Punk rocker caught in soap opera
The drummer is jailed in O.C. because his bottle of cleanser allegedly contained a drug. The manufacturer joins the fight.

Was a legendary punk rocker arrested for possession of â?¦ soap?

That's the question surrounding last week's jailing of Germs drummer Don Bolles after a traffic stop in Newport Beach.

Bolles, 50, whose real name is Jimmy Michael Giorsetti, said in an interview that he and his girlfriend were driving to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting Wednesday evening when police pulled over his 1968 Dodge van for a broken taillight.

Inside the vehicle, police found a toiletry kit containing denture glue, razors and a bottle of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap.

When a field test of the alleged liquid peppermint soap indicated it was GHB, a date-rape drug, Bolles was arrested on suspicion of felony narcotics possession, said Sgt. Evan Sailor of the Newport Beach Police Department.

Bolles insisted the soap was only soap. "I've been using Dr. Bronner's for 35 years," he said Tuesday, adding that the organic ingredients help give him the complexion of a 15-year-old girl.

Executives at Dr. Bronner's rushed to Bolles' defense, hiring attorney Bruce Margolin, who specializes in marijuana cases, to represent the musician.

The alliance between Germs and the soap manufacturer followed an Internet plea to help bail Bolles out of jail. A musician from one of his other bands, Fancy Space People, set up a PayPal account to raise the $2,500 bond.

Bolles, who lives in Huntington Park, was released Sunday. "The Newport Beach jail was the nicest one I've ever been in," he said. But Bolles spent just one night there before being moved to two county jails he described as "terrifying."

The Germs, a trailblazing punk ban formed in Los Angeles in the late 1970s, are credited with influencing generations of musicians and popularizing mohawks. Bolles took his name from Arizona Republic journalist Don Bolles, who was killed in 1976 by a car bomb while investigating corruption.

The band broke up in 1980 after their 24-year-old singer, Darby Crash, committed suicide. The Germs reunited in 2005.

As word of the punk rocker's arrest spread online, Dr. Bronner's switchboard lighted up with calls. After speaking with Bolles on Monday, company President David Bronner decided to intervene.

The Escondido-based soap maker is used to run-ins with the law. Because the ingredient list for Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap includes hemp oil, police field tests of the soap occasionally indicate THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, Bronner said.

But the idea of finding GHB in a Dr. Bronner's product is "beyond belief," Bronner said. "The field test must have been flawed or tampered with."

Is it possible Bolles was using the soap bottle to carry the drug?

No way, Bronner said. With a definitive test of the bottle's contents coming soon from the Orange County Crime Lab, "it would be ridiculous for Bolles to be lying," Bronner said.

Bolles, a onetime heroin addict who is scheduled to play a London concert with the Germs in August, likewise dismissed the idea that he would carry GHB. "A date-rape drug is the last thing I need," he said. "If anything, I need a way to keep the girls off of me. They make my girlfriend mad."

Hilarious…I love Don Bolles. He signed a guitar neck that Pat Smear smashed as "Kurt Crash". He's a nut.
Bolles Is Clean via Pollstar

The Clean Germ
Updated 04:22 PDT Sat, Apr 21 2007

Recent charges brought against drummer Don Bolles of The Germs for carrying what police determined was drug-spiked liquid soap didn't hold water.

Bolles (real name: Jimmy Michael Giorsetti) was pulled over on a traffic stop in Newport Beach April 4th and subsequently searched. Police found a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle, which Bolles is apparently allowed to possess for medical reasons.

But the real trouble started when police came across a bottle of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps of Escondido. They conducted a field test on the soap, which tested positive for GHB, commonly known as the date rape drug.

Bolles was arrested and charged with felony drug possession. There was one problem: The soap was clean.

When confirmation tests on the magic soap were conducted in the Orange County crime lab, police found that it didn't contain GHB after all.

Representatives from Dr. Bronner's, who took up Bolles' case after hearing about the test results, purchased the same field tests used by police and conducted their own tests on the liquid, according to a statement.

The results proved shocking. "We confirmed that the test is useless when used on soap since every test came back positive. We also tested other common brands of soap including Johnson & Johnson's popular Neutrogena brand, as well as Colgate-Palmolive's Tom's of Maine brand, which gave the same false positive tests as well," the statement said.

Newport Beach police Sgt. Evan Sailor told the San Diego Union Tribune previous field tests always proved reliable.

"We've never had a false positive," Sailor said. "This is the first one."

Orange County DA spokeswoman Farrah Emami told the paper the charges have been dropped.

"Based on the results of the crime lab test, we have dismissed the case," Emami said.

The Germs broke up in 1980 after iconic frontman Darby Crash died from a drug overdose. The band, including former Nirvana and Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear, reunited two years ago.

JAIPUR, India (Reuters) – An Indian court ordered the arrest of Hollywood star Richard Gere on Thursday for kissing Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty at an AIDS awareness event this month saying it was an obscene act committed in public.

Gere's repeated kisses on Shetty's cheeks at an event to promote AIDS awareness in New Delhi sparked protests in some parts of India, mostly by Hindu vigilante groups, who saw it as an outrage against her modesty and an affront to Indian culture.

The order by a court in the northern city of Jaipur came in response to a complaint by a local lawyer.

The judge watched a video recording of Gere kissing Shetty and found him guilty of violating Indian laws against public obscenity, the lawyer, Poonam Chand Bhandari, said.

The court also summoned Shilpa Shetty to appear on May 5, Bhandari said, adding that Gere was also ordered to be arrested.

Gere can be sent to jail for up to three months or fined or both for the crime if he is arrested. He is not in India now but can be held if he visits the country again.

The Hollywood star is a devout Buddhist and a vocal supporter of the Tibetan cause and visits India frequently to meet the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in northern India.

He is also involved with charities looking after HIV-infected people and orphans, as well as AIDS prevention groups in the country.

Groups of men had burned and kicked straw effigies of Gere and Shetty in sporadic protests across the country after newspapers published the picture of the kiss on their front pages and TV channels aired visuals of the event.

Shetty, the winner of the "Celebrity Big Brother" reality TV show in Britain this year had said the kiss may have gone a "little overboard" but it was not obscene and the protests made India look regressive.

She said Gere was only re-enacting his moves from the film "Shall We Dance" to entertain the audience at the AIDS event and communicate in a Bollywood style as he did not speak Hindi.

Many commentators had subsequently expressed their unhappiness at what they said were fringe groups making a mountain of a harmless peck on the cheek.
She should have presented him with a live gerbil after the grope.

Rapper Arrested on Charge of Driving While Intoxicated
By ANAHAD Oâ??CONNOR
The rapper Busta Rhymes was arrested early this morning and charged with driving while intoxicated after officers stopped his car in Manhattan and smelled alcohol on his breath, the police said.

The rapper, whose real name is Trevor Smith, was pulled over about 12:48 a.m. near the corner of West 51st Street and 11th Avenue because the tint on his 2006 Yukon Denali was too dark, the police said. When officers approached his car and asked for his paperwork, Mr. Smith reached over and dropped his wallet, at which point â??he was found to have a strong odor of alcohol on his breath,â? according to the police report.

He was taken into custody and is being held until his arraignment, which is expected to take place later this afternoon. His lawyer, Scott Leemon, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

The drunken driving arrest is the latest of several legal troubles for the rapper. In January, he was charged with misdemeanor assault after his former driver said Mr. Smith beat and kicked him in a dispute over money. In an earlier case, in August 2006, Mr. Smith was accused of attacking a fan after a concert on Randalls Island and arrested on assault and weapons charges.

Mr. Smith had agreed to a plea offer that included probation, community service and lectures to troubled youths. But a judge withdrew the offer after Mr. Smith was arrested a third time, in February, and charged with driving in New York with a suspended license.

He was scheduled to go to trial on the assault charges this month.

Mr. Smith has also faced public criticism from top police officials, who say he has refused to cooperate with the investigation into the fatal shooting of one of his own security guards outside a recording studio in Brooklyn in February 2006.

According to the police, Mr. Smith will not tell investigators what he knows about the killing of the bodyguard, Israel Ramirez, even though he was standing next to Mr. Ramirez when he was fatally shot. A deputy police commissioner, Paul J. Browne, has said that Mr. Smithâ??s refusal to cooperate has prevented other witnesses from coming forward and cooperating as well. The case remains unsolved.
Shocking.

Report: Pete Doherty arrested again

LONDON - Pete Doherty was arrested this weekend on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs, a published report said Monday.

Metropolitan Police declined to directly confirm the report in The Sun newspaper, but said a 28-year-old man was arrested Saturday night in London on suspicion of drug possession. He was released on bail pending investigation and was ordered to return to a police station next month.

Doherty, frontman for Babyshambles and formerly co-leader of The Libertines, has been undergoing drug rehabilitation under court supervision following a number of arrests for possession of drugs, including cocaine and heroin.

At a court appearance April 18, the rocker said people close to him were insisting that he kick his addiction.

"The people I'm closest to have had enough. They've said it's drugs or them," he said.

Lindsay Lohan suspected of DUI after crash

BEVERLY HILLS, California (AP) – Lindsay Lohan was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Saturday after her convertible struck a curb, and investigators found what they suspect is cocaine at the scene, police said.

Lohan, 20, and two other people were in her 2005 Mercedes SL-65 when it crashed on Sunset Boulevard around 5:30 a.m., Sgt. Mike Foxen said. It appeared Lohan was speeding, Lt. Mitch McCann said at an afternoon news conference.

Officers at the scene found a "usable amount" of a drug tentatively identified as cocaine, McCann said. He declined to say where the drug was found other than to say Lohan was not carrying it.

Lohan, who spent time at a rehabilitation center earlier this year, was driven in another car to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, McCann said. The two other people in her car were not hurt.

Officers received a 911 call about the accident and arrested Lohan at the hospital for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, McCann said.

She was released from custody because she was admitted to the hospital, police said.

Lohan will have to appear in court to answer the citation, first reported on the Web site of X17 Inc., a celebrity photo agency.

The crash was Lohan's third accident in about two years. In October 2005, Lohan and a passenger suffered minor injuries when her convertible hit a van in West Hollywood. Authorities said the van driver, who also received minor injuries, was at fault.

Months earlier, Lohan collided with a minivan when she made a U-turn as the van, carrying paparazzi, followed her from a Los Angeles restaurant. A photographer was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon, but prosecutors declined to charge him.

That crash was credited with prompting Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign a law that set steep financial penalties for paparazzi who commit assaults while trying to obtain celebrity photos.

Lohan publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnik did not immediately return an e-mail requesting comment.

Lohan said in January that she had checked into a rehabilitation center for substance abuse treatment. Her publicist confirmed in December that the actress was attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Lohan told Allure magazine during an interview for its May issue that she decided to enter the secluded Wonderland Center at the suggestion of her therapist.

"It's so weird that I went to rehab. I always said I would die before I went to rehab," Lohan told the publication.

Lohan's latest movie, "Georgia Rule," is in theaters now. The actress's other screen credits include "Mean Girls," "Bobby," "A Prairie Home Companion" and "Freaky Friday."

Doherty, 28, has admitted possessing crack cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ketamine, as well as to two driving offenses.

Doherty, best known as on-off boyfriend of model Kate Moss, has been undergoing drug treatment under court order because of previous convictions.

Rapper Arrested At Miami Strip Club
Police Respond To Fight, Find Rapper Disorderly, Drunk

MIAMI – Rapper Trick Daddy was arrested after a fight at a strip club early Tuesday, authorities said.

The rapper, whose real name is Maurice Young, was charged with disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest, according to the police report.

Authorities responded to a fight at Tootsie's Cabaret just after 1 a.m. and found Young, who smelled of alcohol, cursing and "threatening staff at the club," the report said. Police repeatedly asked Young to leave the club, but he refused.

When they tried to handcuff him, he also refused and started moving his arms around, according to the report.

He was taken to a hospital where he was treated for injuries from the fight and later transported to Miami-Dade County jail. The rapper's mug shot shows a bloody nose and cheek.

He bonded out for $1,500, a jail spokeswoman said.

It was not immediately known if Young had legal representation.

A Miami native, Trick Daddy's albums include "Thug Matrimony: Married to the Streets" and "Back by Thug Demand."
