Mary J. Bilge

I've given this a full 5-6 listens now, and I'm officially disappointed. It's not "bad" per se, but I don't think it stands up to the other three.

I agree, luckily they aren't relying heavily on it for their setlists this tour.

its a bit poppy for you. Perhaps you need to see the video and join in the hand-clapping on the first track? I keep liking it more and more, after being dissappointed at the start.

which is ironic, sort of, or not.
You need to listen to this (but only in the original package) next for the full synergy.

I'm okay with the first half of the album. After that, it just seems to drop off.

yea, maybe, still the first half is so good, that anything that happened in the second half should be forgiven.

I am a bit worried about the show though. I hate it when bands do overly long versions of every song.

I thought the great thing about their live show was that the songs didn't sound like the album. They'd get in a groove and run with it.

I'm still looking forward to the show.

isnt that what jam bands do?

like this a lot more than I thought I would, may have to be my go to album for a while when I am looking to shut out noise around me at the office
Jam bands, Yo La Tengo, and the Dandy Warhols.

But GGW is a closet hippie anyway…

To a certain extent. Except the underlying music is different than say, Phish or the Allmans.

dandy warhols, welcom to the monkeyhouse. I played some for you before, you danced in your chair.
In preparation for tomorrow night, I think I will be rotating these bands and start with these albums, I guess just this one for the shins.

thats a pretty diverse list of artists… are you saying it appeals to those that like popluar British music from the late 90's?
I would have to agree with that assessment. Clearlake aren't bad but the singer kind of gets on my nerves. One of those take it or leave them kind of bands.

About the new Dandy's album, I like it but have to agree that it isn't their best work, yet still good.

Oh, and Markie, I have the same thoughts on the new Super Furry Animals album but probably like it just a little less than you do. It's just too flat for me.

flat in what way? I was listening to it this morning, and I was thinking the same thing. Something about the production. His voice some how is flat within the music, Rings around the world, the sound was somehow much more bright and the vocal and music much more like two seperate flattering parts, rather than the more dirgey single noise of phantom power.

is that just me?

No, it's not just you. Granted, there's something to be said for consistancy but Phantom Power just doesn't have enough changes of any kind. Really no crescendos or tiny little spaces that accentuate the other sounds. It's just flatter all the way through, from beginning to end.

The production on Rings Around The World is spectacular (which, some hold against it, with claims of over-produced, etc.) but PP seems like plain old crank 'em out production. Guess they didn't rake in the money from RATW that the record company expected so cut their budget. Too bad.
