Interesting development over at SoundCloud regarding how they are playing artist over there…

They are shifting from paying per stream to a how fans listen to artists music on SoundCloud

"Payouts are based on a fan’s overall listening time. The fans you see in your insights dashboard are the fans who are contributing to your royalties."

This will be benefit artists at all levels not just the mega ones like the rest of the streaming services.

They have had for awhile a GO+ option that is traditional mainstream releases streaming service like Spotify in addition to all the amateur content… I didn't dig deep but they have for example Arlo Park, Celeste, BlackPink, Ceelo Green, Belle & Sebastian, etc..

I had to look it up as I was curious as to what Damon of Damon & Naomi and Galaxie 500 had to say, as he is also one of the top critics of how streaming services pays out and he's in favor of this move

Lowery has a lot more to lose than Damon

The thing is a lot of bands no one would ever buy any of the catalogs, but it comes up in algorithms and searches in the streaming sites
so I don't think 1 million people would pay $1 for Take the Skinheads Bowling, but they would sure stream it in a second

and now i'm beginning to see a little discussion of artists going the route of using Non-Fungible Token (NFT) to sell their wares… Richie Hawtin is testing the waters and Kings of Leon are going to use them as part of their next album release…  seems like a great idea but it  also seems like you'd have to be a really huge fan of the artist to get involved in that scheme

it's great technology is allowing artists to take back their creations, but bandcamp will suit my needs just fine…

I can tell you this, they will definitely lose the hutch market if this is the route

RS isn't letting me read this one on my 'puter without signing in, but was able to skim on the phone..

as one person points out this feel a bit like a grift… because sell an expensive token for future concerts seems a risky buy, because the band could just break up after selling them… plus, it seems very Julian's American, where the well heeled can get access via their bankroll

i guess for a artist\band just starting out this could be seen as speculative kickstarter type approach, for the established bands they can sell access and for a catalog artist it could provide access to unreleased stuff…
