I do agree that the institution surrounding the pistols was full of artists…McLaren for one. But the music itself? Bollocks doesn't get a lot of replays compared to, say, "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere". Don't get me wrong - Bollocks was a vital album for its time, but the mark of great art is how well it ages. Hearing Neil Young play Down By The River at 57 is inspiring…I can't imagine the same will hold true when Johnny busts out God Save the Queen. Rule of thumb…if an old fart makes you laugh unintentionally, he's really pushing it.

hey easy there, killer.
But I think Punk and the Pistols were more closely related to high art than Neil young will ever be.
think of the work Jamie Reid, the graphic designer did and the clothes of Vivienne Westwood. Both were complete revolutions, along with the music.
You think I don't appreciate
art. You think I don't understand
fashion. You think I'm not hip.
You think I'm pathetic, a nerd,
a lard-ass fatso. You think I'm shit.
Well, you're wrong. 'Cause I'm
champagne. And you're shit.
And till the day you die, you,
not me, will always be shit.
Sex Pistols
Above average songs?! Hell, even Ohio is a great song AND it predated the whole Sex Pistols screw the gov't thing. Try putting on Heart of Gold, Old Man, and Hey Hey My My and tell me those songs are above average.

How many artists who were around in the late 60's are still at the top of their game in 2003?
Tom Jones
Stones (unfortunately)
Jesus, even Cinnamon Girl and Southern Man are awesome.

Hey, hey, my, my, the "king" is back and he's not forgotton . . .
I'll give you Bowie, but the Stones haven't put out much anything good since Tattoo You…
Tom Jones I admit I'm a bit ignorant of. Isn't he the guy old ladies throw their undies at?

anything Neil did without Crazy Horse pretty much makes me wanna take a nap… :p
Rotten may be a jerk and pompous, but he's also pretty damn bright. It's unfortunate that Sid overshadowed just what a sharp tack he is. And it's a shame that people forget how amazing some of PIL's early stuff is too. I would never say he's a genius, but he's probably underrated. I just wish he would have let the Pistols be instead of cashing in, because I'm afraid this is one scenario where they really are doing it for the money.
I'm mostly here at my job for the money. I guess I'm just like Johnny Rotten. What's wrong with doing something that's going to pay the bills?

As it happens I dont think Bowie has release an album that will be regarded as a classic for 20 years…..
Let me clarify, I think those are great songs.

Just because Mike Tyson or Ali are old and fucked now doesnt mean they were not two of the greatest in the ring.
Cant judge on still being able to perform. Old punks look pathetic whatever way you cut it. Sold out or pathetically trying to hang on to their youth.
I think the actual album, never mind the bollocks, still sounds as good as say the strokes or what have you, that was released 25 or so years later.

Neil Young is a great artist
The Sex Pistol as invisioned by Malcom McLaren were a great event.
Neil Young is not only continuing to create great music, his songs have (un)fortanetly help payed many of CSN bills, he's dabble succesfully and unsuccessfully in other genres and he owns part of Lionel Trains.
The Sex Pistols made lot of headlines, released one "classic" record, split up, had other musical adventures, ran out of ideas and cash, and reformed.
The Sex Pistols at the 9:30 club will be a event, at any other larger DC area venue it would have be just another concert I would have no qualms about passing on.
Johnny Lydon is the only member who had "real" post Sex Pistols success. His VH-1 TV was brillant but I never heard his radioshow. Which was probably good given his quotabitlity. The rest… Well who could forget Steve Jones solo records or Checked Past with Michael Des Barres or the Neurotic Outsiders. Paul Cook hasn't done much other than played most notably with Edwyn Collins. Glen Matlock released a solo record currently gathering dust somewhere in my collection.

I think Never Mind the Bollocks sounds as good as the Strokes as well. Glad we can agree on that one.
