There's a feel in the drumming on the Stone Roses and Loveless that's just awesome.

Hmm, picked up the touring skins for Grohl's album appearance. :D

Yeah, well I'm slow like that. But the same also goes for "Fave". You'll also notice I listed 6 drummers, not 5. I have a hard time counting too.

Today, coming home from a show in Philly, I was just thinking of "best drummers" as a new topic for the forum ("White Stripes" came on the radio, and I wondered what you guys thought of her…). List will on the way.

Fine choices (and mates with Airto in Micky Hart's Planet Drum). If one of the reasons to be on this board is expanding your musical horizons, and these names don't ring a bell, you have a treat in store checking them out. Besides Micky Hart, Airto has played with Santana, Paul Simon, Chicago, and Smashing Pumpkins as well as everybody who's anybody in Jazz. He rawks, besides doing that Worldbeat/Jazz thing.

I don't think you're nuts – at least not for holding that opinion.

Meg White is certainly no brilliant drummer. But is the measure of a good drummer the technical prowess that they hold? Or, is it how well the drummer fits the role they play in the band? If it's the latter (and I personally believe it is), then Meg White is a good drummer. Her ham-fisted, simplistic banging is the appropriate counterpoint for Jack's frenetic blues-punk guitar playing.

well what sealed the deal for me was the song Jimmy the Exploder, I won't forget because I remember how horrid it sounded at the show and went home and listened to the actual song, it starts with her playing a beat on the rim of the snare, it actually is a beat in the album version, live it was a bunch of random banging, I don't want live shows to sound exactly like the album, but actually a variation of the same song does not hurt, that being said, I have learned to like the albums again

They both suck. Meg's sloppy clunking fits well with Jack's inability to play his instrument.

Phil Levitt, Dada. A band whose prodigious talent, sound, songwriting prowess and (sadly)acclaim are all inversely proportional to those of the meg and jack noise show.

one that hasn't been mentioned so far: travis barker (blink 182, boxcar racer, the transplants). whether you like the bands or not, he's got skills. i spent the entire blink show just listening to him.

Of course you were listening to him, because the rest of the band sucks ass live. Honestly one of the worst live acts ever.

Alan Myers. I restate the original argument fave v. best, the best drummer ever being, of course, Pete Best.

The vid for Satisfaction, Myers-as-robot metronome. He moved so little, other than to play. No showboat twirling stick tactics. Purity of essence. Precision.

Lars (remember seeing them live years ago; while the band was doing their guitar and bass solos, he was behind the stage puffing from an oxygen tank to catch his breath…at least, i think it was an oxygen tank)

Neil Peart, I guess, at least that is what I used to think 15 years ago. I haven't listened to Rush much since.

I will second that Travis from Blink 182 is one of the best drummers around today. He has even admitted that being in Blink is keeping him back from his talents…that guy can play any style of music, from bossanova to salsa to blues to obviously punk. My hat goes off to him.

I never gave it much though actually, but you're right! I think Phil's drumming is over-shadowed by Mike's guitar work which is amazing!

I missed all 3 shows in Oct :(
