Top Five Fave Drummers

There's probably others I'm forgetting…

Bagster, you've got to come up with more than 4, you saw 4 drummers this week alone! ;-)
Well, at the Backstage, I can't see the drummer… :D

To be honest, I don't always take note of the drummer unless he or she is amazing. I shoulda included Stewart Copeland, my bad.

And you had to bring up this weekend, as I skipped the Dirtbombs, with TWO drummers!! SHIT. You're just tryin' to make me feel bad, tooms!

(Gotta say, two drummers doesn't usually bode well for me; when does it really improve a band's sound?)
No one mentioned Phil Collins????

Also, along that note, Tommy Thompson, who drummed with Genesis on tour and Powerstation
two drummers doesn't always help if they're playing the same thing–what's the point? I remember watching a 38 Special video back in my younger days and they drummers played exactly the same thing. you couldn't even tell there were two drummers.

As much as i would have liked to see the Dirtbombs, the oddest thing there is two bass players along with the two drummers—lots of bottom there. should make you move…

Bands like the Dead and the Allman Bros. use two drummers well b/c each drummer plays slighly different stuff and compliments the other.

You know Bags, you couldn't see the Wrens drummer but the bass player pointed at you once you got on the bench…
Phil Collins is a good drummer, but he's immediately disqualfied b/c of his solo career…

Yes, it's true. And last night the cello player at Lyle Lovett kept looking at me and smiling when I "hand danced" (it was at the Warner, and folks stayed sitting). It was actually a little…too much.

But the Wrens "point out" was the best 'cuz it was so enthusiastic!

i love phil collins, but dont know if he was one of the top 5 drummers or not. su su sudio :)
I thought Ginger Baker was supposed to be the God of all drummers?

What about the dude from Pink Floyd?
neil peart of rush
john bonham of led zeppelin
keith moon of the who
dale crover of the melvins
josh freese of a perfect circle, vandals, etc. :)
The word "best" is such a difficult term to define and use. Maybe not the best of all time, but here's a few worth mentioning though:

Steve Shelley - Sonic Youth: the glue that binds it all together

Scott Churilla - Reverend Horton Heat: catch them live and see what I mean

D.J. Bonebrake - X

Matt Cameron - Soundgarden

Jimmy Chamberlin - Smashing Pumkins: just listen to Gish

Billy Conway - Twinemen/Morphine
Neil Peart, John Bohnham, blah blah blah. You guys take the magazines you read too seriously.
John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Charlie Watts, hell yes.
I second that vote for Earl Harvin, he's fantastic. He has worked with Seal a lot in the past, so I'm hoping he'll be in the house on 12/13.
Also
â?¢ Jean Paul Gaster of Clutch–way heavy but coming from a jazz direction, very unique style.
â?¢ Mac McNeilly [sp?], the first drummer for the Jesus Lizard always took my breath away.
â?¢ Dennis Chambers–this man has invisible limbs, what you hear is so much more than what you see him play.

Well, Rhett, Merle Haggard's not a drummer.

Martin Atkins. He has pounded the skins for many great bands including Ministry, PiL, Killing Joke, and Pigface. Just listen to PiL's Flowers of Romance, the drums carry the whole thing.
Are you going to come see Pigface on Thursday?

Where are they playing?

I almost bought a used Pigface "Fook" CD yesterday but decided againt it thinking they were charging too much for one in a busted up jewel case. Too many other wants too and too limited on funds. I know you know how that goes. If it would have been "Easy Listening", it would have been a harder choice for me.

They're playing at Nation on Thursday. The line up for Pigface is pretty sweet!

Guenter Schulz and En Esch formerly of KMFDM (now Slick Idiot)
Jared Louche - Chemlab
J.S. Clayton - Pitchshifter
Levi - uh what band hasn't he played for in the industrial genre!!

MELODY because she was the hottest cartoon I had ever seen in my early days.
Best drummer I've seen recently is a guy named Earl Harvin, who played with Richard Thompson at the club this summer.
yeah, he's definitely very good - also played with The The on their most recent album

also concur with the choice of Janet Weiss

I really like the drumming on Therapys first 2 EPs - I think his name was Fyfe but I also think he's left the band

David Narcizo of Throwing Muses is excellent in a very understated way

and Hector Munoz from Alejandro Escovedo's backing band really impressed me at Iota this year
Not listed my faves here because there are way too many to even remember but two good drummers that have impressed me this year are:

 • The guy in The Libertines - Not that I think the band is all that special but this guy really stood out to me when I saw them at the Black Cat.

 • Zak Starkey (Johnny Marr & The Healers) - He's not just the son of a very well known drummer.

Lately, I've been more impressed by drummer's who know how to hold back and just play good drums and know when to hit it hard and when not to. Too many of them are more interested in beating the shit out of their kit the entire set instead of adjusting to the various parts of the song. Both of these drummers understood the fine art of hitting their skins and varying their sound.

Special mention:

 • Nick Jago - Has nothing whatsoever to do with his drumming. :D

1) Bill Kuehn from Rainer Maria. He plays like an
adhd kid in hyperfocus mood. i've never ever
heard a song of his that wasn't SPOT ON. (and you know he's gotta be good if i put him before…

2) Janet Weiss of SK. Mos' def' (exclamation)! See Bagster's reason.

3) David Lovering in the Pixies

past that, i dunno.
Jean Paul Gaster - Clutch - Here's a guy who was influenced by Go-Go music, played jazz growing up and now plays drums in one of the best rock groups around.

Ted Parsons - Prong - I don't know if he still plays in a group anymore, but there was a time when he was one of the best metal drummers out there.

Dave Grohl - Nirvana, Tenacious D, Queens of the Stone Age - Need I say more? He brings a driving, relentless drum assault to whatever project he works on.

Don't know her name, but the girl who plays drums for Lenny Kravitz. She's one hell of a drummer and has attitude and style to spare.

Sean Kinney - Alice In Chains - Not too flashy and doesn't always try to add the over-the-top fill. Just a tight fit into the band who brought that extra something that made them sound great.

Currently he's the touring drummer for Killing Joke, I believe.
