I didn't see it until I was 4 as well, but it was after Close Encounters came out.  It was early 1978 and my folks took us all to the Drive-in thinking the kids would just sleep.  I was hooked.

I saw the next two on opening Day at Mann's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd with the Characters walking about.

I saw the next three at the Uptown on Conn Ave, front row balcony at the midnight showing because the staff used to come to the P's all the time and they hooked me up.
