2012 albums

Fantastic band. I caught them at the 200 years show and almost left before they went on. Was happy I remained. Appreciate the heads up.

Horse Lords
By Horse Lords

"Horse Lords is the quartet of Andrew Bernstein, Max Eilbacher, Owen Gardner and Sam Haberman. The band transmutes experimental tactics (polyrhythm, arcane tunings and modular synthesis) into direct, muscular and surprisingly funky songs. The result is an ambitious sound with the volume, energy and density of great rock music but an expansive wanderlust that draws on a wider range of reference points. Using the just intonation tuning system favored by avant garde composers such as La Monte Young and James Tenney, the group's playing acknowledges the conservatory but just as freely draws upon krautrock, post-punk, Appalachian and African musical traditions. In order to be able to play in this tuning, Gardner hand-modified his guitar, adding and precisely repositioning frets, and the result is a truly distinctive guitar sound, both jarring and joyful. Elaborate but not self-indulgent, wide ranging but tightly executed, Horse Lords are at once trance inducing, ecstatic, and rhythmically compelling. "

'Pay what you want' MP3s along with 'pay for' physical media on the website.

The last album left me underwhelmed. Hopefully the new one is a return to form. Have you given a listen to any of the Dementia and Hope Trails stuff I linked in the 2011 Albums thread? It reminds me a good bit of the older Hammock material.

I think Az is booked tonight… he'll be at the 930 and then he's running a 4 minute mile to the Black Cat or something like that…
LOL
No need to dash. Mission of Burma are playing at 11.

so bob mould will play the entire new album and copper blue and be done at 1045…probably but you never know…
Both are pretty short. I am stressing more about how I am getting down there now than making the Burma show on time. These storms are throwing a monkey wrench in things.

Even worse for the bands. The storms may be hitting around load in unless their times are fairly early.
Curious as to whether you all were able to pull it off.
Almost. The Black Cat tweet claiming that MoB would hit stage at 11 was inaccurate. We missed the first two songs for sure. Maybe three. Still, they were at their best that I had seen so I can overlook walking in 10 minutes after they started.

Relaxer, check out Purity Ring if you havent already.  Their album "Shrines" is one of my favorite female vocalist driven ones of the year.  Excellent dark/witchy pop.

I am loving that album.

FINALLY listened to this. one of my favorite albums i've heard this year.
I'm really liking the Saint Etienne album quite a bit.
And can't lie, new Kanye is great.
Dino Jr. did not grab me immediately as the last two records did but it is a grower.
this is nice.  good combo of the orb with scratch perry . . . but i still am going through an over obsession with 'the dream' and 'bicycles/tricycles' albums.

The St. Vincent/David Byrne album is really good.  Just getting around to listening to it.

Also surprised by the new Cat Power.  Will never go to "see" her live ever again, but I do still enjoy her voice.
