edit: thats weird, I'm on the mailing list and havent recieved that email.

The show was great last night and I'm sure you won't be dissapointed :)
EDIT: I just realized we were stage LEFT and nowhere near the food stand. So…no, that wasn't us :)

Ah, Lukas, you'll probably need to leave early :(
tickets set aside for bands, etc sometimes get sold at the last minute, it's rare though…

I was stage left too, and there was a large contingent of chatty girls of the scream "I love you" and grab at Stuart when he walked by variety.

Irritating people are at every show, especially down near the front. I've learned to tune them out.
Neko Case
"Fox Confessor Brings the Flood"
(Anti-)
CD Reviews: The New York Times

It would have been easy for Neko Case to stay retro. Ms. Case, who was born in Virginia and has lived in Seattle, Chicago and Vancouver, British Columbia, has a torchy voice that's part Patsy Cline, part Loretta Lynn, and it sounds right at home in country weepers or folk-rock anthems. Onstage, Ms. Case still sings her share of love songs. But she isn't content with straightforward stories or simple declarations any more.

On her most recent albums, and as a member of the mostly Canadian songwriters' collective the New Pornographers, she has moved toward more imagistic, even cryptic songs. Apparently the New Pornographers satisfied Ms. Case's frisky side, because her new album, "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood," turns inward with ballads and waltzes.

Ms. Case produced the album, recording in Arizona with members of country-stretching bands like Giant Sand and Calexico. The music is rootsy but not traceable to any particular era. The guitars might use an old-fashioned twangy reverb, but they're likely to get an undertow of cello or an unexpected twist to the chord progression. And while Ms. Case sings like a honky-tonk sweetheart, she's lavishing her emotion on lines like "It's not for you to know, but for you to weep and wonder/ when the death of your civilization precedes you."

Memories interweave with fantasies, observations with fragments of narrative. For every clear-cut song about troubled love, like "Hold On, Hold On" or "That Teenage Feeling," there are two with far more elusive imagery. At first, the songs can seem remote and arty, but gradually they start to add up; they're filled with a sense of loss and a hope for transformation. It's still an album more for the head than the heartstrings, but Ms. Case isn't keeping her distance. Just the opposite; she's unveiling what haunts her. JON PARELES

You don't hate me now, do you? I didn't talk at all. But I was with several people who were younger than me and very loud, who kept leaving to smoke and shoving themselves back in. It was annoying.

Hope we didn't spoil your fun.
I'm trying to listen to the npr webcast tonight but I have a mac and I don't have a real media or windows player… any help?
download either of those programs
I just figured out Stuffit was needed.

Thanks!

I don't hate you, haha. I'm sure you were one of the well behaved ones. I had a terrific time, nothing could have ruined that show for me. I'm a teenager myself, so it just especially irritates me when other people contribute to that unfortunate stereotype of my demographic.
excellent show, B&S were fantastic, New Pornos were good, although hampered by a lack of female vocals

A pretty fantastic show…Seymour Stein was the alternate to She's Losing It. I've never seen them play that, it would have been interesting.
They also played "To Be Myself Completely" after "Loneliness…" Kind of an add in.

Wow. Carl Newman's finger busted open and bled, so the guy in front of us fainted and collapsed. Then my girlfriend decides to re-do her sister's hair during B&S's first song, so Stuart calls them on it, telling some story about how it's kinda like knitting during disco shows(?). Interesting night for us :)

New Pornographers did as well as they could without Neko's or Kathryn's voice. I actually thought they were going to have Kurt attempt Neko's lead in "The Rules Have Changed"…the audience coulda pushed harder on that one. And having someone with a semblance of a voice (Kurt) sing a Dan Bejar song ("Jackie") made the song so different. Almost adorable. Huh.

If Belle & Sebastian weren't having fun, they certainly fooled me. Can't complain about the song selection, and energy seemed way up. There was a nice rapport with the audience, and banter amongst the band members was both playful and sincere. "Forgive me, America, for I have sinned."

Great show, and so happy NPR recorded this one.
Great show, the B&S have certainly come into thier own as peformers… The sound level and mix was perfect. They maybe become a band worth seeing multiple times on the same tour… heck i'd dj for free to get the chance to follow them around.

definitely need to figure out a DC artist's song they can cover the next time through… hearing them do "Waiting Room" would be something unique. but Eva Cassidy, "Da Butt" or streching it to the Slickee Boys or Foo Fighters could work.
Last night was my first time seeing the the NPs and while I appreciate the catchiness of the songs am still ambivalent towards as I'll give the records the odd listen but little more. Seeing as Kathryn's voice was shot and none of the girl singer songs could be performed , it got a bit tedious as the set went on when they couldn't decided what to play next. Carl's comment about not liking boy singer bands and specifically mentioning Fall Out Boy, Hawthone Hieghts and All-American Rejects was funny. And they played "Graceland" and acknowledged it being a request for the previous night. It's probably just a personal pet peeve, but get a freakin' guitar tech to tune your guitars and stop doing it between songs on stage.
I was looking forward to DJing one of these two shows, but B&S nixed the DJs for thier own tunes. However, since I've been planning my setlist for awhile, a couple of us DJs will get together and post our own shadow playlists in a day or two. Then you all can grade us :D
I think Kosmo summed it up pretty well. I have all three of the New Pornographers CD's, and as good as they are don't quite measure up live. Wish I had seen them with Neko. Overall, pretty entertaining though, especially when one of the guys tried to put a band-aid on Newmans finger.

Belle and Sebastian were great! The sound was fantastic and good setlist too. I hope they do come back here in the summer.
Now all B&S needs to do is setup a Fan Club so I can easily get tickets for multiple shows :D
I went to the show on Sunday, and now wish I could have gotten tickets for both nights.

I actually really liked the New Pornographers. They were very charming, laughing and joking with the crowd. Maybe I was lucky that I got *some* female vocals, but I was very happy with them.

B&S…wow! I'm a little sad to see that "The Blues Are Still Blue" and "Judy" got played last night and not on Sunday…
