Name calling and personal attacks

The name calling and personal attacks on this forum have got to stop. It's gone beyond acceptable behavior in these parts and I suspect that it's making people uncomfortable beyond those who are actively involved in it. As evidenced by the low volume of posting.
Discussion of politics can be done without the name calling and personal attacks.
So get it rest.

maybe you have a point… i believe that many of us have made an effort to discuss politics here in a reasonably intelligent manner, but it's now turned into a mud slinging match, ironically not unlike the campaigns themselves.

this maybe true, but not every forum on the internet has to become a cesspool of insults 24x7… it always starts out as friendly jabs between a couple people, but it can go down hill very fast….

True. But emotional and pissed off do not have to necessarily be followed by name calling and personal attacks.
Just because people feel they can be a little harsher to someone online than face to face, and it happens everywhere else online are not good excuses to tolerate it here.

If we just banned everyone voting for McCain this wouldn't be an issue.

I do think political discussions on the internet are inherently pointless, which helps explain why they are so prone to degeneration. It's not like we're going to develop some unparalleled insights through discussion here. I try to avoid them… my bad for getting into that here, and for my role in making it personal.

I agree that talking about politics here is pointless.. unfortunately some people whenever they hear that a band is playing a concert in support of a political cause get in a tizzy and instead of talking about the band and music go political ape-shit. This happened for example on the Beastie Boys thread.
Generally I will avoid any discussion of politics here but I draw the line when someone is making fun of community organizers… thats unacceptable and I'd rather be banned than stand for that..

Question - is calling all the Obama supporters the blind sheeple that they are considered name calling or a personal attack, or would I have to make the comment like "Chaz, you're a blind sheeple"?
OR
If I say "All McCain supporters are racist bigots" a personal attack or would I have to say "Manimtired you're a racist bigot for supporting McCain"?
Just trying to understand the ground rules here.

Are you kidding? I was thinking of Obama, but Mankie, ManImtired and Julian have been so slick with their arguments that they have convinced me to vote McCain.

Also, just so I understand the ground rules: can I call people who aren't part of this messageboard names? I'd hate to have to stop referring to HopeChange as Jimmy Carter v2.0.
