WTF was "Celebration"? By the time we got in we were only able to catch the last 2 or 3 songs. Maybe that was a blessing in disguise.

Hippie drum circle + screaming chick + Hammond organ someone found at a garage sale.

Ugh.
During the last song they brought their friends up on stage, it was like we were forced to watch a high school drama club reunion. I would've prefered to listen to the barber shop quartet for those 30 mins. Actually dead silence would've been better.
what in the hell are you talking about?

wow, i didn't realize that, i absolutely love The Lassie Foundation … are they completely done now then?
yeah they put out a 2 disc discography thing last year…killer
I'd give the show a 7.5. It was really great for the most part, but 'blue skies bring tears' really slowed the energy down imo. That version of Heavy Metal Machine was pretty bad too… But they played AEROPLANE and HUMMER… Shit yeah, amazing stuff. Fuck You destroyed as well.
BIG BIG BIG Thank you to the club for making this run smoothly and getting everyone in before the show actually started. Had to wait maybe 15 minutes to get to the will call spot and that was starting out all the way around the block. The bartenders were working their asses off but hardly had to wait in line for a beverage. There was some problems here and there with people not getting enough fluids in their system as they just collapsed to the ground. Staph was immediate on the response both times I saw it happen.

I was a bit surprised at the energy of the crowd from the beginning. Jimmy fucking Chamberlin comes out after the B#s and starts beating on the toms and the crowd let out a half-hearted cheer. :)

Did anyone else catch the guy getting escorted/carried out the doors at the end? Something tells me he wasn't suffering from dehydration…

Was this why the guy was selling the Hendrix shirts in line before the show?

I was standing next to this girl in the front who had been to SEVEN of the nine Asheville shows. She passed out near the beginning of the set. I felt bad that she passed out, but not horrible since she had been to SEVEN of freaking nine Asheville shows.

But yea, staff handled the pass-outers very well, and afterwards starting handing out free water.
I'd probably give the show a C, and I'm too lazy to type anything in-depth today, so here goes:

Pros:
"Starla": For me, that song honestly made the ticket price worthwhile. Absolutely my favorite Pumpkins song ever.

Jimmy Chamberlain: Even on the songs I hated, he sounded fantastic. That guy is a ROCK drummer, and what's worse is that he makes it look easy.

"United States": Before I get criticized for only wanting the hits or the oldies, I'd have to say that this song was pretty massive. It went on a little too long for my taste, but that song was definitely an awesome set opener.

"Hummer": Maybe it's just because that's the era of the band that I love, but that song pretty much killed it as well. Another of my favorites.

"The Aeroplane Flies High": Like Epstein said, that song was just HEAVY.

"Bullet with Butterfly Wings": I actually hate this song on record, but the live version was pretty serious stuff.

The bass player: Hot.

Cons:
"Rocket": My only other hope was for a full-on rock version of this song, so I was pretty bummed that we got an acoustic, mellow version. Not bad, but considering that's one of my favorite riffs of all time, I was disappointed.

Dropping Balloons during the first song: Really? The first song? Seems to be shooting your load too quickly, in my mind.

The band: I know I gave the whole "reunion" thing a lot of shit, but I think it further drove home the point last night that they're just hired hands. The new members are not dynamic on stage at all, and considering one of them is a hottie, I can't believe how little I looked her way. I'm not even sure the spotlights ever hit them. Granted, the dude from the Lassie Foundation got a solo or two, but even Corgan himself couldn't help but mention "the old school Pumpkins."

The rest of the new stuff: Not to be blasphemous or anything, but I was sorely let down with the new songs. I decided to not listen to the new album before the show, hoping that the live versions would rock so hard that I'd be wowed. I wasn't. Everything had the Smashing Pumpkins sound, but nothing the spark that made the first few albums so great. In the end, it just sounded watered down. I think this SAT analogy sums up my thoughts: Pearl Jam is to Nickleback as Gish-era Pumpkins is to Zeitgeist-era Pumpkins. Sad but true.

"Gossamer": That was honest the most excruciating 20 minutes of my life. The song itself wasn't bad, but the self-indulgent noodling was endless and ultimately went nowhere. The only positive of that song for me was Chamberlain's solo…and I HATE drum solos. I noticed the crowd leaving in droves, and I was tempting to join them, but I stood my ground hoping for "Muzzle" or "Bodies" as an encore. Instead, we got…

"Fuck You": Nothing really bad about this song…I was just hoping for something else. And after waiting through "Gossamer" for something more, it was a let down for me.

Set Momentum: Seeing them again made me remember my biggest complaint about the band in the past: their live shows start out stellar and just wind up teetering out in the end. Even "Cherub Rock" wound up feeling rushed and half-assed to me. As much as I hate bands selling their fans short with hour-long sets, I think the 3-hour mark might be a bit too much for the band. I'm sure I'm in the minority, though.

I will give the band credit, though; they made this show a spectacle. First of all, I found the whole political banners, streamers, protests and fucking motorcade were just such absurdly egotistical and over the top productions, it honestly annoyed me a bit. Does this guy need a bigger ego? Still, when looking at the price of a ticket in light of everything they gave (free shirts, pins, posters, flags, elaborate set up, etc.), I'd have to give them props. They definitely made this an event, which is more than a lot of bands of their stature would do.

Despite my grievances above, it still was a fun night out, and well worth the money. I got to see one of my favorite songs played live, one that I never saw back in their heyday. I was able to relive some of the excitement of what made the band so important to me back in the day. And I got to meet a ton of the freshman class of boardies. Everyone was super generous and friendly, especially The Director (dude's like Jordie LaForge with the sunglasses!), bnyced and Miss P. I met Julian in passing, who seemed nice as well, and somehow even though we were 5 feet apart for about 30 minutes, I didn't wind up meeting Darth Ed, although the Star Wars shirt should've given it away. And of course, it's always a pleasure to see sweetcell and Joe, who didn't sexually harass me at all.

I'm not sure if he's reading the board today or tomorrow, but I couldn't have been happier in selling my spare ticket to tinygee. That guy is a fucking champ. Not only did he stay in line so we got in way early (I showed up a bit later due to work and pooch duties), but he pretty much poured beer in me as a thank you, and won't accept anything back. Really a super nice guy. Sorry I lost you toward the middle of the show, but thanks again for the drinks and conversation.

Ok, I guess I did have time for an in-depth post…

Isn't there usually a pitcher of free ice water on the bar? I'ved noticed this the last few times I've been there.

Yup I saw him as the night was over getting carried out. He wasn't one of the dehydrated ones. One was by the mens bathroom/stairway to Backbar. Her knees just kinda gave out and she hit the ground hard. Her friend was trying to pick her up back off the ground and you could tell she wasn't drunk.

Yes there is, but I believe they were talking about at the end of the show as people were leaving.

That was him. I'm waiting for the inevitable "930 club bouncers suck! I was mistreated!" post.
I was trying to remember where I saw Celebration before. They opened for TV on the Radio at the club last year! At the time, I didn't care for them. They played a lot better last night, believe it or not.
I think they also opened for Trail of Dead/Blood Brothers.

Yeah, I was involved in that altercation. The guy next to me was the lanky guy. The guy in front of him was a heavily creatine-induced freak. Well, Testosterone told this guy that the skinny dude was grabbing his GFs ass. So, he went to go strangle him, also did it successfully, while bumping into me and knocking my beer. Bouncers came in, some words were spoken and the carried the lanky kid away, leaving the dude and his (not-so-attractive) girl alone. Quite frankly, I think both parties should have been removed, cause the lanky one was talking to me earlier before it happened. He was a straight up SP fan and well I couldn't seem him go grab some strangers ass. Later on, some guy was passing through and the Testosterone dude grabbed the guys wrist and near-violently pulled him passed, again, protecting the girl of his dreams. He didn't look like he was enjoying the show and it is a shame to think his nuts will probably turn to dust in about three years. All in all though, bouncers do their jobs, and 9:30 folk do it very well. There is little time for judgment and they need to do what they need to do. So, as long as it wasn't me getting my ass pulled out of the place, I squarely did not really care.

We made it back home to Richmond all safe and sound. Only saw one scalper scum couple who got two pair of ticekts meet up with the people they sold the guest tickets to for $250 each on evil-Bey. Scum bastards had the look like they had ZERO desire to be there other than to take someone's $250. I think they got figured out by the appropriate people… :) The show was amazing although I personally didnt get into the acoustic portion all that much. I'm sure most really thought that part kicked ass. All in all a pretty damn good evening, but Im tired now and heading to bed!
What did the scalper scum couple look like? I think I might have been right behind them but can't say for sure.

Yeah, that was certainly him, I had to move to let them through as they were taking him out. He was trolling the line outside before the show desperately looking for a ticket around…8:00PM, I guess. Saw him several times creeping up and down the line, and wasn't surprised to see him escorted out.
