as for the show itself - I was definately standing in the wrong section of the floor to fully appreciate and enjoy the show. The last show I attended where people pushing and shoving and acting like utter douches to such extremes was at a Soul Asylum show at Hammerjacks. I don't know, I thought the show was okay, just not 'great'. It was too repetitious and lacked something. too many of the songs sounded the same.
(suffice to say I really enjoyed Busy' DJ set a little bit more)
who the fuck was that middle act? ugh - what a talentless waste of time…

i thought the show overall was one big, four-on-the-floor, bassline-driven "meh".
Busy P did nothing for me. his attempts to connect with the crowd failed, as did his track selection. by the time he dropped the beastie boys, it was as if he had given up (granted, it was a step up from the techno drivel he was trying to get everyone to put their hands in the air to). plain boring.
that middle act was Wale, i believe - and 90% of that "act" involved getting the crowd "TO MAKE SOME NOOOOOOIIIIIIIISE!!!". DC, make some noise. if wanna see Justice, make some noise. if you graduated, make some noise. if you're a drop-out, make some noise (i kid you not, they said this). waching the dj of the duo try to set up his equipment while running out of things to call out to make some noise to was painful. Wale (the rapper) had good flow when he got around to rapping. sounded like they arrived late, so their set was mercifully short.
Justice were good, did their thing, but weren't particularly impressive. definitely not horrible, had me grooving most of the time but i can't say i'm looking forward to catching their next show. i had to leave 10-15 minutes before the end of their set and can't say i was particularly torn up about it.
people packed themselves down on the floor like i've never seen before, resulting in quite a bit of space upstairs. as soon as Justice hit the stage, people surged forward (which i didn't think was possible, given the density down there) and the mass of humanity proceded to lurch from side to side, far beyond any one person's control. last time i saw that at the 930 was during a gogol bordello show. looked like most people were enjoying being smooshed from side to side. personally, i was glad to have my bird's-eye view from the balcony bar.
and for the record, i counted 12 people with glowsticks in the air just as Justice started their set.

actually no, no it wasn't fun side to side might be 'fun' but being pushed forward repeatedly by some drunk cunt - who deserved to have his face smashed in - isn't what this concert or music genre is supposed to provoke.

i agree with sweetcell, despite poking fun at him earlier, about the music and setup. justice's set was a perfect reproduction of everything i've heard of theirs on cd or mp3. i didn't find myself engaged at all. i was hoping to reproduce the MIA experience. not even close.
i was caught up in the crowd that surged forward between the end of WA LAY and Justice. it was like being in a rugby scrum. the front ten rows was heavy in testosterone. one more reason to lift weights. i had to fight against the tectonic shear stresses of the under drinking age kids pushing and shoving to stay standing. i lost my shoe before regaining it. for me, surviving the scrum was the highlight of the show.

… and we come full circle: that's what i meant by justice not being meant for a rock-type setting. but what ya gonna do - they've become "big". of course they're going to try packing in as many paying customers as they can.
the Marshalls on either side of the Justice boys were empty last night. they aren't loaded with 12" Celestion speakers, they're just props with a cloth covering and an open back. they shone light straight through them. they were definitely solid at Terminal5.

btw, MEN last Friday at the Black Cat was a great dance party, despite being more than half empty on the mainstage, (because of the rainy night and competition of liberation dance party at DC9?).
The ex-LeTigre members at the laptop without the faux-Marshall's really engaged the audience. Everyone really danced *despite* their ample space.

they were super lame at Coachella and I only caught 10 minutes of it.
it's just sad that when great electronic acts come to DC, no one bothers to attend (Soulwax as an example).

yet the MP3 Daft Punk Coachella show I listened to - had me dancing - Justice 'live' - not so

That was the looniest, most eclectic crowd I've ever seen. Twelve year olds, senior citizens, ravers, and hipsters…all moshing the shit out of each other. Not to mention a gay:straight ratio of probably 2:1 towards the end of the night.
I enjoyed Busy more than Justice.
And Wale was just a waste of stage time.

T5 is pretty terrible. actually, not true - it's just souless. it's the suburban strip mall of concert venue. it's very shiny and new, cavernous, 3 balconies above the floor which is about 2-3 times as big as the 930's. feels like the megaclubs you see in the movies - a wall of humanity going straight up 4 stories. lots of space reserved for VIP areas. good sound.

Terminal 5 is a decent venue. Ive been there way too many times as of late with every show sold out. Really depends on the band (which will indicate the crowd). Nick Cave had a very different crowd than editors - with people not as pushy when he played. Id imagine Yaz would have a great crowd (id assume a lot of older folk showing up).
Sound has been really good also. Empanada Mama's is now on the 3rd floor (which is apparently being hyped up as theres mention of it quite frequently). There are still plenty of VIP sections roped off - so if you want a great spot on the railing you have to get there early. Great sight lines from the back bar also on the main floor - but it feels like youre a mile away from the stage.
Also - when shows there are sold out - its beyond packed (wall-to-wall people). The side when you walk in tends to not be insanely crowded and theres great sight lines over there. If you have a need to be towards the front - get there early (perhaps an hour before doors).

The 9:30 is the only venue that tries to have it's patrons take the metro to and from the show - occasionally they fail miserably - tonight for instance… of the numerous venues I've attended nationally, the 9:30 is the only that springs to mind that opens a full hour before the first band hits the stage - most everyother venue is half hour at the least… why is the door 8:00 anyway, what… you couldn't move the bands a half hour earlier - thanks for screwing up my night… and now I have to factor in cab money - thanks a fuckin' lot (which could have gone to say a drink or two… but oh no, you guys can be real dicks when it comes to timing this and other prior concerts [Sunday-Thursday] just right so it goes beyond the last subway of the night - that is really a rude dis-service to us who don't own cars and depend on public transit - DC isn't like NYC that has a subway open all day/night or even London, that quite frankly has an excellent night bus schedule)
This is hilarious. Did it ever occur to you that maybe the band decides when they go on and off? This is like bitching about the "930 Club's photo policy" ..the ARTIST decides this, not the club, and it varies night to night based on what the ARTIST wants. So the next time instead of being "real dicks" about it, I'll talk to Thatguy about it and maybe he can pull the plug on the artist at 11:45 so that you can catch the metro. ;)
Thanks for your well-thought-out ideas!

granted Justice has only one album to their credit, there wasn't any real justification that they started nearly 30 minutes later than the listed 10:30 start time.
Well, Wale was late, forcing Busy P to come on early and then Wale was squeezed in there and Justice came on in no time after Wale left the stage. I think the club messed up the time because they didnt even have set tiems for Wale, and also Fancy not being there Im sure screwed up the set times too. Either way, Justice killed it.

From the balcony you could clearly see that Justice totally recreates their music on stage. I was blown away, I was pissed I was on the balcony but I actually got tos ee how they were working. They have their light controls in the middle in between them and then each have 2 touch screens and midi controllers under each screen, and in the middle they have a sequence of knobs that Xavier was using heavily which is when I realized that he was actually recreating the music from those knobs and buttons. I was blown away, hate on them as much as you want but I was wayy more impressed once I saw this. Granted they probably had lots of stuff pre-mixed, but ther's sstill a good chunk of teamwork that goes into it to re-produce a lot of music and to improvise.
And what's the point of having 18 extra amps on stage? The show was/is loud enough as it is. If those Marshalls WERE real then people would be bleeding from their ears, and there's no way that those Marshall amps were real at the Terminal 5 shows because they all would have had mics to pickup the sound from them.
Their whole stage set-up is fake, the Amps and giant synthesizer. They've admitted to it… not like it's a huge surprise. It's a show… Did you know Daft Punk's pyramid is only half a pyramid!? ZOMG!

You can say that, Im not gonna argue with you. I love electronica, but believe me the 33 gigs of music on my computer is not entirely electronica. I go to live shows to be entertained and to see my favorite groups live. You people seem to go there JUST to complain about it later. That show was amazing and it was a blast, the least you could say is that you danced a bit. But no you peolpe have to nitpick about everythnig. Yeah, Justice is popular and a ton of people want to see them. You people come off like you're owed your own special tiny little venue when it's just you and your elitist friends or something.
Not to justify anything but my most played bands on my iTunes are as goes: QOTSA, Spoon, Klaxons, M.I.A., Muse, Kings of Leon, Devendra Banhart, and Arctic Monkeys.
So before you go judging a book by its cover, suck a dick.
