New Order - Power, Corruption and Lies
yeah yeah yeah….for me, this is the New Order album you *must* have. Ah, memories of the Blue Room this past Sunday….
thanks to Kosmo

Burning Brides - Leave No Ashes

an improvement over the first album, very good, closer to the energy of the live show, which I can't wait to see again
I heard a track over Memorial Day weekend on CPR Radio (Mt. Pleasant pirate station) and was very pleased. It was one with Kim singing on it. Does she have many songs on the new one? I need to go out and buy this pronto.

Jim White
Drill a Hole in the Substrate & Tell Me What You See

I like it a lot after 2 listens. As with most Jim White records - some songs are fun, some are beautiful, & some are just very weird. Joe Henry's production (think Fuse) is a perfect compliment on many songs.

Getting mostly good reviews:

Shawn Smith
Shield of Thorns

The latest from Shawn Smith (Satchel, Brad, Pigeonhed & frequent Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers collaborator).

Very hard to find - no mention at all on Amazon or on Allmusic. Found it on a UK site, which links to The Establishment Store , which appears to be a SS merchandise site.

Here's a review that I found & agree with:

Shawn Smith is a humble man in possession of an impossibly poignant voice and a special songwriting gift. Over the past decade heâ??s quietly flourished in a post-grunge Seattle as a singer, guitarist, and pianist for three bands â?? Satchel, Pigeonhed, and the confusing supergroup Brad (guitarist Stone Gossard, bassist Jeremy Toback, and drummer Regan Hagar). An anonymous figure lost in the shuffle of false idols, Smith hasnâ??t helped himself by routinely changing bands or releasing solo albums on defunct labels.

Shield of Thorns is Smithâ??s third solo offering that unveils some wonderful recording sessions with the multi-talented Harold â??Happyâ? Chichester, guitarist Thaddeus Turner, and drummer Michael Shrieve. The results are a kind of contemporary AM gold â?? rock songs crafted with soul, passion, and astonishing benevolence.

Hauntingly beautiful …â??If Roses Take My Placeâ? is an emotional piano stunner, …â??Golden Ageâ? kicks up some roadhouse dust, â??Leaving Californiaâ? is sing-along fare for road trips and summer campfires, and title track â??Shield of Thornsâ? is a vibrant little rock groover. The cathartic closer â??Sing That Song For Beautyâ? radiates an inspirational glow that fully achieves the mythic Prince â??Purple Rainâ? moment.

Five months into 2004 this thirty-minute masterpiece receives my early nod for album of the year consideration, but donâ??t bother looking for it at Try-n-Save or your friendly neighborhood record store. Along with Smithâ??s stellar, but long deleted back catalog, Shield of Thorns is only available exclusively through the Establishment Store website. Letâ??s hope that this store stays open for a very, very long time.
they've finally made the geezer rock album they've been threatening to make for a few years now yet I still find it strangely compelling….
