This record is really growing on me - it languished in the stack for a few months & now it's in heavy rotation, ending the year in my best of.

Allmusic describes them as â??sounding a little bit like a tougher, more soulful Spoon.â? Some songs maybe.

these guys popped up in a few end of year lists - what caught my eye were comparisons to Afghan Whigs - what would you say?

I think the Whigs comparison may have been what caused me to initially pick it up, but I don't really hear it. I'm not sure if I've ever heard another band that I thought sounded much like the Whigs. If anything, there are Constantines songs that sound like what you'd imagine Springsteen would have sounded like if he had chosen a punk rock profession.
I dunno, the way they pranced through the crowd and onto the stage at the Bowery Ballroom they reminded me of a fratboy/prettyboy combination. Ugh, didn't like those dudes live at all. Not enough melody going on either.

Well, I haven't seen them live, so I can't argue that point, but I initially felt the same way about melody though. It just took a few listens to sink in. Now I'm hooked.

Spottiswoode and His Enemies
Building a Road
I'm test driving my just mastered Drive-by Truckers collection that I put together for sonickteam2. I didn't want him having to pilfer from the internet ;)

It's quite a tasty collection of classic DBT anthems, featuring:

1 Lookout Mountain
2 Sink Hole
3 Ronnie & Neil
4 Hell No, I Ainâ??t Happy
5 Too Much Sexâ?¦
6 Shut Up & Get on the Plane
7 Careless
8 Women Without Whiskey
9 Marry Me
10 Somethingâ??s Got To Give
11 Let There Be Rock
12 Do It Yourself
13 When the Pin Hits the Shell
14 Zip City

Anybody else want a copy?

I picked them as my band starting with S (except I didn't post it because I didn't finish my list) but I much prefer Floodland to Vision Thing. VT seemed washed out..

I have only ever listened to them when Markie played them, and it was often enough that the title track got stuck in my head, so I picked it up when I saw it cheap at cd exchange. I like it more than I thought I would.

then you might like Floodland even more; it's a much more moody and dark album which, for me, conveys the sparseness and isolation of a cold wintery landscape - great winter listen.
