my dad's going to be stoked, he always gets pissed when the pens don't have a good offensive defenseman. heard kovalev, straka, forsberg, naslund and rafalski as possible signings. gonchar is bad ass, though
the Penguins are STILL gonna suck

just for the record, the rumors i listed have been since like the lockout began, not just today

this would have been great if it was around 5 years ago
Pens are going to be very tough…with all due repect to the naysaying Sonick.
I'd like to see them still sign another proven goalie & get Malkin in camp & they then should be able to compete with anyone - they've got an abundance of good young players.
If only Fleury was ready. It would then be Lord Stanley's ball @ the Civic Arena.

and i think Boston got Leetch.
Leetch vs. Gonchar
i may have to sit and think on this one.

I'm surprised about the Kovy signing.
Talk around here was that it was nearly a done deal (him coming back to Pitt).

i haven't been following this thread, or any of the nhl signings really, until i just saw that my former favorite player, sergei gonchar, just signed with THE FUCKING PENGUINS. that's disgusting. i will have to perform some sort of cremation service for my #55 caps jersey.
hey bede … podsednik … come on! i'm being very reasonable! dude's not even playing!

I don't think Toronto has signed anyone. They'll probably be the oldest team in history again this year.

I guess the Caps strategy of "if you can't beat them - try to be just like them" didn't work out.
Pens also rumoured to be close to signing either Sean Burke or Cujo in goal.
And Forsberg signs with Flyers

fact away my friend. how are the Caps trying to be the Penguins and the bigger question is, why?
Why?
Since 1991 the Pens have beaten the Caps SIX times in playoff series - 2 times on their way to Stanley Cup championships.
These series wins have often occurred in stunning & heartbreaking fashion:
*Twice coming back from down 1 game to 3
*Once overcoming a 0-2 mark
*2 over-time wins during that span including the epic 6 1/2 hr game & the series ending Gonchar cough up.
The Pens have been the hurdle the Caps have been unable to overcome in their own quest to win a Cup. Losing to Pitt is almost ritualistic.
How?
So if you can't beat - join 'em or at least try to duplicate what is working for them.
from Pro Ice Hockey:
"Plenty of NHL franchises spend more stupidly and recklessly than the Capitals. But the current Washington team is defined by one fat, regrettable contract. In July of 2001, Jaromir Jagr was scooped up from the Penguins and handed a seven-year, $77-million deal. A year after Jagr arrived, Robert Lang was signed (also from the Penguins.)
The team envisioned them filling nets and seats, and spoke confidently of a â??three-year planâ? to win the Stanley Cup.
Like many such plans, this one has been abandoned early. The Capitals win more than they lose, but are renowned for their uninspired play…and the quest for glory has been usurped by a campaign to get the payroll under control."
