Bloc Party

Tonight I am going back to Bottom of the Hill for New Model Army, passing on seeing Bloc Party two nights in a row. I don't like the "All tickets at the Door" thing on a Thursday night when there's basketball on, so I opted for seeing them at Bottom of the Hill where I was guaranteed a ticket if I purchased in advance.

Popscene is still on Ritch and Bloc Party went there last night after their show to spin some tunes. I am going to Popscene on Monday to see Death From Above 1979.

call me a little slow, or a lot slower after my day today, but im guessing popscene now has bands playing full sets. it seems that it used to be the place to be *after* the show. i remember the dandy warhols had went there, gene, blur, etc. but it was always after the show. but maybe thats what you're saying, and im slow :) is thursday night still the offical popscene night (ie brit-pop, indie)? alas, ive not been there since late 90s when i was living there, so im sure things change. glad to hear its still on ritch..was getting too popular/crowded for my blood. should have made it 21+! enjoy the shows! im insanely jealous i gave all that up.

btw, whose the dj now on thursday nights? i cant remember the guy's name who used to be there, but he was pretty cool. i went way too often!

cheers! -r

Thursday night at 10 is still the official pop scene night, but they've branched out a bit and sponsor shows as Popscene in different venues (for example the Kings of Leon are warming up for their U2 gig with a show at Great American Music Hall on the Friday before - this is being billed as a special Popscene night).

The sets are full sets, but each band has like one album out, so it's not longer than an hour. Late night, yes, the rockers still come by.

As far as the DJ's, I haven't the foggiest idea as I don't usually do clubs unless there is live music - I'm usually just there for the bands. There was some buzz last night about Sunday's gig with Graham Coxon and 22-20's having the orignal Popscene DJ's - Aaron, Omar, Jeremy and Eric Shea - for a 9 Year Anniversary. As I've only been here about 2 years, that meant nothing to me, but maybe it means something to you.

Are they still playing? I just read yesterday that their drummer had to have emergency surgery. Maybe they will have a replacement drummer.

do you go to shows that will probably sell out everytime you go out?
in DC you never know. I have never once gotten tickets to a Black Cat show on the night of the event. partially cause i dont go during the week, cause i wont be home til after 1am. weekend shows almost always sell out….

also, I have been to the 930 club one too many times to see a show and its sold out at the door.

you never know with DC. Baltimore, almost nothing sells out. plus i can stop by the venue.
Sonick, you are trying to explain all this to those who won't even, or rarely, venture up to a show in Baltimore solely because of the drive, let alone any other additional pains. Shit, they complain even if a band once in a Blue Moon decides to play Baltimore and skips DC.

what in the hell does that have to do with a $3 service charge to insure you get in to a show you really want to go to

Read Sonick's post of his reasons for not going.

very true. maybe they dont realize that the drive from Baltimore to DC is the same distance as it is from DC to Baltimore.
I thought you said it was a $3 service charge. Where are you getting $6 from? Are you including the gas money rountrip? Probably more than $3 for that.

look, $12 tickets cost me like $40 after ticketmaster.
Did you verify that, or are you just assuming the charges were outrageous? Black Cat tickets via TM's website usually have a $3 convenience charge per ticket. Usually, it's will-call only and no delivery fee. $3 is hardly a huge price to pay for something that will probably sell out in advance. That's less than the cost of a single beer.
apparently i need one of those nice DC jobs so i wont have to worry about an extra $6 everytime i wanna go out……

i am trying to explain it nice and slow for you (but thats hard on the internet).

$3 service charge times 2 (cause i buy my girfriends ticket, aparently thats not common practice in DC), thats $6 every time i go out. the drinks are more expensive, the drive, the crowd at the Black cat alone is enough to make me think 6 times before going. add that to the fact that i didnt actually know it was only $3 (normally its more than $3 for other venues, *cough930cough*)

add to that, my severe loathing for ticketmaster.com (i have used them twice in the last year)

if a show is $15 a ticket in DC , i can plan on spending $45 or so, and thats before drinks.

but i dont expect you to understand. a) you're from DC, b) you dont want to…….

i know i have said this like 5 times on this thread alone. 3 for me 3 for my girlfriend.

is it totally wierd that i buy her ticket too? dont most guys pay for thier GF's ticket? as least most of the time?????
I can't comment for most guys, only for myself. I think every girlfriend I had in DC before my wife made more money than me, so we usually went Dutch. I make slightly more than my wife, and we have typically gone Dutch. If I made a lot more than a signficant other, then sure, I'd do most of the paying.

That being said, I am paying for both NASCAR tickets this year.

i didnt know it was a salary thing. i just thought it was chivalry or whatever….stupid canadians.
I thought the chivalry thing ended with feminism and gender equality.

If you made the same amount of money as your girlfriend, yet you paid for everything, what would she be spending her earnings on?

hmmm, good question!!!! haha. she makes more than me actually. (by about $1300 a year). she has lots of student loans though. and plus, most of the shows we go to are bands i like. if it was up to her to get tickets, we'd never make it ANY shows (not that i am that good at it obviously!)
If it were up to my wife, we'd be home every night drinking expensive wine watching reality television. ;)

Good thing seeing one redneck band a month costs next to nothing anyway.

I guess I should pay her back for putting up with my band choices by giving more massages.

The shows are almost always my choice, she's more of a dinner and movies person.

i guess we're more alike than either of us would like to think!

wine and massages vs. shows, sounds like my life!

let me explain something nice and slow to you, you have been talking about bloc party on this board probably longer than anybody else, or close to it, you probably wanted to really go see it, you could have spent $6 on those shows you really really want to see and you would be going, $6 more than if you had been able to go to the box office, I dont advocate paying the $6 every time, just on those occasionas you really want to see it

hell, in my case if I dont get the tickets I want these days, I dont really care
With the gas money on top of it, would have been another $8.

Though his Baltimore rent is probably half what your DC rent is.
