What the f is wrong with the President?

Under what definition of "Liberal" does Obama not qualify?

You're getting nit-picky which does lead to a very accurate and detailed difference in the term. It also explains why so many people get so confused with the word.

I was taught that there are two types. Those from the John Locke school of thought which is the older Founding Fathers, truly 'liberal' form. You know, the pursuit of health, happiness and liberty providing it does not infringe on others.

Then it was 'adjusted' or 'expanded', let's say, to the John Stuart Mill form defined in your post above.

In some respects there are overlaps. In others, it places a Socialist expectation onto all regardless of choice. They both have their virtues and faults. The real problem sets in when any given person or group gets into power and exploits and/or abuses the system in some manner against the people. No such thing as a real utopia. No matter how much you try, it always ends up crumbling into a dystopia of some sort.

MKAY!!!

;D
Granted, I should've said "left wing" instead of "liberal" because that was how he was described by a few resident conservatives before the thread fell off the cliff into reptilian abyss but:
He has never come out in support of full abortion rights ("late-term abortions");
He has never come out in support of full gay equality (marriage);
And his healthcare plan is a sham that makes the insurance companies even richer.
Not to mention his very un-left wing foreign policy up to now.

Republicans have tried to tar Obama with the terms "leftist" and "socialist" to heighten the sense among the feeble-minded that he is something other than Presidential material.    But all Democratic presidents, including Jimmy Carter, have been center right, with Republicans just being further to the right.    Howard Dean, also painted as a lefty, in fact carries center-right views for the most part.

In fact, among Democratic candidates in recent years, the only one who probably really qualifies as left is Kucinich, and you see how far that gets him.  Fact is, most Americans don't care much for real lefty politicians, any more than they do for extreme right ones.  Either that or it's another conspiracy.
All completely true.

Actually, he's not even liberal in the Modern sense of the word! He's not taking from the rich and redistributing to the poor. Instead, he's stealing from everyone and giving to the already ultra super rich! That is not 'Socialism' of any form. At best, that's Fascist corporate welfare!

Also, to support your claims, Az:

He has not legalized or decriminalized marijuana. If anything, he's sent his goon squad after the somewhat legalized merchants and such. (Those grey areas really need to straightened out.)

He claimed he would get rid of the oppressive Patriot Act. Not only did he NOT get rid of it, he signed on to extend it and added to it to make it worse!

More wars!

Pretty much nothing about BP and the Gulf oil spill. (Many, many years ago, I use to believe that 'liberals' were big on going after big corporations about such corporate abuse and environmental disasters and corporate abuses. Either I was wrong back then or something has changed.)

He keeps letting the big banksters and other very large corporations rob from their employees and others while filtering all the money to the top CEOs, embezzlement style. You know, the stuff the Neo-Cons are often accused of (and often rightfully so). (Again, see BP above.)

Ultimately, there's really no difference between he and Bush which is why I often refer to Obama as Bush v 2.1 on steroids. He's just rachetted up all this mess to a whole new level! They both dance under the strings of the same puppet masters so it all makes perfect sense.

They keep going after small farms, the organic food industry and Amish farmers. Some states have already tried to take steps to prevent us, or require us to obtain a license, to have our own gardens! Some use the excuse that it's to prevent us from growing marijuana. What a load of crap! See, it's really the government in lock step with Big Agra to both destroy the 'competition' and gradually prevent us from being self-sufficient. That too is an aspect of Fascism.

I miss the old 60s hippy mentality. The good aspects where they were against wars, true equal rights for all, were into good clean healthy food and living off the land, against bogus business practices and abuses and were not afraid to call out their own when they effed up. For the most part, today's faux liberals are nothing of the sort! Too invested in the party line to recognize the difference. Not all, of course, but way to many have hit the wrong Kool-Aid bin and have lost their minds.

Weird Doom. We're both actually in agreement here.

Kucinich is one of the very, very few politicians that I actually like and would vote for.

If the Democratic Party were as pro-life and the Republican Party, they'd never lose an election.

Discuss.
