Daltry would be proud

As for you Rhett, stick to rhett. We will continue to listen to GBV. Not trying to take a shot, but Mr Old 97 couldn't even come close to writing a song like Mr. Pollard. It is not his fault though, some have it, and some don't
wow marchdoe, you should come to one of my family weddings, my dad and uncles all look like Bob dancing. You would probably be in heaven.

From what I have heard, Rhett Miller releases fewer songs than GBV, that makes them of an overall higher average quality.
So is he Terence or Phillip?
hahahahaha that is the funniest thing I've heard all day hahahahaha

ok lets compare

Our Love

Richard Wagner's letters to his lover Mathilde were a mess
He should have quit before he had written the address
They made love on the mezzanine her husband was his friend
Vienna in a fugue-state working on a thing
That when he finished it took almost seven hours to sing
He still found time to write to her his heart-exploding words
Our love surpassed our love so fast
Our love's all wrong our love goes on and on
Our love became our love by name when I wrote it to you in a song
Our love goes on and on
Our love our love
Kafka in his letters to his lover Milena was alive
But he was waiting for a love that never would arrive
Their rendezvous was singular her husband was his friend
She is a living fire she is a reason to live
She is killing me burning only for him
I'll spend my whole life loving her my heart exploding words
Our love surpassed our love so fast
Our love's all wrong our love goes on and on
Our love became our love by name when I wrote it to you in a song
Our love goes on and on
Our love our love our love our love
Our love surpassed our love so fast
Our love's all wrong our love goes on and on
Our love became our love by name when I wrote it to you in a song
Our love goes on and on our love our love
Our love our love our love our love our love

Now Bob

The Brides Have Hit Glass

I don't come around
Never call or let her know
I got a life of my own
You know I hate to be around her
When she's like that
I wrote a song once about her
Called "The Brides Have Hit Glass"
You know it just won't last
To be on top of your own world
With no guardrails to cling to
You fall so very fast
It's very odd to find her up again
Staking out expansion
Seeking new exposure

And when she holds out an empty glass
And she comes for a handout
I ask for the same thing-it's sad
And I hold on so sure I can take all she can
Just to be around her
Just to feel bad

One day I will know
That's it's a waste of time
And there's a better road ahead of me
I just don't know how to make it there
So I'll just hang around and take my chance
Once again I'll roll the dice
And try to hang on to my shrinking paradise

And I'll hold out an empty glass
And I'll come for a handout
And I'll ask for the same thing-it's sad
And I'll hold on so confident
That's it all I can give
To try to find my way back
Just to hit glass

After looking at the comparison myself, i have realized it is unfair to compare them. Rhett sings of common, everyday things, doesn't really leave much to the imagination. While Bob uses wordplay, comes up with new words himself, or new ways of phrasing words. Each song can have a different meaning for each person. More so than that of what Rhett brings to the table.

So if you don't want to think and you want a catchy hooky pop song - turn to rhett

If you want to challenge yourself and try to delve into what the song really means to you - I would say go with Bob

After all which one has been compared to Lennon and McCartney?
I prefer songs that are lyrically and musically straightforward. If I want to ponder issues, I prefer to ponder my own personal issues, not those of some drunk self-absorbed rock star wannabee.

I'll take Rhett's clever wordpaly and catchy tunes anyday…

Try this one on

Doreen

(Hitchhike to Rhome lyrics.
Minor variations found on Wreck Your Life.)
When I first met Doreen
She was barely seventeen.
She was drinking whiskey sours in the bar.

The way she tossed 'em back
I would've had a heart attack.
But as it is I let her drive my car.

We galloped through the boroughs
Like a pair of horny thoroughbreds,
Until I said, "Stop the car, Doreen."

Well you can roll your eyes and nod
But I swear that I saw God,
In the moonlight on a side street in the wreckage we call Queens.

Doreen, Doreen, Last night I had an awful dream.
You were laying in the arms of a man I'd never seen.
Come clean Doreen. Come clean Doreen.

Well I'm pulling into Cleveland
In a seven-seater tour van.
There's eight of us, so I'm sleeping on the floor.

The guy that plays the banjo
Keeps on handing me the Old Crow,
Which multiplies my sorrow, I can't take it anymore.

Doreen, Doreen, last night I had an awful dream.
You were laying in the arms of a man I'd never seen.
Come clean Doreen. Come clean Doreen.

Now I'm begging and I'm pleading,
"Well pull over guys, I'm bleeding.
There's a Fina off the highway with a phone."

I'm calling you Doreen,
But it rings and rings and rings.
Where is it that you are, if you aren't in our bed at home.

Doreen, Doreen, last night I had an awful dream.
You were laying in the arms of a man I'd never seen.
Come clean Doreen. Come clean Doreen.
hey, I know a song written just about you marchdoe……

There was a half a harvest moon up on the hillside
Our love is made almost entirely of downside
Who would have thought it could feel so much better then?
Now there's a half a million things I wanna tell you
They tap the phone line and the speaker at the drive thru
Who would have thought it could feel so much different then?

Downtown, so weak
Let the idiot speak
Let the idiot speak
Let the idiot speak

Now there's strange way and awkward feelings
I'm bouncing off the wall, I'm talking to the ceilings
Who would have thought it could feel so bad sometimes?
Now there's a half a million reasons we can argue
You're right in front of me now and there's no one to talk to
Who would have thought it could feel so bad sometimes?

Downtown, so weak
Let the idiot speak
Let the idiot speak
Let the idiot speak
Let the idiot speak
Let the idiot speak
Let the idiot speak

(Solo)

Downtown, so weak
Let the idiot speak (Let the idiot speak)
Let the idiot speak (Let the idiot speak)
Let the idiot speak
Let the idiot speak (Let the idiot speak)
Let the idiot speak (Let the idiot speak)
Let the idiot speak
Let the idiot speak (Let the idiot speak)
Let the idiot speak (Let the idiot speak)
Let the idiot

Spend 3 bucks and watch "watch me jumpstart"

Bob isn't some self-absorbed rock star, he is just a guy that has a dream. How American of him. How many "rock stars" would have signed autographs in a down poor. How many rock stars get you in on the guest list for their next show just because you mentioned a pizza joint in Dayton that you use to go to. You don't have to like GBV, just understand them. Just 5 average guys (well use to be, lineup has changed over the years) that had a dream, happened to know some instruments, and had a boombox to record on, so they chased it. Also Bob and the boys help out the indie scene a lot. Look at who they have toured with over the years to get them noticed. The Strokes wounldn't have been signed if it were not for Albert throwing their demo on the stage when GBV was playing in NYC. Pete Yorn, another example. My Morning Jacket, Creeper Lagoon, the Black Keys. All these bands toured with GBV way before you started talking about them and how Rhett Miller is so much better.

I think Rhett is great, however I don't slam other peoples favorite bands, nor do I try to make you listen to what I listen to.

When it comes to Bob I think Lou Reed said it best

Hardly…..

Hey hey, glad girls only want to get you high
And they're alright

There will be no coronation
There will be no flowers flowing in the light
That passes though me now
In the light that passes through me

Hey hey, glad girls only want to get you high
And they're alright

There will be no graduation
There will be no trumpets blowing in the light
That passes through me now
In the light that passes through me

With the sinking of the sun I've come to greet you
Clean your hands and go to sleep
Confess the dreams
Of good and bad men all around
Some are lost and some have found
The light that passes though me now
Yeah the light that passes through me

Hey hey, glad girls…

and if GBV ir responsible for all those shite derivitive acts you listed, well that is just another reason to hate GBV.
Why is it that he's gone through so many band members?
I believe Reed said Diamonds not Gold
missed my point my man,

self loathing rock stars don't try and help out their music community.

do you really want to say that??? those bands maybe shite, but do you blame/hate the beatles for all the shite derivitive bands that followed them?

btw, the wallflower still won't tell me where he stayed last weekend, so it's up to you and your wily charms to get it out of him.
I wasn't aware I slammed GBV anywhere. I did slam Ohio, but so what? I actually said I thought they were pretty decent musically. His voice is pretty average, but then again so are many modern rock singers. Lyrically, I coudn't understand a word he sang, so I've no real opinion there.

You're the one who brought another artist into the conversation…

Perhaps because he's a bit self-absorbed?

Well the Beatles didnt help them directly very often, a few songs for Peter and Gordon here, a few odd crap acts signed to apple there.

Can we hate them for Wings?

As for Wallflower I thought you said my willy ways……

Are you talking to yourself?
Bob = Guided by Voices

The other guys come from something called the Monument Club. Group of guys that get together every week. Drink beer (sorry Rhett) and talk about music. If you have seen Some Drinking Implied you have seen the monument club.

As for the mis quote, sorry, it was off the top of my head.

Namechecking Wagner and Kafka is lyrically straightforward?

Sounds like pretentious dilletantism to me….
What's so pretentious about Kafka? He was junior high required reading in my public school…

Using words like dilletantism is more pretentious than namechecking Kafka or Wagner.
