The 2009 Albums Thread

new Franz Ferdinand is out and about. I've listened to it twice and… I'll probably dig it more as I get more familiar with it, but it lacks that immediate punch that the debut had. I swear, I had their first album in the car for like six months, and never got tired of it. I even though the 2nd one was damn good, with a great lead-off single in Do You Wanna.

The new one dials back the guitars and adds more of the dance thumpa-thumpa. Several times I thought it just sounded like Hot Chip with sassier vocals, and that made me very sad. But I'm kind of wanting to hear it again, which is the mark of an album that I'll eventually get into. It's just a little disappointing to hear them moving closer to dance pop and away from the itchy guitar rock.
I've listened to it a couple of times, and it's going in the trashcan. I'll stick with the first two.

New Vetiver is interwebbing. Haven't heard it yet.
everyone's favourite band Placebo are having a new album out in June.

New Tortoise in April.
"Happy New Year! Drag City welcomes to the stable the dynamic duo known as Magik Markers! Their bone-splitting live shows have long been a favorite of ours, so finally we got off our bed-sores and cart-wheeled sweatily towards an arranged marriage of sorts with these freaky kids. Fortunately, they weren?t scared by our show of enthusiasm, just amused ? and as inspired as ever. Their incredible new record, Balf Quarry, is the answer to a lot of unasked questions out there, an answer that's going to unsettle a bunch of you. And naturally, the rest of you lot are gonna laugh like hyenas. But since it's all about the (fucked up) music, who cares? How to care? And what's up? Get into the new Magik Markers in May to wonder these questions with adequate justification."

Not a new album per se, but I'm noticing that the remastered version of Loveless is floating about the wires. Anyone heard it yet? Is it a marked improvement over the old one?

Have pretty much given up on the Animal Collective album as it's just not my bag. I need songs, tunes, hooks, and this has almost none. There are a few nice flourishes here and there, but it just seems like an exercise and a chore to listen to.

Interestingly, after verbally damning MPP and tearing it from the deck, I popped in Franz's new one and this one is getting better and better. Good punchy power pop with a sassy kick is just what I'm looking for right now.
"The Soundtrack Of Our Lives to release 24-track double album. Swedish rock force The Soundtrack of Our Lives will release new studio album Communion on March 3rd, 2009." per Yep Roc news. (they signed to them)
(I've never really listened to them and didn't find any mention of them via the search tool…just thought this may be newsworthy to some…)
i'm really enjoying A.C. Newman's "Get Guilty" … he needs to be "in the conversation" for best pop/rock songwriter of the 00's

This new William Elliott Whitmore album is all sorts of excellent.
Scott "Wino" Weinrich's new solo album is out. It fucking rocks. You can listen to the whole CD on myspace. Sounds a bit like the Hidden Hand.

It does indeed rock.

I beat you to posting that a few pages ago. :)

Well, not the myspace part but the part about him having a new album out.
