I also thought they were chunky! In general I was unmoved by the show - I like their music but more as background while I work music and it didn't work for me at all live, despite having, as Darth Ed said great sound

what time did you guys get out of there last night? I'm coming from Williamsburg, and i've gotta decide whether to crash at a local friend's house for the night, or head back straight from the club.

The show ended at 11:15…although it seemed to take 30 minutes to exit the club and I was standing near the back.

Very solid show and I agree that the sound was fantastic last night.

I would have loved to here a few more from the Stars…they didn't play Calendar Girl or Heart which was a disappointment.

I must say, I don't love sold out shows at the Club…(Social Distortion's going to be nuts, I have a feeling – definitely shows vary in their annoyance, with Queens of the Stone Age being the most crowded I can recall…). It's just a tad too crowded (versus the Ambulance Ltd sold out show Saturday that still had some breathing room). I headed to the loo about 5 songs in, and just couldn't muster the gumption to try to push back up to where I'd been near Kurosawa and some other friends. But, it's true, even at the very very back, the sound was great. And I think they do put on a good show. The music was great, the mix (both techical mix and set list) was great and diverse. It's a Sunday, I've seen a lot of shows that past couple of weeks, I'm pretty beat, so I headed out during the last song of the encore. But glad I went.

I enjoyed Stars too. And like Ed, would have bought a CD but $15 is about $4 more than I'd probably pay other places. While I usually prefer to buy CDs at shows because I have this notion that bands make more off of them, the dual pressure of the price and not knowing which of two to get kept me from buying them there. Recommendations welcome…

Fans are generally split between whether Heart or SYOF is the better record. Heart has 2 tracks that SYOF cannot touch, but SYOF is the better all around record, and I'd recommend that.

I don't have the setlist, but they mainly played stuff off SYOF.

Both bands were really good. I'd go again tonight, if I wasn't going to a show tomorrow night, and the next night…

Stars were excellent! Most of the set was from SYOF and by far is the CD I'd recommned.

When you buy a CD from the store, about eight cents on the dollar goes to the band (but goes against their recoupable debt which is usually substantial). When you buy a CD from the show, 100% goes to the band and doesn't have to applied towards recoupable debt. So while I agree with you that $15 IS a little too much to pay for a CD at a show, the fact that the band is getting all of it is enough to make me buy it anyways.

Sorry I didn't see anyone - I was upstairs against the balcony. I lined up with the all the 12 year olds in order to get a prime spot. I *rarely* line up before shows and in the last week, I've lined up for Foo, New Porns, last night for DCFC and will do so again on Wed for BSS. Ick….

Jack double shots were a great idea. I can't remember much of last night after the Stars set (great by the way). But standing in the back getting drunk was great. I will have to make an effort to pay attention to DCFC on Thursday night. I have to say I had such a good time that I am using a sick day.

Yeah, I usually do too. Should have last night, but it was as much not knowing which CD to buy. I feel kinda bad, now. Oh well, I did pay for a ticket, after all!

Did any of you pre-order from DCFC's site? How'd that work out?

Disco Rodeo isn't THAT bad. Its no 930, but I'd put it on the same level as cat's cradle. Take the balcony of 930 and put it around the edges of the main floor, and thats about the size. As for horrable sight lines, i don't know what other kind of sight line you can have rather than looking eye level right in front of you, but maybe someone was talking about the lack of a balcony level.

For parking, its in an area with a bunch of storage/warehouse type places in Raleigh. Parking is pretty ample, but I can't rule out you having to parallel park.

I have mixed feelings on this. I like the idea of the band getting a larger cut of the money. But if they're charging more than the going rate and getting about 14x their normal profit - it just seems a little high. Wouldn't they be better off selling CDs for say $12? They'd still be making about 11x their normal profit and it's cheaper than places like amazon.com. I'm all for helping the band, but I don't have money to throw away. I already bought a ticket - don't expect me to over-pay for a cd.

Last night Stars was charging $10 for a 7"-single. I don't think it was a double. That's crazy. As much as I enjoyed their set, I didn't buy anything from Stars. I did walk out with a $7 DCFC ep though.

I hear you Chutney. If the Stars CDs had been $12, I absolutely would have gotten one. In fact, if they'd been $10, I just would have bought both full length CDs. For some odd reason, $15 is a balking point for me…

Well the band isn't probably get all of that, many venues take a percentage of merchandise sales. Also, it's not like the CD was given to band for free, some record companies provide x number of free and most sell them to the at a wholesale price. And if it's a self released CD, then the band has to recoup manufacturing and recording costs. All that said I do buy lots of CDs from touring bands if all it means is they have gas money to get to the next gig.

Just for the record, I fully appreciate the concept of buyings CDs at concerts. I probably purchase CDs at about half the shows I attend. And if I know I'll be attending a concert in a few weeks for some artist that just released a new CD, I'll often put off buying that CD until I attend the concert, so that as much of my cash goes directly to the artist as possible. It's a very rare Black Cat show that I don't go home without at least one new CD. That said, the cost of the CD should be at least comparable to Amazon's price, for example. And don't forget that most albums can be downloaded for $9.99 via iTunes. A real CD with liner notes is worth a little extra to me, but anything more than $12 and I'm not buying basically.

I don't believe the assertion that Stars would have gotten all $15 if I had purchased a CD at the show. Surely, the 9:30 Club gets a cut of the merchandise sales? Someone has to pay the salary of the person who is staffing the merchandise booth. I suspect it's that cut which explains why CDs typically cost more at 9:30 Club shows than at Black Cat shows. CDs and T-shirts at Black Cat shows often seem to be sold by someone affiliated with the bands. At 9:30 shows, the merchandise booth is usually staffed by 9:30 Club staph, right? If so, the 9:30 Club has to be getting a cut of the merchandise sales. The Black Cat probably gets a cut too, but maybe it's not as high as the 9:30 Club wants?

fun show last night … dragged a little towards the middle-end of the set when they played some of their snoozers, but they sounded really inspired for the most part … a few of the older cuts were really nice, and i like how they got "soul meets body" out of the way relatively early … encore was great

crowd was strange, a lot of backwards hats and high schoolers, but it kind of comes with the territory now … chimbly, were you expecting a crowd of 200 dour looking hipsters?
