Will this deal open the floodgates and end the collusion talk?

The top four remaining free agents are now J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer, Jake Arrieta and Mike Moustakas – all of whom are clients of Scott Boras.

Is this about collusion or are people finally tired of Boras?

Next year is going to be AWESOME.
"Let's put it this way - it's always on our mind." - Angels owner Arte Moreno on extending Mike Trout who's signed through 2020.

Maybe I should have put this in the Nats or O's thread.

6-man rotation?  Pujols shares DH and plays in the field again?  Either way I'm stoked.

Wanna blow your mind?  This guy broke down three scenarios for the Angels to deal with Ohtani.  If nothing else read the Flex Schedule Scenario.

I have three possibilities: stick to the traditional 5-man rotation and force Ohtani to deal with it…Install a straight 6-man rotation and force the rest of the LAA staff to deal with it…or install a flex system that changes the number of days rest between starts.

Part One: Flex System
Part Two: Straight 6-Man Rotation
Part Three: 5 Man Rotation
I'd be shocked if he lasts the entire year as both a starting pitcher and hitter….. my prediction is that they eventually choose one or the other depending on how he's doing….. I could easily be wrong, but in any case, it's gonna be pretty interesting to watch…..

Dammit. I saw the CJ Cron to Tampa deal and hoped it was for Odorizzi.

Instead, the Twins got Odorizzi and the Angels got a PTBNL.

The Rays had a plan.  What were the Angels clearing salary for?

UPDATE: and the Twins move Pineda to 60 day DL.  Desperation move…

You're more optimistic then I am. He blows his elbow out by Aug 1.  Doesn't pitch or bat after that until the 2020 season, and they make the ALCS, maybe even the World Series and lose the series and Trout in free agency to Yankees or Phillies instead of trading him after this season, costing  the team 3-4 prospects.

But I'm a lifelong Halo's fan and have seen it all, so know what to expect.
Hosmer to the Padres. 8 years, $144m with an opt out after 5 years that has zero chance of being exercised.
New pace of play rules
Not enough
JD Martinez to the Red Sox, 5 years, $110m, opt out after 2 seasons.

Thats a pretty good deal, actually.

Agreed, though it's very front loaded.  $50m for the first two seasons, which just about forces the opt out and allows him to go for more, freeing up the Red Sox to make a run at Trout.
I'm hearing Carlos Gomez to the Rays for $4m.  That's absurdly low, even with his bad attitude.  How the O's let that slip by is beyond me.
Bryce is such an ass
The Cardinals extended the contract of Paul DeJong, last year's ROY runner-up for 6 years, plus two team options.  It's the longest/most expensive extension ever for a player with less than one year of service time (108 games, 443 plate appearances).

Normally I would say this is premature, but look at the track record of players the Cards have extended before their free agency period:  Molina, Wainwright, Shumaker, Garcia, Motte, Craig, Carpenter, Walden, Lynn, Jay, Wong, Piscotty and now DeJong.  After a solid streak, they hit a bit of a slowdown, but dealt Craig before he imploded (or perhaps caused his implosion), I could have told them Walden was a mistake, and it's too early to tell on Wong, but just about everything worked out (recognizing that Piscotty wanted to move home to be closer to his sick mother).

I would love to know how that franchise assesses talent.  One other thing to point out - none of them were represented by Scott Boras.
Moustakas back to the Royals, one year $5.5m (!) Plus a $1m bonus. Mutual $15m option for next year.

Just a reminder, he turned down a qualifying offer of over $17m from the Royals for this season.
Phillies spent big this offseason (by their standards anyway) by adding Arrieta with a 3-year $75m deal.

Arrieta, 3yrs, $75m
Carlos Santana, 3 yrs, $60m
Tommy Hunter, 2 yrs $18
Pat Neshek, 2 yrs, $16.25m

What's interesting about that?

Not a single contract goes beyond 2020, also known hometown hero Mike Trout's free agent year.

Realized my MLB.tv was on auto-renew. Guess I have to watch the 2018 Tigers now. Christ.
Astros reach contract extension with Jose Altuve, 5 years $151m.
