nah, that would be an insult to the insane. i'll just call you narrow-minded. you automatically can't relate to music that was written before you were born? no questions asked, simply because of date? i take it all classical music is out - a shame. personally, i try to let the music stand on its own merits, regardless of when it was written/performed. maybe i'm crazy.
I'd like to know where someone like Bowie falls on your list. Now Im not sure when you were born, but Bowie has been around forever and he is still around. So does that mean early Bowie is out, but current Bowie is in? Clearly what he was writing about in his early stuff has to do with the times, which I guess you cant connect with. Same with the Stones. Still around.
Thats the weakest excuse Ive ever heard of why a band is the worst. Go take some Music Appreciation courses such as Music 101 (or something with a similar title) and go trace the roots to current day music.
And for a band that wears their influences on their sleeves - check out The Dandy Warhols. Guess you could like them, but not the Velvet?

You know, the good thing about music is that its SUBJECTIVE. There's no formula for what's good and what's not.
I definitely think Brian's out of his mind to list those 5 songs as better than anything the Beatles, etc. released. But it's music. In the end, who gives a shit what he likes? Are we that combative that we need him to fall in the ranks with the rest of us?
Besides, the only good reason to not like Zepplin (derivative rip-off of the blues) is to over-analyze and over-intellectualize it. I'm listing to "Dazed and Confused" as I type this, and I really don't care if it's ripping a paycheck out of Robert Johnson's starving great-grand children's hands. At the end of the day, it just SLAYS. Isn't that what matters?

Agreed. But not because of his/her music taste. Rather, because he/she can't spell "tries" (or masturbation).

Idiot.

Definitely Maybe is great but the Beatles suck. So do T Rex.
Also, I love America but the Constitution is pretty lame.

Thanks, Sir HC! Definitely the point I was going to make.
And, Kosmo - whew. I was perplexed for a moment when I read your initial KISS statement.

oh, and Rush. I don't even think what they produce is music. It's so awful on so many levels.

Now it's official. You really are just trying to be controversial. Pathetic.
Just a small addition to the epistle…
I genuinely hate the Beatles, et al. I have NO idea what they are talking about. It's all simplistic, naive, emotions-with-Crayons. Please people, cut the BS. You aren't your parents. There is no Harold Bloom-approved rock' n' roll canon. It is acceptible to hate the Beatles. I just fear if Hilary Clinton gets elected there will be some legislation passed the requires every American to pledge allegiance to 60's baby-boomer nostaliga.
Just be honest. Listen to songs like Death Cab for Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" or Modest Mouse's "Ocean Breathes Salty" or Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" or Jason Mraz's "You and I Both" or even Smashing Pumpkin's "33." All incredible songs that make me glad to be alive when they were released. Would you rate anything the Beatles or Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd ever recorded over those five songs? Really? Ok, then I withdraw my statement. I'm not trying to change people's minds.
I strongly prefer music that was made while I was alive that connects with me. Call me crazy.
Brian
Sounds like you like soft stuff to put on eye makeup and emote in front of the mirror to, so with that in mind here are a few songs that you might like from the bands you hate:
Across The Universe
The Rain Song
Thank You
A Pillow of Winds
And how does 33 by the Smashing Pumpkins make you feel all tingly when they're apparently one of the bands you hate? Consistency son!

saying zep is a rip-off of other blues artists is to ignore the history of blues - every bluesman borrowed from other bluesmen. in the words of jimmy page, the marks of a good bluesman is to "make it your own". did zep use a phrase from here and lyrics from there? yup, just like countless blues acts before them. did anyone sound like zep, at the time? no, their style of electric blues was unique.

dont get me wrong - music is definitely subjective. and ive got no problem with that. besides a lot of stuff i love, half the board hates, and i could care less.
i guess my point is - before you go off slagging all bands pre-80 (or whatever year he chooses), he might want to consider if it werent for these bands, a bunch of these other bands might possibly not exist.
and btw - i think most people should take any sort of music class to better appreciate other types of music. i certainly appreciate classical music and jazz a bit more than i once did.
and i thought the subject was THE WORST BAND EVER! are the beatles that painful to listen to that its even worse than say Creed? hell i cant stand wolfmother (and one of my best friends loves them), but i certainly wouldnt call them the worst band ever.

I pledge no allegiance to the Beach Boys… I respect how Brian Wilson's production, and arrangements influenced people but the songs in general are insipid..
Now I have to completely disagree on the Marc Bolan/ T. Rex front, seeing as he served as a primary influence on UK Punk. He released more than his fair share of filler, but when he was on it was amazing. Unfortunately, he died right at the time when punk was beginning to take off and I think a revitalized Bolan would have rose back to the ranks of Bowie then.

But it was just that skill at arranging, producing and
music composition (and a lot of the theory that goes along with that) that elevated rather simple sentiments to the sublime. Deep it ain't but it was for 2 minutes and 45 seconds.

John Mayall's group was doing the blues rock thing prior to Led Zep. His group started the careers of Clapton, Terry Green and Mick Taylor. Fleetwood Mac was started life as a blues rock band formed around the time Zep did.
as well as what Terry Reid was doing who was Page's first choice for singer for Led Zep and who was unavailable due to already being signed as a solo artist.

the whole thing is i would rather listen to Paul Revere and The Raiders and Love than the Beach Boys. many cite "Pet Sounds" as the record they listened as awkward teenagers. my record of choice was Cheap Trick's "Live At Budakon"

BTW - that performance changed my life. I was 10 and was mesmerized by the bands energy and Bono's showmanship. For once I felt as though I had found a band that wasn't my parents favorite. They took us to see The Pretenders, Stevie Nicks and David Bowie and I left the biggest U2 fan on the planet.
If that's a DVD and I could get copy of it, I'd be happy to compensate you.
