Well since they have only reached the conference finals twice im their entire history what is the point of your post?   Last time they made it Oates was the guy leading the team as a player.  And if you are paying a guy like Ovechkin for the next ten years or so you probably want a coach who actually uses him.

Not speaking from a position of great knowledge of the team having been out of the loop for years, but your comment doesn't make sense to me. It's not the coaches job to select a team based on how much each player cost. Or at least it shouldn't be.

I'm disapointed they didn't give Hunter a full season to mold 'his' team.

It was definitely Hunter who didn't want another season. George has come out and said he wanted to keep Hunter around. I'm also bummed he didn't stay though. I don't think he would have made use of the offense though.

Of course a coach has to choose a style of play that uses the players that he has available the best.  Backstrom and Ovechkin  have huge contracts and are going to be with the team longer than any coach. Hunter was forcing a style of play that was fitting for him as a player not good for the players that he had.

Look at the maryland football team this year.  They had offensive players that were best suited for a passing game.  Yet the coach forced a running game down their throat.  How did the players react.  What was their record.

Backstrom and Ovechkin are going to be on the team.  What do you think the reaction would be next year when Ovechkin and Backstrom start to revolt against the coach?  Anyway Hunter is gone and his record was worst than Bodreau's this past season with the Caps.  Last year the Caps swept the rangers. this year  they lost to the rangers.  And in the series it appeared to me that the strategy was to lose by one goal.

Anyway his style of hockey was unwatchable.  Eventually fans will stop coming if he stayed as the coach.

Actually, I would rather have red hot pokers jammed into my eye sockets…..
They didn't sweep the Rangers, they won 4-1. Regardless, we've had the Rangers number the past couple of seasons in the playoffs, I had high hopes going into that series. Even if they were the number 1 seed I was hoping the new defensive attitude we had, paired with our past experience, that we would beat the Rangers. Game 7 was insanely disappointing.

McPhee was on DC101 this morning and he was talking about more uptempo hockey, he said he didn't like the system that Hunter brought in. I agree. Then Oates was on 106.7 after that and it was nice to hear his perspective on coming in. Really excited for the season opener! only 108 more days?
Looks like the lock out is over.

Don't get sucked back in for the next 6-7 years so they can go on lockout again.

This agreement did nothing to fix the inherent problems of the NHL.  It simply moved money around between the owners and players.  There will be another lockout before 2020.

well from what i read the deal is for 10 years with an opt out after 8 years.  That means that there won't be another lockout before 2020.

I am excited to see how oates has the team playing.  Hopefully he can get the team going in the right direction.

Also very excited/curious to see how Oatsie has the team play. He's supposedly very offensive minded, so hopefully he can find that balance between the power house offense and that shut down defense that the Caps have managed to show over the past 3 years.
Great news…Backstrom skating today and will be 100% for the opener.  The NHL has me bitter.  But fuck it.  Love me some hockey.  Getting ready to tune in.
GO RAVENS!!!!!!!
106.7 The Fan was at Kettler this morning. Was good to hear Eric Fehr and Brooksy doing interviews. So excited! 8 games in 13 days. OH GOD! SO MUCH HOCKEY CRAMMED DOWN OUR THROATS!
It is nice when you have an optional practice after a second loss to start the season the captain and all assistant captains do not show up.

I believe they are ALTERNATE captains not ASSISTANT captains.

Anyone a little worried about the team shitting the bed? Defense playing like absolute DOG SHIT. I turned the fucking game on less than a minute in and THEY WERE ALREADY ON THE PK. Was I crazy or after the first 2 or 3 commercial breaks they were always on the PK? Who's the leader on this team?

I liked how the team responded to Matt Hendricks 3 fucking fights in the last 2 games… They seemed totally indifferent. Awesome.

Team seems pretty untalented.  It might be time to unload Ovechkin if you can get a decent return.  I watched the first game they played pretty poorly and the announcers were saying it was the first game.  But Backstrom and Ovechkin were playing together in the KHL they should be in pretty decent shape and be able to work together well.  When is Laich coming back.  He should be the captain.
Lol, Ovi has 8 years left on his contract, they're never going to unload him.

Dunno when Brooksy is coming back, hopefully he can light a fire.
