I wore a mask when walking the dog. He went without one. Just like the good old days.
I seem to recall hiking in smoke worse than this when were in Banff a few years ago, and in Yellowstone a few years before that.

on the west coast, we count on having an annual wildfire season, AKA air filled with smoke, checking the hourly PM2.5 forecast, fire up the air filters, etc. we got a break last year, but we're like 5-for-6 since i got here. it sucks. old-time PNW'ers tell me it's a new phenomena… hopefully it's not going to become part of your reality.
