What will the keynote bring?

Apple unveiled an iTV (hello trademark infringment, expect a new name) which is a new iTV device:

- has 802.11 wireless built in
- wired networking
- USB
- an HDMI connector
- and also component video
- analog audio and optical audio.

It can controlled with an Apple remote and hooks directly to a TV or to set-top box or home theater system.

The point of iTV is to allow movies and TV shows downloaded to a computer to play on a TV in another room. Movies downloaded from iTunes will be 640x480.

And Apple added a matchbook size Shuffle.

Before you upgrade to iTunes 7, make sure you don't mind living in silence for an hour.

Easily noticed upgrades:

1) Automatcially downlaod album artwork
2) Determining Gapless Playback

Depending on the size of your collection, it could take a while. My work computer (4700 songs) is upgrading and it's been about 20 minutes. It's on song 1000.

My home computer has 5 times as many songs…
I was about to upgrade before I read this. What's the "gapless playback" feature?

EDIT: Nevermind, just found it…

I always thought iTunes had it. It's the iPod that doesn't have it, but really should.

For those that don't know, it's the ability to play multiple tracks with no pause between them.
I decided to stop the gapless playback thing and listen to music. Not sure if it's doing it behind the scenes.

It's still looking for album art work though - 198 of 496. Kind of a cool feature that's been available in many other players for some time.

There is a new picture view that will show the picture of the last album you listened to, the current album you're listening to and what's up next (at least on party shuffle).
mine is updating, taking forever, i dont remember how many tracks i have on there, somewhere around 27000

it may almost be done, yay
I really dig this album cover view.

It's nice to finally see the album covers for albums I may have "procured" and not necessarily purchased.
shit, it started something new, looks like it may actually be a while still

You can play music while the album art is downloading. I'm pretty sure I cut off my Gapless Loss thing though. Not entrirely sure how to do it again either…

it is doing the gapless loss thing now, it is on 227 of 27500, will take hours, my mac is old and slow
Note to self: Always check the forum before updating iTunes software.

(…he says as he stares at the "Updating iTunes library" progress bar.)
I've got OS X 10.2.8 – not paying to upgrade my system to look at CD covers.
Looks like the gapless play could be a real non starter as the iPod still doesn't support it. So what iTunes is doing is to create one large file for each album and then creating cue sheets to get the gapless playback on the iPod. Seems kinda of brain dead as doesn't listening to large files on the iPod consume more battery?
dunno but i think that playing flash based games on the 5g ipods is pretty cool.
Is there a way to upgrade without dealing with the gapless play?

dunno… i rarely use iTunes
It really wasn't that bad. I have about 14000 songs in iTunes and it took about an hour.
I like that it gets the artwork for you, but I still have quite a few albums it can't find cover art for….and these aren't obscure titles or anything.

i made the mistake of doing it with my ipod plugged in which seemed to confuse it, mine still isnt done

I just played a song while it was doing the gapless play thing and it halted it.

You can force a resume art work, but I haven't figured out how to resume the gapless playback check (not even sure I want to, but it would be nice ot know).
