Bloc Party

Still trying to get us to write your column for you, eh?
i dont think they really sound like Franz Ferdinand or the Killers.

and i dont think Franz Ferdinand sound like the Killers? why do people try to homogenize everything?
Funny, I heard more British influences like James or a even Cure sensibility (something in the lead singer's voice). American emo never crossed my mind even when seeing them live.

I'm w/ sonick and others…don't hear any of the aforementioned references.

im assuming it comes out before/around 3/22, but i'm not the judge of that.

i also think its incredibly legitimate to tie bloc party to other 80s influenced indie dance-rock bands right now … sure they don't sound spot on to franz or the killers, mainly because bloc party has a much more diverse sound than either of these two … but their "dance" tracks have a similar vibe, the main riff in "banquet" is very franz

and i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about "so here we are", but to my ears it sounds like an outtake from JEW's "Clarity" (which is a very different album from "Bleed American", for all you haters out there)
ok got a chance to hear "So We Are Here" and will have to say it could fit in on JEW's Clarity. The ringing guitars and frantic drumming do remind of some of that record. I do also hear the Cure & James in the vocals for this song.

For me there are moments on both Clarity and Bleed American which are great.

plus, i suppose thats what writers have to do is relate one band to as many others as possible.

you gotta spoon feed the people. plus, its easier to describe someone sound by saying "they sound like ___"

oh well.

the 3/22 US release date is correct. Using the verb in past tense I was questioning…sorry had to put on the editor cap…
No one said anything bad about Jimmy Eat World. Stick to what you think and hear - no need to justify…
why do people try to homogenize everything?

It's more than just listing similar sounding bands. I think it's quite clear that Bloc Party is part of this recent and quite prolific music trend of 2004/2005 towards the dance rock early 80s ilk.

i'll always write what i feel and this discussion i started wasn't to make myself feel justified, i simply enjoy hashing things out with people.

my thoughts on why one might disagree with me:

a) you haven't heard clarity
b) you're protective enough to keep the dreaded emo tag from a band you like
c) you're afraid that if you like the track, you too may like jimmy eat world

I'm working on a review of their LP, and I had a question for you guys … am I insane for hearing american emo influences throughout this? i'm not saying it's an emo clone or anything, but i hear plenty of jimmy eat world … especially on track 10 "So Here We Are", that song could have easily been on JEW's Clarity… track 7 "This Modern Love" is another jimmy eat world song …
i wouldn't say "throughout"…but i hear that "sound" pop up here and there. his singing style kinda reinforces it too at times.

i like the album. love the drums.

and track 7 reminds me of "we will become silhouettes"

d) you like South Park and that discredits everything else you say

e) sound-a-like band name dropping CD reviewers get on my nerves and probably just use it for a lack of a better descriptive word (note: franzy is not an adjective, and "like franz" isnt good descriptive either cause you'd have to assume everyone reading has heard them. and you know what assuming does….)

Nah. You somewhat stated your opinion in a question. Thus, I provided my opinion. I'm not second-guessing my answer. Anyhow, just read about them in a swanky mag at the bookstore. Funny, only one slight reference to another band "with Radiohead-written lyrics…"
The lead singer basically said most rock music these days is shite, needing to listen to Usher just for inspiration and diversity.

(d) beauty is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder. I like some of Jimmy eat world's songs and I'm not afraid to tell you that because you are no more "expert" about contemporary music than I am.

BTW: I haven't heard you name one group you like independent of a few long-term board favs.

Yes, initially it was stated in the form of a question. Then I heard that one song a few more times (and it really is just one or two songs on the album, the rest of it sounds nothing like JEW) and realized the comparison to the vibe on "clarity" was dead on … it's not a subjective response, it's a fairly objective listing of the song's qualities and how they match another song's qualities.

"Radiohead-written lyrics"? huh? does that mean thom yorke writes their songs?

by the way, I really like bloc party and their album.

suki, you make me laugh.

yet again you just come a bit short of understanding what i'm saying.

i like pre-2001 jimmy eat world a lot, specifically their album "clarity" … i'm not sure where you assumed that i didn't like them … there are a few songs on "bleed american" and "futures" that i like as well, but not as much as their earlier stuff.

just a quick tour of my ever-evolving 5 star playlist:

2PAC
AC Newman
Against Me
Allman Bros
Apples in Stereo
Beach Boys
Beatles
Belle & Sebastian
Beulah
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Blondie
Bob Dylan
Brendan Benson
British Sea Power
Broken Social Scene
Buffalo Tom
The Clash
Creedence
The Cure

is that ok for now? i can go through D-F if you really want.

what does this mean exactly? why would "(d) beauty is the the eye (or ear) of the beholder" be a reason to disagree that a bloc party song sounds like a jimmy eat world album?
Three posts in a row. You're talking to yourself now.
i am not sure that because ONE song on the whole album sounds like some other band you've heard, doesnt really mean you need to compare the two.

hmmm. i can picture if now.

hoya: "oh my this sounds like that JEW song, oh wow, what a band reference, I'll put that in the article!!! woohoo, not only am i hip, but i'm a hip journalist…and i went to georgetown…ooh, I'll go call my girlfriend and take her to the interpol show!"
