, the same shows, 100%?
no. we aren't.
we ARE here to discuss music and shows and whatever the hell else we feel like discussing, but we aren't all always going to agree.
we're only human.
so please, stop picking fights on the interweb and get along.
there is a fine line between a constructive debate, and a message board brawl.

I had a long dentist appointment a few weeks ago, and they told me I could bring some cd's to listen to when the dentist was drilling my teeth. I brought a Josh Rouse and a Ron Sexsmith cd.
The (gay) front desk guy looked at my cd's unknowingly, and said, "Have you ever heard the Killers? They have this album called 'Hot Fuss', it's really good, you should really check it out." I pretended not to know who they are, though in all honesty I don't know if I've heard any of their songs.

Constructive debates are for work, school, and talk amongst friends.
Message board brawls is what this board is all about. Unfortunately, most of the people here all like the same stuff, so it gets pretty boring.

i'm in high school, for chrissake.
99% of the people they surround me with daily have NO CLUE.
quite a few people won't even discuss music with me, for fear of getting shot down.
but when they do, it's like…LAUGH-O-RAMA.
in the last six months, especially, you have no idea how many times i've gotten the
"omigod, have you heard of like…The Postal Service? they are on the Garden State soundtrack, and they are like, sooooo good!!!111one. i thought you might, like, know who they are because you like, know everything about music, and, omigod i love that song Such Great Heights. it's sooooo, like, mellow. omigod! now we have something in common!!!!11eleven"
