V Fest

From our boy, J. Free….

Police state: Free are the Police coming here this summer? No DC date on their website. Do I have to pay a fortune to go to NY/NJ to see them?

J. Freedom du Lac: OK, OK – I finally have something for you here. This has been long rumored and appears to be Happening For Real Now. Haven't gotten hard confirmation, but I'm reading the tea leaves, and they're telling me this is pretty much a done deal.

The Police will headline this year's Virgin Festival on Saturday, Aug. 4 at Pimlico in Baltimore. You read it here first.

I'm also hearing that the Virgin Festival will be a two-day affair this time around.

Second day will be Sunday, Aug. 5, and the rumored headliner that day is another reunion band: The Smashing Pumpkins.

No, I don't have any idea when tickets are likely to go on sale, or who else is playing, or any of that.

I just know that if you're hoping to see the Police around here, that you shouldn't book a vacation the first weekend in August.

why dont they just move every fucking summer festival to that weekend so i can fucking miss them all.

i hope it pours down rain like bull run at a radiohead concert!!!!!
ugh, so now i have to chose between lolla and vfest?!?

last year's late september weekend was a great choice… no other festies to compete with and folks weren't on vacation anymore, weather was comfy, the Big Concert Of The Month for the east coast, etc… can't say i'm a fan of the new august date, but wotcha gunna do.
MMMM…August in Baltimore…perfect weather for an out door concert with no shade!

Ha, I felt the same thing that year when I knew work would prevent me from seeing them. I was glad for the rain because I knew if I couldn't see them, no one in DC could! Cruel, hell yeah.

the jews!!!! blame the jews for this one!!!!
Moving the date to August seems like a bad move to me. Why compete with Lolla and the heat?
Is there really that much competition with LollaPalooza? One is in Chicago, the other is in Baltimore. Aren't both cities able to fill a baseball park on the same night on any given Saturday (well the O's would if they had a good team)? It would seem that both cities would be able to have concurrent music festivals as well.

yeah, i dont think competition is the problem, although it could pose some issues with bands playing in chicago and not baltimre.

but it may be quite hot in August in Baltimore.

i dont like an early august date either. since i decided last year that Lolla and Virgin would be my 2 festivals each year…..

I would think the biggest issues would be the artists. It would surprise me if the Pumpkins weren't a part of Lollapalooza this year, but they are big enough to play one city one night, and fly to the other the next. August sounds like a move done solely to get the Police involved, if this is even to be the case. Freedom isn't exactly a reliable source IMHO.

The good thing is it won't compete with DAM! Festival 2007!
August 4th. Police @ Pimlico according to Cerphe on 94.7FM The Globe.
So with the police playing, I guess we are looking at $100+ tickets
Beastie Boys have been added to the lineup:

Press Release
i liked this concert better the first time i saw it at charlestown raceway in west virginia in 1994.
While I'm still Chicago bound, I'm glad to see this line-up come to the area and the expansion to 2 days it bodes well for the future. I hope in doesnt' coincide with Lolla every year, as there will be no contest in my mind as the urban setting, ample opportunities to come and go from the fest to get decent meals, multiple after-show shows, and late night partying will trump even a better line-up in Baltimore any day. But again it's a good sign and I'd support if there wasn't a conflict with Lolla.

If they could just add L7 to this Pimlico lineup I will be the first one in line for tickets. I won't care how much the "fee due to the addition of the reunited Police" comes out to be.
Actually, I looked at Police tickets when they went on sale and the cheapest were 70 bucks from what I remember. I'm usually willing to bust out cash for a good show, but 70 bucks for crappy seats?? If I end up paying over 100 bucks for this, I won't care. Unless of course the rest of the lineup is atrocious. I wasn't wild about last years lineup but still had a good time. I'm glad they are doing it again.
Smashing Pumpkins "First US Performance in 7 years" Well that would mean they're not playing on the first night of Lolla which is not what I've heard. Could be hyperbole, or perhaps Sir Richard doesn't know IL is in the US, or my source sucks.

me too! but from that billboard article, heres a quote from Seth

"It's not ideal [to be the same weekend as Lollapalooza], but given the choice of booking the Police or not we had to go for it," Hurwitz says. "If anything it's probably helped us because we were able to book some bands that were out already for Lolla. Hopefully both festivals will be strong enough that it doesn't matter."
Did the price of tickets for Bonarro go up due the Police being on the bill?
I like this quote better -

Hurwitz says the rest of the Virgin Fest lineup will be announced "when it's finished."
