Top Five Fave Drummers

Note: Seeing there are some new members(fresh meat) afloat, it's heigh time for Señor Dµpek to trot out his tasteless bag of tricks, a la "dog & pony show"-style. So here it is:

Who are your top 5 favorite drummers?

Extra credit: Why are they your favorites? (Justify your love)
Dave Grohl. Why? His drumming electrified Queens of the Stone Age, and he was in Nirvana.

Janet Weiss. See Sleater-Kinney live, and you'll know why.

Brian Rosenworcel. It's not like Guster's my favorite band, but the guy plays with his hands! He makes the band, in my opinion.

John Bonham. You don't really need a reason, do you.

Four's all I can come up with.
The guy from the Bigger Lovers who played with the Pernice Brothers is quite good. Probably better than their normal drummer, who also drums for the Sadies.

I think we noticed some band whose drummer was better than the rest of the band, but can't remember who.

A lot of the best shows I've been to were by bands who didn't have drummers.
Danny Carey - (Tool) Just amazing especially when they do odd time.

Jean Paul Ganster - (Clutch) Just go see them live. It's all about the drummer! Reminds me a lot like John Bonham only tighter

John Bonham - (Led Zep) One of my main influences as a drummer when I was younger.

Neil Peart - (Rush) The Professor. Have you ever seen what his drum heads look like? Anyone that can play like him and have markings the size of quarters where his stick hits constantly deserves to be on anyone's list :)

Greg Bisonette (Studio drummer/Joe Satriani) - Anyone that can keep up with Satch on guitar and has put up playing with Dave Lee Roth has got to be a good guy right? ;)

I could list more but those are probably the top five followed with Keith Moon of The Who right in there too.

Neil Peart

John Bonham

Lars Ulrich (just shut up, he's good)

David Leach

Mickey Hart

not that i like all of these guys' bands, but they are amazing drummers nonetheless.
Keith Moon - The Who

Do we really need to justify this?
How about Jason Bohnam?
Best drummer I've seen recently is a guy named Earl Harvin, who played with Richard Thompson at the club this summer.
Faves:

Stewart Copeland
Bill Bruford
John Bonham
Dave Grohl
Neil Peart
The drummer for Lake Trout. See them live as this guy is amazing. He can do a convoluted techno rhythm live. Great dynamics, just wow.

The drummer for the Dust Devils album "Struggling electric and chemical". I think it is either someone named Reed or Gerald Crosley. On this album, the drums are powerful, complex, and fit the songs perfectly. They propel the songs forward.

Keith Moon. Insane drumming. He had speed and a great sloppy precision. Also famous for many non-drumming things such as hotel trashing, kit trashing, and just being trashed.

Bill Ward, Black Sabbath. Heavy drumming. Great beats, classic.

Martin Atkins. He has pounded the skins for many great bands including Ministry, PiL, Killing Joke, and Pigface. Just listen to PiL's Flowers of Romance, the drums carry the whole thing.

I would say John Bonham but I have heard his drumming more through the Beastie Boys than from Led Zepplin. I know they are concidered a great band, but I never got too into them.
one of them's gotta be the guy from Mates of State (Jason Hammel)…he is half the band, afterall…

Agreed about Lars, just cause he's a baby when it comes to Napster doesnt mean he isnt a great drummer.

janet weiss–as noted above, see them live and you'll understand. extra points for being in two awesome bands, neither of which has a bass player

?uestlove (the roots)–phenomenal live performer, although holds back on the studio offerings

grant hart (husker du)–the husker records really hit you over the head, and influenced many that followed. i always thought that hart's drumming gave them the edge over some of their contemporaries

damon che (don cabellero)–awesome at what he does, which is be completely nuts. also, one of the local heros growing up

murph (dinosaur jr/lemonheads)–mostly because of the abuse he took working for two big ole jerks. also, he was pretty cool partying with us in college. dinosaur jr is also an all-time fav.
In no particular order:

Keith Moon–did anyone really play drums any better? Watch videos him play and it looks like he's totally out of beat, and yet it worked. He did rhythms with one hand that some people can't do with two.

John Bonham–the king of the heavy metal beat.

Charlie Watts–I'm including him mainly b/c so many drummers site him as an influence. He is not flashy, but he never misses a beat and seems to be a great fundamental drummer. it's not all about flash, it's about keeping the beat.

Mickey Hart/Bill Kreutzman (of the Grateful Dead)—I'm cheating a little by putting them together, but the two of them do things and make sounds with the drums that few others else have done, at least in the rock and roll world.

Neal Peart–sometimes he sounds like two guys playing.

Honorable mention: Lars Ulrich (great talent), Dave Grohl (he basically plays one style, but does it well–could fill in for Bonham in Zeppelin ever reforms), Jon Fishman (from Phish–the guy can play any type of music thrown at him, he sounds like two people playing also), Tommy Lee (yeah, he's nuts and makes internet videos, but he nails the tubs), and the guys from Rusted Root (there's three of them and they each play different types of percussion, some only with their hands—wild stuff).

There's probably others I'm forgetting…

Bagster, you've got to come up with more than 4, you saw 4 drummers this week alone! ;-)
Stewart Copeland - his syncopations are unsurpassed, intricate beats

Mitch Mitchell - pure energy, plus who else could keep a drugged up Jimi focused?

Lars Urlich - have to agree with the whiney comment, but just listen to "One (Johnny Got His Gun)"

Ringo Starr - personality and charisma, he is a human metronome

Keith Moon - all over the kit, breaking every "rule" of playing drums- I also heard that he could keep an independent beat with each of his four limbs
drummers is for metal or hippies kids. do guitarist or albums or something to test us "new meat"
