Recommend some good movies!

That’s insane.

I enjoyed watching it with my kids….

Secret of the Sacred Fig is so so so good. Might have jump leapfrogged to #1 on my Best of 2024 list but don’t want to be a victim of recency bias. But wow.
You should really go see Becoming Zeppelin, in imax if possible.

I’m not gonna say this again.

movie is being pulled tomorrow (Wednesday 2/12), so you have today and tomorrow to catch it in theaters.

i completely slept on it this weekend, and now i'm kicking myself.  remaining show times are limited, might have to drive into the city to catch a late showing tonight.  dang.
It was great. It traced the origins of the band, including all the studio / side projects and previous bands each member was in. I honestly didn't realize how many non-Zeppelin zeitgeist songs Page has played on. The movie looked a bit at their influences, then traced their path through recording and touring their first 2 albums. I'm in for the sequel if they ever make it.

TBH I didn't know much about their origin story, so it filled in plenty of gaps for me. There's some interesting audio interview clips w John Bonham that really completed the story. The video editing was overall good, and while they employed some pretty transparent "tricks of the trade", it was overall really effective.

The imax audio was stellar.
IMAX options are slim, so going to just have to catch this zep movie in standard
but I'm very interested in getting the led out
Aww damn they let Tim Robinson make a movie

can confirm.

snuck out on the family and caught it in imax tonight.  this zep-head loved it.  despite being very familiar with the band's history, i learned plenty.  what i enjoyed the most was hearing the band's account of their rise to success.  they used some really slick editing to ensure that today's attention-deficit-afflicted watcher isn't incombered with a 12-minute "moby dick" drum solo.

only complaint: as a member of the "i picked up the guitar because of jimmy page" club, i had issues with the sync'ing of the audio and the video.  too many instances of the audio being a searing lead, clearly in the upper frets; while the video showed page playing cowboy chords (aka at the top of the neck).  or vice-versa.  happened with the drums too, but not surprisingly they always got robert & the vocals aligned with the video.  hey production team: invite a guitar player into the editing suite next time.  will work for beer.

same.  i'm more of a mid-period zeppelin guy, so if the next in the series covers anything between III and Presence, i'll be a happy camper.

hearing zep in that theater vividly reminded me that i lack a proper stereo system at home and need to remedy that ASAP.
Going tonight.  Just read Richard Cole's (touring manager) book Stairway To Heaven: Led Zeppelin Uncensored.  Really made himself and Bonham look like complete druggy-alcoholic assholes, with Jimmy Page not far behind.  Not sure how reliable the book is but it does show their meteoric rise to the top.

bonham was a raging alcoholic, he admitted to doing drugs (mostly cocaine) because it allowed him to drink more.  he absolutely hated touring and just wanted to go home to his wife and kids.  nowadays someone in his shoes will cancel the rest of a tour for mental health reasons… back then you downed another bottle of whiskey and trashed hotel rooms.  so i guess we've progressed as a civilization…?

be forewarned that the movie generally glosses over details of the band's excesses.  only passing mention of rock star shenanigans such as groupies, arrests or drugs… page was a complete heroine junkie at the time of In Through The Out Door, hence most of the album was written by jones and plant, but the movie papers this over with a single line to the effect of "since page was dealing with a substance abuse issue, robert and john paul had creative freedom in the studio and proceeded to work on…" - that's it.  no details of how a skeletal page couldn't complete a show without sitting down on stage, or how they kept studio staff on hand 24/7 because they never knew when bonham would sober up long enough to play something coherent, etc.  hopefully the book filled you in on all that gore :)
It was definitely a fan pic and not a smear piece, but the movie only covers the first two albums and tours. In Through The Out Door was their 8th album, released 10 years after.
