sadies, you still got those tickets? I'd love to make the drive again tonight (even thought it means missing 24) and see the show again. i had a blast last night.
IT BEGINS! B&S Tickets
by the way, for all you B&S nerds…what's the best album to start off with? i know their setlist was from all sorts of albums last night, and included a lot of old stuff…any recommendations on a starting point? my itunes music store giftcard is begging to be used.
what time did show end last night… trying to decide between driving or metroing…
If you're feeling sinister and dear catastrophe waitress are the only essentials in my book (and I have four others). guess that means I'm not a B&S nerd, but those are the best, in my book.

Originally posted by chokeychicken:"if you're feeling sinister" is the essential LP …. most of their best work, however, is on EPs, which are all collected on the double-CD "pushing barman to open old wounds" … i would definitely start with those two

As a newer B&S fan I was of two minds regarding the show. I really dig The Life Pursuit, I think it's a great album and will get repeated play. Thus, it was good hearing Suki, Funny Little Frog, etc.
On the strength of The Life Pursuit I bought Dear Catasrophe Waitress. It doesn't do it for like like the Life Pursuit did.
The sound and banter during the show were excellent and I was glad to hear the back catologue, but there were few tunes that really caught my ear.
The fans seemed generally happy and glad to be there and that energy poured over to me somewhat.
On the negative side, I was standing in the worst possible area of the club, it was late and I had to work the next morning. This all weighed in at various points and put a damper on the experience.
Also, the fact that I didn't hear anything that really motivated me to run out and get Tigermilk or Sinster makes me question my the excitement that The Life Pursuit generated.
Who knows, most likely I'll get the albums, love them, and then wish I had been more familiar with the set list when I saw them last night.
NPs are fine. Great melodies/harmonies and they seemed cool with the banter. I probably would have enjoyed their show back in October when they were the main event. But nothing would have kept me from seeing Rollins that night.

a disclaimer, these are two of my favorite active bands, and it was the first time i'd seen either live
i enjoyed the new pornos set, but i just love hearing the songs ("the body says no" was a highlight for me) … i could tell they weren't at the top of their game, but i liked the all-request feel to the set (i was yelling for "on the table") and it definitely warmed me up for B&S
i'm not sure how many of you were stage right, maybe 10 feet out from the food window, but there was this group of 5 or 6 girls there who might have been the most annoying people i've ever seen at a show … one of them started complaining during the first song that "everyone here thinks they're too cool to dance," (this is during "stars of track and field," mind you) … they then proceeded to throw elbows, dance wildly to every song (no matter how slow), and chat up any single guy in a 10-foot radius … one of them literally talked throughout the entire show, she was physically incapable of keeping her mouth shut for more than 1-2 minutes … needless to say, we got the fuck out of there and moved back to the bar about 20-30 mins into the show
moral of the story? dancing is not always cool.
anyway, i really liked the B&S set … not having seen them before, i was expecting them to be much more introverted and awkward, i was really surprised to see how much of a rock star stuart is … he was bouncing all over the stage, making witty banter, even doing some morrissey-esque hand movements at some points … his voice sounded really strong, just much more confident then i expected him to be
"electronic renassaince" off of "tigermilk" was definitely a highlight (wasn't expecting to hear that one) … "jonathan david", "string bean jean", and "a century of fakers" were really nice … although i love "get me away from here," it was definitely a weak closer, i would have taken "boy with the arab strap" in a heartbeat as a rolicking closer
the problem with seeing them (similar to wilco, or a bunch of other vets from the 90s) is that they just have too deep a catalogue to hear all of my favorites … i guess i missed the boat, but i have some live shows from the late 90s, and the setlists are just perfect on those … oh well, i really did enjoy their set, and seeing them definitely takes some of the mystery out of the band, they seemed pretty normal to me

Chokeychicken, if you have an iTunes gift card, pick up the exclusive live version of "If You're Feeling Sinister". I much prefer the live version of the album to the studio one. You won't regret it!
Personally, I am a huge fan of the "Jonathan David" and "I'm Waking Up To Us" EPs. Very good stuff. All of their LPs have something to offer, though "The Life Pursuit" is one of the strongest ones in my opinion. And I know that a lot of people are luke warm on it, but I still think "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant" is a really solid record, even if there are a couple songs on it which are just OK.

kidding.
Anyone listening to this NPR thing? The interviewer sounds totally disinterested and disconnected.

Originally posted by HoyaParanoia:i'm starting to rethink going to this spot every time i come to the club for a sold-out show … sure, there's great sight-lines and usually some space even when the place is packed, but for some reason it seems like a magnet for at least one pack of loud drunk girls … any other suggestions for a good spot for a sold-out show?

so apparently they're now offering more tickets at face value?
which really sucks considering I paid $80 for mine on ebay. AO(SJDF I am having the worst luck with this show. but it should be really great nonetheless.

Ahh, so I'm a bit late, but I went to the show last night. I'd never seen them before and thought they were absolutely fabulous. I really wanted to hear Step Into My Office Baby, but I suppose that was made up for with Century of Fakers, which I also enjoy. (Really wanted to hear Seeing Other People & Le Pastie…) The New Pornographers…let's just say they were amusing. They wouldn't play the song I kept shouting, and I assume they heard me (I was in the very front row, we got there around 5:30), but I suppose it's because Neko Case would have had to be there. The drummer was the best part. He was just plain awesome.
We had to leave early - because the metro stops running at 12, I guess. That kind of sucked. So we missed the encore and several of the ending songs.
But what made up for it was, on the way out, I heard this guy shouting at me if I wanted to eat chili dogs with him across the street. Then I realized it was the New Pornographers and their drummer, still drunk on the wine. :) It was so cute. I really wanted to go, but I had to go home. They kept pleading for us to come. It was great.

By any chance, were you among the group of dancing girls stage right?

I really enjoyed B&S last night, though I don't know if they were any better than when I first saw them at Constitution Hall (Maybe it was the first time excitement thing. I really enjoyed all of the Tigermilk era selections and was thoroughly impressed with all of the new material.
I too would recommend If your feeling sinister
As for the New Pornographers, I'm only mildly familiar with them, and while they weren't terrible last night (I enjoyed the songs), their performance didn't make me want to go out and buy some of their collection.
Hope Stuart gets a medium tonight

I'm really excited about tonight. Although, I'm worried that they will play past midnight again, because that will mean that I'll be leaving early to catch the metro

Unless you're talking about random people offering tickets for face value. That always happens – last minute, friends bail and folks not out to make a buck have tickets available they just want to get rid of. A friend of mine had FIVE tickets available for last night's show at 4:30 that day.
