Flying Toasters predates any sort of mass non-professional use of the Internet by a bit. My dad was a researcher and we were early adopters on computer stuff — paid $4500 for a 286 when I was like 5 and a slow ass modem ran us several hundred years later when they first hit the commercial market.

I had flying toasters on a 5.25” basically when I was like 7. A modem was years later. Ergo, after dark/flying toasters is pre-internet in my personal estimation.

first appears in 89 for mac as a paid for screen saver software
windows version isn't until 92 ($30!)
AOL starts around 91, can't say I got on the WWW (other than at college) at home, until 93-94
I know I never paid for it, most likely got it via sneaker net
But people were doing BBS stuff in the late 80s for sure and software piracy was street cred on the cul-de-sac

but you're right it's more of an early windows PC thing, rather than an early internet thing…but they were at the same time
