Yea but I forgot, this thread is titled bands of the new millenium/decade so the guy has a point.

As for Mars Volta, they're not part of any defined genre I'm aware of as they seem to be on a planet of their own, so yea, I'd absolutely file them under the blanket "indie" term. That and they always seem to be playing Coachella, Bonarro or Lollapalooza. ;)
Despite the hype, I found Margot and the Nuclear So & Sos to be terrible post-emo garbage.
For me, its the Shins.

where is the hype on them? I must have eliminated sources of hype from my life because the only person I have heard they were good from is Brennser, he is a hype machine

and I actually do like them, and have disliked most of the stuff being discussed on the board this year

All Music said "What The Dust of Retreat does for indie rock in 2006 is almost everything Neutral Milk Hotel wanted to do in 1998 with In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." I mean, give me a break.
No, they're actually one of the few good indie bands.

did you ever consider maybe Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of the most overhyped records of all time? I mean I loved that album, but its held up as the indie holy grail far too often

I hardly consider an allmusic review as being overhyped, I dont think many people read those, I usually just go there for basic biographical information or to see the discography

but I also understand a negative association with a band based on something like that

I knew very little about Margot before listening to them, and probably only like half the album, but the last couple of years of music that seems to be about as good as it gets for me, at least there is some hope, I heard a clip of a High Strung song on Mtv the other day, dont even know what show it was on

come on now … you're really saying there hasn't been an album (or a few) in the last couple of years that you didn't like front to back?

sure there have been a few, but not anywhere near as many as a few years ago

in 2005 and 2006 off the top of my head, albums good all the way through:
The Oranges Band - The World and Everything In It
Deadboy and the elephantmen
The HIgh Strung - Moxie Bravo
Go Betweens - Oceans Apart
The National - Alligator
