The Olympic Thread

Why is it that many of the NBC olympic commentators have names that remind one of fish?

Jim Lamprey

Al Troutwig
russia v. slovakia on MSNBC right now, probably the best matchup of the day …
Slovakia vs. Canada for the Gold Medal..

and how excited can Ovechkin get EVERY time he scores a goal….he may be my new favourite player…
the slovaks are the real deal, not sure if their goaltending can hold up all tournament though … russia doesn't look as good as i thought they would (if they had 'bulin they'd be contending for a medal) … it was fun watching latvia and switzerland the last couple of days, they've really shown a lot of heart … david aebischer (swiss) put in one of the best performances in net that i've seen in a while against the czechs …. sweden and the US look like shit
that snowboard cross is A LOT of fun to watch, i almost wish it were a longer course so we'd see more passing and bumping … would be a good video game …

and the point still stands…sure you'll end up with a boatload of medals (most of them in those newfangled sports that were designed to boost US medal totals) but there have been a bunch of flops/dissapointments…Ohno, Miller, the snowboardcross woman etc etc

you and i both know that hype never automatically translates to medals, i wouldn't consider media hype and no medal to be a dissapointment, unless you're NBC … now, that women's snowboardcross is a BIG flop
PS: I'm getting sick of the ESPN intelligentsia ripping on the olympics, i'm really enjoying them this year

The last three sports added to the winter olympics were:

1. Curling - invented in Scotland and far more popular in Europe and Canada than in the U.S.
2. Skeleton - Developed in St. Moritz. Big in the Alpine countries.
3. Snowboarding - Maybe you can say this is a U.S.-favored sport, but considering it's become the most popular winter sport (after skiing), I don't see how it could have ever been excluded from the Olympics.

i keep telling people, and i will say it again.

TSN.CA

its better coverage of international sports and hockey. if you want news on anything going on that doesnt ONLY concern America, go there. if you want MLB, NFL, NBA or NCAA news, you can go to ESPN, otherwise, you just end up with watered down, misinformation, with some bad humour mixed in

oh, and Canada has been pretty darn disappointing this olympics too.

i think you need to recognize the difference of someone complaining and someone poking fun.
poor Rob - always taking things so seriously

anyway, well done to everyone for quite rightly jumping to your countries defence….I was only trying to get a rise out of you all

as I'm quite sure my kids are going to be supremely talented at both summer and winter olympic sports I'm sure we'll face a tough decision down the road as to whether the compete under the Irish, Filipino or US flags!

what about the short track skating? that was recently introduced, wasnt it?

and curling was in the Olympics as a demonstration event many times since 1924.
